Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard - Liverpool's talisman

Steven Gerrard Biography

Steven George Gerrard (MBE) was born on 30th May 1980. A product of the Liverpool Youth Academy, he made his debut in 1998 as a young defender and slowly established himself as a first team regular, earning the club captaincy in 2003. He usually plays attacking central midfield, although he has been used as a right midfielder on occasions.

As Liverpool's talisman there have been many times when Gerrard has lifted the team from the jaws of defeat with a late goal, from the Champions League last-gasp winner over Olympiakos (see video below) to the late, late equaliser against West Ham in the FA Cup Final in 2006, which Liverpool went on to win on penalties.

During his time at Liverpool he has won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup, but his highlight was the Champions League victory in 2005 after an amazing comeback to beat AC Milan in the final.

After that game Gerrard began talks with Chelsea about a possible transfer, after feeling unwanted at Liverpool because then chief executive Rick Parry had failed to agree terms on a new contract. Fortunately, there was a last minute change of heart and Gerrard put pen to paper on a new deal at Liverpool, declaring his long term future to the club.

He is a regular member of the England squad, although is often accused of not performing to the same level as he does for his club. Many believe that Gerrard and fellow countryman Frank Lampard cannot play in the centre of midfield together. Several England managers have tried to tackle this by playing Gerrard on the right midfield which often means he has less of the ball, giving the critics even more ammunition.
