   I loved the beginning of the new school year as a kid.  I got a new dress and loved to learn new things...in retrospect it was also good to get away from an abusive family.  Fall became my favorite time of year.  The crisp coolness in the air and turning color of the leaves brought me joy and respite from a long, hot summer.

   I remember the earthy aromas of autumn oak leaves on the ground and of golden rod and sweet grass on our school's playground; and of leaves burning in the alleys' empty oil drums in the afternoons and evenings,
   
   Another good memory is of meeting many new friends in the autumn of a number of years. Autumn camping has been the venue for this, with the aromas of burning wood and the sounds of animals in the background and songs around campfires. I will always remember walking on a long boardwalk by a historic river in the autumn and feeding bread and cracked corn to the waterfowl and squirrels with friends.

   My favorite memory of fall is always football, but in particular going back home to the Notre Dame tailgates.  It's always such a lively, upbeat environment and there's nothing better than cold beer and grilling steaks or eating a bowl of chili at a tailgate mingling with friends and fellow sports fans!  There's just something about the changing of the leaves, and that cool brisk smell in the air.  My favorite season hands down!

   My favorite memory was a mid-November backpacking trip into the Seward Range in the Adirondacks.  The leaves were absent from the trees and there was a slight dusting of snow throughout the forest.  It was my first time into that particular mountain range, which is far different and far less traveled than the rest of the High Peaks.  As I trudged up the herd path, the snow became deeper and the rocks took an icy glaze.  I used my microspikes for much needed traction.  I shared the mountains with nobody else those days and that feeling is magnificent.
