I heard on the news today that the Fresno State Bulldogs won the NCAA championship for baseball. They were a regional for seed, had to win there conference tournament just to make the NCAAs and were the 89th ranked team by RPI.
The equivalent would be UCSB winning this years Basketball championship. Accept UCSB didn't even qualify. They were a 7th seed in the NIT.
Is this the greatest team upset of all time in college sports to win a championship?
Yes and no. Fresno State was a longshot to be sure but at the beginning of the season they were expected to go a long way. But it's baseball and, like in real life, sometimes things don't get off to a good start. From what I understand, that was the case with Fresno State. Off to a rocky start and then, when the chips were down and it was do it or lose it, they were able to pull the pieces together and get it done.
Either way, it's an impressive story.
