Cub Scout Urban Hike in Chicago
Cub Scouts hike into the urban jungle of Chicago
Our den took our first urban hike into the city of Chicago in September 2009. Public transportation makes this a very affordable hike at less than $10 for both the scout and adult companion.
Round trip from Union Station was about 5 miles. The last part of the ride was a water taxi, which the cub scouts loved. I highly recommend this for dens. Hiking with a large pack would be problematic as there are a lot of streets to cross.
Rules for an Urban Cub Scout hike
Some rules for an Urban Hike
We follow most of the same rules as we do when we are out hiking forest preserves. There are a two additional rules we setup in downtown Chicago. First, we had a parent lead, as there are many ways to go, this seemed to be the safest. And second, this seems obvious but needs to be stated, everyone crosses streets together.
