Will the USA ever have an elite Soccer program?

What is your opinion?  The quality of the US team is definitely higher than in years past and fans are expecting more from our team in the major tournaments.  But I still think we have a big jump to make to become a "powerhouse" or an "elite" team such as Italy, Brazil, England, Germany, etc.  Sure we have flashes of brilliance, but do you think that we will ever get to the point where we are consistently one of the top teams in the world?  If so, when?  If not, why not?

Not likely for it to matter much.

Soccer IS Football to those outside the U.S.

Rugby would be the closest thing to the NFL. Soccer isn't really considered part of the upper-echelon of Pro Sports in America.

It has a very low fan count and revenue stream. I'm not saying it cannot become one, but unlikely.

They were saying that Canada won't have one until hockey becomes secondary in the hearts of most children. Personally, I would love it if soccer was more popular than hockey.
