Decorating the House for Your Party

The first thing your friends will notice when they walk in is the ambiance. If you want them to really enjoy the super bowl party experience then you need to create an atmosphere different from the every day scene they see when they visit you any other time.

Think of a theme. It can be a general theme or a tribute to your favorite team. Get creative! Your imagination is the limit. Consider buying party supplies that match your theme. You can order them online or at your local party store. Thinking outside the box, you don't have to stick to a football theme. Why not have a "Hawaiian Night" themed party? The more eccentric and creative you are the better the party will be. You might even become famous on Facebook!

Party Theme Ideas:

  • Hawaiian Luau
  • Gothic
  • Vampire
  • Zombie
  • Costume and Contest
  • Tailgater Party with the Grill on the Porch

To choose the best theme for you, think of your friends and the things they like and enjoy. You are catering to them so be sure to make sure it is something they will think is cool and not lame. You may want to notify your guests ahead of time so they can be prepared. Or, you may want to hold out and see their expressions when they enter your "zone". You are the artist! Get creative!

Your Guests Want To Eat!

They will show up hungry and some of them may be drinking alcohol. There are a few things that you, as the host, have to keep track of. First, and most important, make sure that all your guests have a Designated Driver!

***Drinking and Driving is Not Cool. Don't Ruin the Party! Designate a Driver!***

Of course you will want to get the basic snacks and appetizers:

  • Chips and Salsa
  • Doritos
  • Hot and Sweet Peppers
  • Juice for the Kids
  • Soda or something non-alcoholic for Designated Drivers and those who don't drink
  • Subs, Hoagies, or Grinders cut into smaller portions
  • Cheese and Cracker Platter
  • Hot Dogs
  • Sausages
  • Hamburgers (don't forget the condiments!)
  • Pasta Salad
  • Potato Salad
  • Stuffed Peppers

Check out the recipes to the right. They are all tested and proven to be delicious. Chances are, your friends have never tried these recipes and they will be impressed with your cooking skills! The more exotic and different the food, the better your party rating will be among your peers!

You might be surprised at the reaction when you introduce your friends to new and delicious foods that they have never tried before. You might even get invited to their New Year's Party next year.

How Do I Keep the Kids Busy?

OK, so everything is all set and the game is ready to begin. There's one thing you forgot! Some kids love to watch the game but many do not. So what do we do for the kids that get bored? There are unlimited ideas if you think about it, but here are some suggestions:

  • Set up a Game Console such as Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, or Sony PS3 in another room.
  • Designate an adult or take turns monitoring and checking on the kids in 10-15 minute intervals
  • Hire a Babysitter
  • Send them to the Navy (Joking!)
  • Have Board Games and Puzzles for them to play with
  • Try to get them involved in the game by patiently explaining the rules of football (this may require both patience and some time before the game)
  • Set up a Karaoke Machine (preferably away from the game!)

Remember that the Safety of your guests is Your responsibility! Don't let them drive drunk and monitor the crowd to make sure no one gets too wasted. If you find one of your friends is a bit too drunk, take their keys and offer them a ride after the game. If worst come to worse, you can always allow them to stay over for the night. If they give you flack, remind them that you want them to stay alive long enough to come to next year's party. If all else fails, call a cab! Always be prepared. Having things like a Fire Extinguisher on hand is a great idea.

So enjoy your party and have fun with your friends. I hope this guide and these tips have given you some inspiration on how to throw an awesome Super Bowl Party! Remember to be responsible and to have fun. This only comes once a year so make the best of it!

Wow.. I haven't seen a video hub before. Are you from NY? These recipies are great, I would LOVE a Zombie party. Sadly, I won't be watching the superbowl this year. I only watch when the Steelers go. So well done!

