Nike SQ SUMO2 5900 Driver Do you need it?!
The Nike SQ Sumo2 5900 driver is probably one of the most awaited golf club releases of all time. Nike have in their expert marketing way taken time to make sure that they have everything in place in order to make sure they are going to sell thousands of these clubs.
I got my first glimpse at the club at a demo day that was perfectly timed to coinside with the launch of the club, just to say that by being well prepared I mean they have square umbrellas, square golf tee's and I even saw a square golf ball or two (though I am not sure what use that would be) My first impression of the club was pretty much "So What!?" They released a square headed driver last year and it was ugly and sounded really bad!
Well I then saw someone using the club and I was then very excited at getting to grips with the Nike SQ SUMO2 5900 driver for myself. What I saw was a very average golfer, who I play a round with at least once a month, hitting the ball straight and long compared to what he would normally with his Big Bertha 460 Driver which has been called the worlds friendliest driver!
I make no bones about the fact that I feel square headed clubs are ugly! However with changes in anything it takes time for inovation and new designs to catch on and make an impression. The Sumo2 5900 is a club that could change peoples impression of square headed clubs.
The phrase forgiving is one that is bantered around when new clubs come onto the market and I am going to say that this club, which is on the boundaries of what is considered a legal club by the R and A and the PGA, is very forgiving.
I took the club for a bucket of balls under the careful eye of the Nike representitive and it was a good job because I would have tried to make off with the club had they not been watching. It is really that good. The strike of the ball is clean, the club head feels very natural, the drag on the oversized club face is very little compared to what it could be and the overall feel of the clubs persona is one of a club that could well dominate the market.
See what Tiger has to say!
Some Technical Jargon
Nike have said that they have pushed the MOI (Moment of Inertia) which is one of the most complicated mathamatical equations that you or I will probably ever come across, apart from the obvious tax forms that even the mathemetitans can't work out. Roughly explained "Moment of inertia is the name given to rotational inertia, the rotational along the mass for linear motion." You really want to know more then please feel free to take a look Here (normally I wouldn't send you to another page to explain something but this one is completely beyond me). Why do they use it to promote clubs? The same reason that car makers use Torque in their facts and figures, to baffle us with science. However it is simply the control of the club head through the swing which allows the . (simple really)
The SQ Sumo 2 5900 has a deeper face and the new shape increases ball speed and accuracy that improves the overall drive experience.
The Powerbow Weighting technology that the 5900 uses means that there is an optomized center of gravity which helps with the accuracy. Powerbow is effectively a weight in the face of the club as well as the back of the club meaning the momentem of the weight is the same in the backswing as the follow through.
The Sumo2 also has an additional weight in the bottom of the club that is in addition to the Powerbow technology. Again to help the center of gravity the Mono Rail Sole. This technology has been added to give the Nike SQ Sumo 2 5900 a large advantage on the course when it helps with again accuracy and distance.
The shaft of the club is from Mitsubishi (although custom shafts are also available from other makers) the Diamana Yellow Broad Shaft comes in three levels of weight and flex for the different levels of player, this also helps with the incresae in distance and accuracy.
Common Questions I have been asked about the club
Did they fix the sound?
I had a good laugh when I was asked this but it was a very valid point and one that killed off a number of sales with the original club. The problem was that the club made a horrible THWACK sound when it struck the ball and this put a lot of golfers off. The traditional ting sound is now much better than it was previously.
Is it legal?
The Royal and Ancient who put together all of the rules on what is legal and what isn't have said that this club meets the criteria of a legal size club. A list of other clubs that meet the criteria can be found at this Conforming Golf Clubs page.
How much further does it hit than normal?
It depends on what type of golfer you are, I have a handicap of 16 at the moment and it added an extra 20 yards to my drive, the golf pro at the demo day I was a member at said it was adding between 10 and 20 yards to his drive. However a 28 handicapper was experiencing an extra 35 yards so it really does depend on what sort of a golfer you are.
And in answer to the original question do you need it?
Well if you are looking to add distance to your game and have trouble controlling the ball to stay in a straight line off the tee then I would say that it would be a great addition to your bag. But there are pro's and con's of course.
- Great Distance
- Hits very straight
- Easy to adapt to your game
- Harder to get movement on the ball for a draw or a fade
- Tiger Woods says he loves it but will not be using it as it hits too straight for his game
- The price is between $279.99 and $499.99
All in all the Nike SQ Sumo2 5900 Driver is a fantastic club that will improve the, as mentioned before, distance and accuracy of anyones game and of course it will make you look the part in the club house as well.
