Analysis and Predictions for 2013/14 Champions League

The Champions League is a long tournament beginning with the group stage. We will cover here the analysis of each group, who is in the group, and offer predictions for which two teams will advance.

In the 2013 Final, two German teams faced each other for the title of Champions of Europe. In the end, Bayern Munich won, claiming the top prize.

Many of the groups this year are fairly well balanced, with a mix of well known teams and lesser known teams in each.

The Champions League provides an exciting opportunity to see clashes between the top teams in each of Europe's leagues, and below we will cover each group, with the teams, analysis, and predictions for advancement to the Round of 16.

----------

Below you can see each group from the Champions League with the Standings, Results as they happen, Analysis of the group, and Predictions for who will advance to the Round of 16.

Group An analysis and Predictions

Analysis: Group A consists of one major club; Manchester United. United should be reasonably pleased with this group, although qualification will be no guarantee.

Real Sociedad represents Spain in this group, and will compete with Shakhtar from the Ukraine, and Bayer Leverkusen from Germany for the second place in the group. These three teams are each very good, and will give United a run for their money if United isn't careful.

Leverkusen and Shakhtar are the two most likely to get the second qualifying spot, but it will be a tight competition that hinges on home victories, and away draws.

Predictions: Manchester United and Leverkusen will advance out of Group A.

Group B Results and Standings

Team:
Win - Draw - Loss
Points:
Real Madrid CF
5-1-0
61
Galatasaray AS
2-1-3
7
Juventus
1-3-2
6
FC København
1-1-4

Group B Analysis and Predictions

Analysis: Group B will prove to be an entertaining group to watch, with three well known clubs competing. Juventus and Real Madrid will be the favorites, but Galatasaray, from Turkey, is a team with a fair amount of talent and desire (and a daunting home stadium).

If things follow as expected (which they don't always do) Madrid and Juventus should have no problem advancing from this group.

But FC Kobenhavn will strive to grab points where they can, and seek to keep it close with Juventus and Galatasaray.

Prediction: Real Madrid and Galatasaray advance from the group stage.

Group C Results and Standings

Team:
Win - Draw - Loss
Points:
Paris Saint-Germain FC
4-1-1
13
Olympiacos FC
3-1-2
10
SL Benfica
3-1-2
10
RSC Anderlecht
0-1-5
1

Group C Analysis and Predictions

Analysis: In group C, we have PSG, from France, Benfica out of Portugal, Anderlecht from Belgium, and Olympiacos from Greece.

PSG is the obvious favorite, with the world class players they have picked up in the last few years. They won their group in the 2012 Champions League, and should do the same this season.

As for who will get second, Benfica is the most likely, but the door is certainly open to the others if something happens.

Prediction: PSG and Olympiacos will advance form the group stage.

Group D Results and Standings

Team"
Win - Draw - Loss
Points
FC Bayern München
5-0-1
15
Manchester City FC
5-0-1
15
PFC CSKA Moskva
1-0-5
3
FC Viktoria Plzeň
1-0-5
3

Group D Analysis and Predictions

Analysis: Manchester City will be happier with this group compared to the group they were put in last year (The 'group of death' with Madrid, Dortmund and Ajax). But it will still be very challenging.

Bayern Munich are the champions, and are the favorites to win group D, and even the final..The matches between City and Bayern will be a great test of the two teams, and fun to watch.

With City and Bayern in this group, it seems unlikely the other two teams, CSKA Moskva and Viktoria Pizen will have much chance of advancing.

Prediction: Bayern Munich and Manchester City will advance from this group.

Group E Results and Standings

Team:
Win - Draw - Loss
Points:
Chelsea FC
4-0-2
12
FC Schalke 04
3-1-2
10
FC Basel
2-2-2
8
FC Steaua Bucureşti
0-3-3
3

Group E Analysis and Predictions

Analysis: Chelsea are the big name in this group, but they will be well aware of their previous season's early exit, getting beat out in the group stage by Juventus and Shakhtar.

Chelsea should have no problem advancing from this group, leaving one spot for Basel, Schalke, and Steaua Bucuresti to fight for.

Schalke seem likely to second, but FC Basel will also hope to get the second spot.

Predictions: Chelsea and Schalke will advance from group E

Group F Results and Standings

Team:
Win - Draw - Loss
Points:
Borussia Dortmund
4-0-2
12
Arsenal FC
4-0-2
12
SSC Napoli
4-0-2
12
Olympique de Marseille
0-0-6
0

Group F Analysis and Predictions

Analysis: Group F will likely be one of the more competitive groups, with three teams who will see anything less than advancing from the group as a failure.

Arsenal, Napoli and Dortmund will all expect to move on, but with only two spots available, someone is going home early.

