The long walks

Walking is exhilarating. As each step you put forward, a muscle in your body moves, twitches and relaxes. While I am no expert walking is good for you, doctors recommended long walks for a lot of ailments a person may have.

I started walking, not the short walks, the one you want to get it over and done with, but the long hard strides where your feet follow with another and arms and hands walking with you in pomp and vigor.

The place is the Sports City Amman where long stretches of space are already laid out together with trails and pathways inside what is called "the forest", well, kind of forest with pine trees that actually stretch up into the open sky.

My wife and sister first persuaded me. You walk at your ease completely engulfed from the roads and traffic that surrounds you.

I only being doing it for a couple of day, but I already feel my limbs are being cajoled into a new, dare I say, health status. I was surprised by the number of people who were moving along the paved road and footpaths.

Young, old, women, men, even children some with their families, some without, some were with friends, others on their own, they were all it. And all this was early in the morning. Cars were parking, people getting out, and started moving.

Some were in a brisk mode, others like me were taking it easy and still others were running. It’s the atmosphere, the fresh air and oxygen filling your lungs with vigor. After a while, my back starts aching, and I'd need to stop and take a breather for five minutes.

The other day, I chanced it, went into a tangent and started walking on the trails among the pine trees. Of course, it wasn't a smooth ride, with ups and downs, and footpaths that zigzagged. I looked around, people from everywhere, the human stream constant.

At a certain stage, I didn't know where the trails were taking me, having gone downhill, walked a straight road, and then started to ascend, it wasn't actually too high, but another, turning, and another, and another, until it brought me back to roughly were I started.

Contrary to what I thought, people are really health conscious, and I thought it was me that lagged behind. Mind you, I did see some here and there inside their cars with the door open, light up a cigarette, inhale and drink coffee!

You simply need to start. This is only the third day but I already feel much better, healthier. I am on a routine which I hope I will continue, and that is to walk continously for an hour non-stop. I do take a rest usually 4 or 5 times, now its down to 2 times. Already as well my back has stopped aching.

You encourage me Marwan. I know I need to begin a walking regiment. I also know I need the "exercise" and should be walking everyday. I will take your hub as a challenge and begin. Keep us updated on your progress and we'll try to keep up with you. Thanks for the "timely" hub......I needed it!

I live amongst the pine trees in the forest and walk each day. Some days I feel like I could walk forever and other days I barely make it at all - but I do it! Thanks for this hub. I will pass it on.

Hi Marwan, a very good hub, yes I agree walking is excellent for health. I tend to take regular walks after I finish my day in the office. It does wonders to relax the mind and keep the body fit. Thank you for sharing this info.

Appreciate comment. We underestimate walking all the time.
