You have probably seen the Total Gym on television and wondered if it really works like they say it does and also probably wondered if it would be a good fit for you and your long and short term health and fitness goals.

While the the infomercials often star Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley, whom are both known for having fit bodies and living a healthy lifestyle, over the last few years they have also been showing more average types like you and me.

How Much Room Do I Need?

Your compact home gym folds flat for storage against a wall, in a closet or under a bed. It actually folds down to just a little it larger than an ironing board. Measuring it against my ironing board it is about 1 and one-half inch thicker.

When it's folded up the measurements are 19" Width x 51" Length x 9" Height.

The open dimensions are 19" W x 90" L x 43" H

Our living room is a decent size but we really don't want to have different pieces of fitness equipment in our living room so we have decided that one of our bedrooms would be a better choice. Even in this smaller area space isn't an issue.

Can you do Pilates on the XLS ?

I have to say that I love, love, love Pilates

At 63, I find that I don't seem to have as much fun or get as much of the benefits of aerobics as I use to. Sure it helps to keep fit but after the class is over I don't really feel anything long term.

However, with Pilates I have been able to keep my flexibility as I'm almost as flexible as I was in the 20's. Sure I may not be as quick but flexible yes.

I also love that Pilates has helped my muscles stay toned and strong even though I sit at a desk all day.

Great CrossFit Training

Are you into CrossFit training?

If so then you know that you need to build upper and lower body strength, increase flexibility, increase stamina and endurance and have an all around lean muscle mass so whether you're lifting, box jumping, doing pistols, squatting or just working on the WOD ( the workout of the day), the Total Gym can help you get ready.

I work out at home... and love it! I rent DVDs from the library, make up my own workouts, do videos off you You Tube or Fitness Blender... it's not worth the $$ to me to join a gym when I get a great work out at home!!! There are tons of things you can do at home and use the $$ for something else... Like NEW CLOTHES!!

I prefer doing my workouts at home because I can babysit my kids while working out. I guess for moms, like me, we donât have the time and luxury to go to the gym but this shouldnât stop us from getting in shape. I have been following this program at home and so far its working.

I like working out at the house or running outside - its just a convienence thing.... If I had to drive to the gym (20-30 minutes a way) I would probably skip a lot of workouts.

Not at all, as long as your can provide your body with some type of resistance and progession you will keep making gains at home as you would in the gym

    Great article, i prefer to work at home because i feel more motivated, and well... its also warmer! ha. I can get in the zone to lift heavier weights and not feel like people are staring at me!

      Do celebrity endorsements make a difference as to whether you may or may not purchase a product?

      We have all seen products in the marketplace with a celebrity as a spokesperson. Some times the celebrity promotes the product because they use and like it and other times they use a celebrity voice over and the celebrity may or may not have knowledge of the product.

      So do celebrities influence your purchasing choices?

        Love the videos. Chuck is looking a bit slight compared to his beafy "I'll get you Bruce Lee!" days. Moreover, I'm really impressed you can put the gym away for extra space.

        Admittedly, I have seen the infomercials for this more than once and have been contemplating a purchase for some time now. It helped that I actually trained with Chuck for two years as a kid when he was still living in the San Fernando Valley area of L.A., then he simply got too busy with his acting career. This was before Walker. I really liked the info you have put together here in writing and I may now go ahead and go for it. Thanks.

        I got a total gym in "99" and never looked back. I'm 44 and in better shape than when I was 20. if you commit to this machine and lifestyle you will see results fast and it is fun to use also. I totally recommend it.

        I am looking into one, hence reading this review..but lets please clarify something a pound of fat and a pound of muscle weigh the same 1 pound. but because muscle is leaner and lets say takes up less room than fat as you work out and lose fat but gain muscle you weight may not go down as one would hope. Your body however will show the differences in becoming leaner, as you said clothes will fit better, and you will be stronger.

        Would like to but on our limited income, cannot afford one. I would like to see the Total Gym XLS be priced a little lower so people that are retired and on fixed income but still would like to be fit could afford one. I think it would be nice to have some type of give away program.

        I Googled âwhat percentage of gym memberships go unusedâ as research for this lens. According to page one of Google, anywhere from 60 to 80 percent of gym memberships collect dust. So if this works for people then do them at home.

        My parents had a total gym in the basement and it really helped me to get started. It is easy to use and has a wide range of exercises. - Perfect for beginners.
