The methods of training used by the girls guide organisation is a process whereby the girls are "educated from within rather than to instruct from without".

Many believe that being a girl guide is to go camping, play games, and take part in fun activities, but this is not the case because the aim of the movement centred on educating the girl physically, mentally and morally.

According to the Girl Guide Promise and Law, each girl must " on her honour, promise to do her best, to do her duty to God and her country, to help other people at all times, and to obey the Guide law".

These promises that must be "officially" recited on joining are based on a core set of values and in making them; she will begin to realise her fullest potential, and what is expected of her as a responsible citizen of her country of residence.

Girl Guide Training Methods

Educational methods used for Scouting and Girl Guiding are based on non-formal formats that are organised outside of the normal educational activities that takes place in schools and colleges.

Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting uses non-formal educational methods. The non-formal educational activities are meant to help:

  • Young girls develop the right attitude about life.
  • Learn life skills and values based on the Guides Promise & Law.
  • Girls learn from their peer group.
  • Learn through practical programs and fun activities that are mainly created for young girls by young people.
  • Young girls learn how to become volunteers if the need arises, as this helps ensure that they know what commitment entails.

A Girls Guide is made to learn progressive self-development by:

  • Learning/Implementing by example
  • Cooperating
  • Appreciating
  • Teamwork
  • Training for responsible leadership

The girls individually determine their own advancement and it’s up to each to chart her own progress, which will apply according to her goals and aspirations within the outline of the training programs provided by each troop.

The beauty of this method of training is that unlike the conventional educational systems where young students must fit into a strictly controlled and almost inflexible structure, with a passive regard for individual needs and differences, the Girls Guide organisation training structure imbibes strong competition, goal setting/meeting, and a greater understanding of the values of good morals in life, such as character, integrity, fairness, consideration, courage, and solidarity.

The Girl Guide training methods is the exact way the organisations leadership trains the young women to achieve all laid down goals of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). It is a well incorporated approach with other key fundamentals and the training method is used effectively with girls of different regions, of all ages, capabilities, culture and backgrounds.

In his book "Girl Guiding," Lord Baden-Powell wrote, "Our method of training is to educate from within rather than to instruct from without; to offer games and activities which, while being attractive to the girl, will seriously educate her morally, mentally and physically.

Successful and Influential Girl Guides Today

A great number of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts have become top politicians, physicians, authors, scientists, businesswomen, and other great influential persons.

Examples of a few current and former Girl Guides/Scouts include: Senator Hillary Clinton, the 67th US Secretary of State, Roberta Bondar, the first Canadian woman astronaut, Marjorie Mowlam MP in the United Kingdom, and Betty Okwir, a leading female politician in Uganda, East Africa, also a Girl Guide.
