If you ever have the urge to start a fight in a sports bar, just ask that question. You will find as many opinions as there are teams in the NFL and some of the arguments may come with solid statistics and many of the debaters will focus more on individual players or coaches while others spout off numbers from a team’s individual units, both offense and defense. However, the argument can be made that it takes all of those statistics together to arrive at the top 5 greatest NFL teams of all times.

1. Chicago Bears of 1985 trotted out punk quarterback Jim McMahon adding to the swagger that the Bears as a team exhibited that year. With Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan on the sidelines and Walter Payton in the backfield along with Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, Dan Hampton and Mike Singletary the Bears clawed their way through the playoffs before crushing the New England Patriots for a Super Bowl win that year.

Although the Bears’ offense was second in the league with 456 points, the stingy defense only allowed a total of 198, a difference of 258 points, the best in the NFL that year.

2. San Francisco 49ers of 1984 had a couple of the best players in football that year with Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott and Dwight Hicks. Led by Bill Walsh to a win in Super Bowl XIX, the defense only allowed 227 points while the offense racked up a total of 475, both numbers leading the league that year. The 49ers dynasty of the 1980’s had a 15-1 record that year, won all of their games by at least 15 points and bested Dan Marino’s Miami Dolphins to win the Super Bowl.

3. Miami Dolphins of1972 had an undefeated season that year, even though the season then was just 14 games. The offense and defense both led the league that year and 10 of the players were sent to the Pro bowl and to some are considered the most famous team in American sports. As unfortunate as it may be, the Dolphins have been overshadowed following their best season by other teams, and the passing of nearly 40 years, but their reign that year is still remembered by their loyal fans.

4. New England Patriots are arguably one of the best teams that played in 2007 led by Tom Brady with receiver Randy Moss, aided by Wes Welker and Donte Stallworth. The NFL had not yet transformed into a passing offense, but Brady and his band of receivers put up some awesome numbers that year. They could have been the most recent undefeated team in NFL history, but they faltered in the Super Bowl, losing to the New York Giants. Still, Brady accumulated 50 touchdown passes with Moss contributing 23, putting together an offensive season of 315 points, coming in first in the NFL.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers in 1979 dominated the NFL, continuing a trend that ran through that decade winning a record four Super bowls. While their offense was outstanding through the decade, their defense, known as the Steel Curtain, kept their games fairly lopsided and in 1979 they had 14 players go to the Pro Bowl.

Those 85 Bears were a monster team. They're certainly my pick for best of all time.

This is a pretty good list, but I think I would've added the '98 Broncos in there somewhere. They were dominant on both sides of the ball.

Good list, but what about my Raiders of '76? And while I despise the 'Niners, I'd probably put the '89 version over the '84 one because of the Jerry Rice factor. And yeah, those Steeler teams were beasts!

Thanks scottsalot! I'm sure everyone has their own version of the list :)