I think you covered all the bases. Oh this is football, ok you made a touchdown. I know my hubby will be watching at someone elses house. I will probably be hubbing. THANKS FOR SHARING

Hi, J.S. You outdid yourself, again. Yes, you are a party animal! I think I will get out my Hawaiian clothing for the Super Bowl since I cannot resist anything Hawaiian this time of year. Makes me think "warm, sunny and tropical" when the weather here is not cooperating. Thank you so much for including my Hub. I was born to be a "Designated Driver." Also, thank you for doing us home cooks a favor by listing your delicious recipes. I would like to try at least one dish from each category, then pass out on my couch by the end of the game out of pure gluttony. Voted up and everything else.

@mljdgulley354: Thank you for commenting and SHARING! I should probably add to this Hub that Football and Soccer are different sports. Soccer is really called "Football" in every part of the world except for in America. Rugby is another sport. I know it makes no sense but there are millions of fans out there, so no matter what team we stand behind, be sure to cheer them on and SHARE in the excitement! Go team Go!

@Arlene V. Poma: You are the best designated driver promoter I know, and that is why I keep promoting your Designated Driver Hub! I am glad you enjoyed this and I hope you and your husband have a great time! It's nice to hear from you and Happy New Year, Happy Hubbing, and most of all, thank you for Happy Safe Driving! (GO Pats!)

PS Try not to drool on the pillows...

I love love love the new video option and I cant wait for it to be a go for all of us! I enjoyed reading this article. Im not one for football or Superbowl parties BUT if I had to attend one I would want it to be a tailgate theme mixed with a Hawaiian flair - a grill on the porch and pineapple recipes! Excellent Hub JS.

J.S.Matthew profile image

I think it should roll out site-wide fairly soon Ardie, at least in a few months. I am just speculating of course, I don't really know when but there doesn't seem to be any major bugs so I am thinking soon enough. They were inviting more people to test it out: http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/90307 You should check out the thread.

As for me, I do get into the game but I like the food the most lol. I have never been to an actual game yet (which is sad because I live less than an hour from where the Patriots play!) but when I do go, I will be sure to tailgate (responsibly, of course!)

When we can't make the game in person, we could always grill on the porch, coolers and all. After freezing for a while outside, go into the house which is heated and has that tropical, Hawaiian ambiance to it. Best of both worlds! I think it will work!

Thank you for stopping by!

Awesome! The video rocks! Gonna try the sweet potato recipe. BTW - I wonder how poetry readings would do in hubs. Gonna do a hub on videos?

Hello again AnnNoE! I am glad you liked the video! My daughter was the camera woman and my son did the sound! It was my first time ever being in front of a camera like that. I am planning on doing poetry readings (my own for now) on video soon. I want to set up a "studio" and get brave enough! We'll see what happens! Thanks for stopping by!

PS Hope you enjoy the Sweet Potato Recipe!

Very cool-I've never seen a video on a hub before. Nice extra touch with that. I love your ideas on how to throw a great Superbowl Party. My sister and I had a buffet of our favorite appetizers and grazed on it throughout the game. I hit lots of buttons here.

Hello Minnetonka Twin! Yes, videos on HubPages (the way you see it in this article) is in Beta Testing right now and will soon be available to all Hubbers. Follow this link if you would like to read more about the video feature: http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/90307

We usually go to my mom and dad's house every year and we usually bring some of these recipes with us. The biggest hit is the Spring Rolls and Dipping Sauce. We eat tons of chips and everything else too! Sounds like you and your sister had as much fun as we did! I am looking forward to next year's party but I hope the Patriots win! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your comment and for hitting all those buttons!

Hello Minnetonka Twin! Sorry for the delayed response but I have been very busy and any time I have had on HP has gone to preparing for the contest! I actually have 2 shirts! I got on at HubCamp Boston and I also received one after I won a daily pick in the "Clogs to Coins Contest" last year. I am very happy to have earned them and I wear them with pride!

Who does Mom & Pop Harbaugh root for in this years' Super Bowl? One son's going to be real happy, after his team wins and the other one's going to be real sad, after his team losses...talk about a flood of mix feelings...wow!

Hello Victoria Lynn! How are you? I appreciate your comment. Having a fire extinguisher in the kitchen is a must! Most people don't have one though. It's nice to see you! Thanks for stopping by!