Borussia Dortmund were last season's runners up, and have both the quality and experience to get through this group.

It will come down to a battle between Arsenal and Napoli, with both sides containing some good talent.

But let's not forget Marseille, who would like nothing better than to spoil the day for one of the three other teams, and possibly have the team to do it.

Predictions: Dortmund and Arsenal will advance from Group F.

Group G Results and Standings

Team:
Win - Draw - Loss
Points:
Club Atlético de Madrid
5-1-0
16
FC Zenit
1-3-2
6
FC Porto
1-2-3
5
FK Austria Wien
1-2-3
5

Group G Analysis and Predictions

Analysis: While Group G lacks any 'major' European club, there will certainly be some great action, and a good fight for advancing.

Zenit, based in Russia, will hope to advance from this group with the help of Hulk and others. Porto and Atletico Madrid will also be competing with hopes of reaching the round of 16.

Predictions: Zenit and Atletico Madrid will advance from Group G.

Group H Results and Standings

Team:
Win - Draw - Loss
Points:
FC Barcelona
4-1-1
13
AC Milan
2-3-1
9
AFC Ajax
2-2-2
8
Celtic FC
1-0-5
3

Group H Analysis and Predictions

Analysis: Group H might be the 'group of death' for the 2013/14 Champions League with four well known European clubs.

Barcelona shouldn't have trouble advancing with their star lineup including Messi and Naymar. And AC MIlan will also hope to advance, although missing recent signing Kaka to injury for the first few games.

But Celtic and Ajax could throw a wrench into the other team's plans, as we saw Celtic beat Barcelona last year in the group stage.

Predictions: Barcelona and AC Milan will advance from Group H.

if leverkusen win the first game, manu is out and defensively manu can be exploited by shaktar.

never count out shaktar. Socieded is dangerous, their defense is poor but their offense will test manu deeply

The points between real and juventus is key. Galatasaray can catch Real. a group stage exit would be devastating

PSG and BEnfica are through.

Bayern is through, the points between Manchester City and Moskow is key. Moskow if they play up to their talent can grab points on manchester city

Chelsea and Shalke are through, but it will not be easy, Basel and Bucharest against Chelsea is key for the Kings of London, we met them last season in the EUropa league. Those clubs can offer problems though Chelsea is different defensively under mourinhio.

Dortmund will get through, but Napoli and Marseille aren't weak. they are both doing very good in their domestic leagues. Napoli is atop serie a and marseille is under Monaco only.

the biggest problem is that Napoli and Marseille can expose arsenal's weak defense and the challenge will affect arsenal's league fgorm as arsenal isn't deep enough.

Marseille have kept their entire team and have true quality. Gignac is scoring goals and Payet is working great with valbuena. They are better than people may realize.

Atletico Madrid are second in la liga but the fight is between Zenit and Porto. The russians and portuguese will have a fight.

Barca go through. If Milan can recover from losing Prince Boateng and get Kaka engaged then they are through. if not, Celtic may get through. Ajax is still not balanced enough

A good review, although after today's results, Madrid and Man City look like they will easily make it out of the group stage. A slight stumble by Juventus perhaps? More great games coming up tomorrow! I think Arsenal will have their hands full in group F.

This is a handy hub I enjoyed it. I watched the ManU game and thought they were a bit lucky. If Leverkusen had gone for the throat from the start - and with a bit more quality around the box - they might have forced a draw.

The question is will REal and Man City top the group or second it.

Galatasarry should have scored three more goals if not for great goalkeeping, after Casillas went off. and MAn City were scored on first. Bayern is topping that group and Juventus isn't galatasary, Real will not get through their defense so easily and if Juventus get those opportuntiies that galata palace had they will go in the back of the net.

Ozil is the key for me with arsenal

Chef-du-jour

one thing is for certain defensively, manu can't make it to the final. Rio ferdinand is exploitable and with a better side will become a door

Man Utd need to work on their defensive frailties. They conceded very poor goals and their attacking display got them out of jail. The attacking area looks settled, Moyes should play this side and formation, it suited them well. As for the defense, they need to bring in a world class CB.

Arsenal will survive the group stage. Wenger knows what he does.

Here is a new chant for our new boy (To the tune of the Flintstones)

Özil Mesut Özil

he's a footballer from Germany,

Madrid sold him to us,

Coz they went and bought a chimpanzee

@unen-tsogt that's a bit of a disgraceful chant for Arsenal.

unen-tsogt 3 years ago

@ Internpete sorry for that, if you feel offended by that. It is not my intention to provoke someone.

I wish Tottenham were in the champions league, the form there in would make it easy to at least make it past the group stage.

Chelsea Beast 2 years ago

Chelsea have a good chances at winning Champions league, because of our midfield, but we should get some new defenders!!!
