I was only 14 during euro 2008 and England weren't in it so it wasn't that big over here, so the last time it was a big event in England was Euro 2004, but I was only 10. So i don't really remember if the european championships are usually as big as the world cup, as in build up, excitement atmosphere...?

I think it depends on whether or not your team is in it.

The world cup is a lot more exciting IMO, and if your country is in it, it gets a lot of coverage, but the European Championship, not so much because so few teams are represented.

It's not quite as big, but basically if England has any chance of winning there will be hype and inevitably people will start to get excited, including me, despite myself.
