Unique Places To Ski

Skiing and snowboarding are truly sports that light a fire in the heart of adventure enthusiasts. While most ski resorts boast similar attributes, decadent lodges, quaint towns, epic groomers and unforgettable Apres ski parties, some spots give unique a whole new meaning with qualities that are eye popping. Slip into a warm pair of mittens for a frigid compilation of the world's most individual ski areas.

Ski Dubai, UAE

As part of the United Arab Emirates, Dubai has put a gold star on the map for excess and extravagance. What else could a person expect in a country that's home to the world's only seven star hotel. Dubai houses one of the largest indoor slopes on the planet. Go from desert heat to frigid temps in minutes inside the Dubai Emirates Mall. A lift ticket includes equipment, and even winter wear, to be enjoyed on the 5 runs of over 6,000 tons of real snow.

Telluride, USA

Telluride's infamous history is only rivaled by some one of the most breathtaking backdrops in the United States. The village sees little impact from the outside world do to it's elevation and location in the heart of the ultra steep San Juan Mountains. With not so much as a single chain store or restaurant, activities off the slopes are truly one of a kind. Additionally, the area boasts a unique transportation system to get from the city of Telluride into the neighboring Mountain Village, a gondola.

Pucon, Chile

Skiing top mountain ranges like the Alps and the Andes is on nearly every enthusiast's to do list. Pucon offers a world class landscape right in the Andes that oozes fun in more ways than one. With Chile's winter running from April to October, Northern hemisphere powder junkies can get their fix year round. On top of that, the runs are adjacent to the Villarica Volcano, the most active in Chile. The area's eruptive past has left a playground of natural half pipes and tree free runs to tempt frolicsome skiers.

Kitzbuhel, Austria

Kitzbuhel's storybook setting contains remnants of the way the town was some 700 years ago. On top of being a scene right out of a medieval fable, it's home to the daunting Hahnenkamm downhill race, perhaps the most fearsome and challenging on the downhill circuit.

It seems every one of the Earth's corners boasts mountainous terrain that some die hard will deem ski worthy. Whether or not these regions are too challenging or bizarre to undertake all lies in the eye of the beholder.
