Experts suggest that genetics may be to blame for some of us who struggle with dark circles under the eyes, but there are other causes as well. If you have very thin or transparent skin, blood vessels may be more visible and this may make the circles seem darker. If the blood vessels are very close to the skin, it could have the same effect and make the skin seem blue-ish or bruised. Allergies, fluid retention, anemia and lack of sleep are also believed to be causes of dark circles.

Contrary to all the advertisements we see every day, we can treat dark circles at home without costly products or procedures. Let’s explore some of the things we can do daily to help reduce dark circles.

Consume enough vitamin C and antioxidants
Drinking enough water will help keep dark circles from appearing, and the same goes for getting a decent night’s sleep. Wearing sunscreen on the area underneath your eyes may help prevent the skin thinning further due to sun exposure. Vitamin C and antioxidants in your diet help to make the blood vessels stronger, and may lighten dark circles. Blueberries, cranberries, and bilberries are all high in antioxidants. You could take an antioxidant supplement, but it’s best to ask your Doctor first, especially if you’re using prescription medication.
