    What's the best advice a parent or coach has given you before a sporting event?

    Was it motivational? How did you feel? And would you have said it if you were in the same positiion?

    'Don't do this for me' was probably the best advice I've ever received from a coach. By saying this it effectively removed most of the pressure I put on my shoulders and the coach became just another face in the crowd. He no longer was the one I was accountable to, I was only accountable to myself. Simple, but quite effective.

    At school during cross country, my PE teacher told me to "sit this one out", probably because I was rubbish at running and always had the worst times. I suppose it made the class look bad with my time on his chart!
