Acne Products: A Simple Guide To Clear Skin
With so many acne products to choose from, how are you supposed to know which acne product is right for your skin? Many times people go to the store and buy the latest advertised acne skin care products based solely off what they saw on their television that day. Although that’s a great way to learn about new acne treatment products, it’s not always the best way to select the best acne product that is right for your skin type or sensitivity.
Highly advertised companies use celebrities to endorse their best acne products to suck you in and although they have a big name and celebrities in their pocket you need to do your own research and know what the top acne products can do for you before investing your time and money. Nothing is worse than spending money on an acne free product just to find out later that it makes you break out, or worse leaves your skin super dry. In this article, I will tell you about some of the active ingredients in popular acne products, their side effects, and a few things you can do to help clear up your acne if you have oily skin.
Acne Products: Active Ingredients
If you are confused about which acne product is best for you, you’re not alone. One way to cut back on the confusion is knowing what the active ingredients in your acne skin care products can do for you. Here I will share with you the most common ingredients and their side effects.
The most widely effective and used active ingredient is benzoyl peroxide. This ingredient clears up acne, removes old skin cells, and also removes any extra oils from your skin. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun when using products that contain benzoyl peroxide because it is known to cause sensitivity to the sun.
Another widely known and effective ingredient is salicylic acid. This ingredient helps to slow down the shedding of cells in the hair follicle, which keeps your pores from being clogged, breaks down whiteheads and blackheads. Salicylic acid is known to be slightly irritating to the skin, but this will pass in a few weeks as your face builds up a resistance. To conquer the dryness, temporarily add a cream based moisturizer to your daily routine.
For removing surface dirt and oil acetone and alcohol are very popular. These are usually facial astringents. If you have dry skin you may want to steer clear of astringents as they do dry out your skin if used too often.
The last two ingredients, Sulfur and resorcinol, work together to remove old skin cells and excess oil found on the skin. Sulfur works hard to clear up acne, but because of its strong odor is usually paired with resorcinol which has its own acne healing powers and cuts back on the strong odor of the sulfur.
Oil Free Acne Products For Oily Skin
People who have oily skin generally have more acne than people with a drier skin type. Oily skin tends to attract more dirt and oil so it’s easy to see why you are a target for acne. Although surface dirt and oil do not cause acne by themselves, they do lead to clogged pores. Here are a few things you can do to help clear up your acne. Following these basic tips can help you fight against your oily skin and acne.
The number one thing for people with oily skin and acne is use oil free products on your face. Using products that are intended for people with dry skin is a no go. With oily skin your body naturally makes an excess of oil, so adding oily products to your skin will simply make your problem worse. Use only products that say “oil free” or “will not clog pores.” These products were made for your skin and will help you be fierce and flawless.
Another way to combat oily skin and acne is by rinsing your face well while removing oil and dirt. Many cleansers leave behind an invisible residue that can lead to break outs. While washing your face rinse several times to ensure all cleansers have been removed.
Also, if you have oily hair, wash it daily. Washing oily hair daily cuts down on the oil from your hair being transferred to your face and clogging your pores.
Drinking lots of water is an excellent way to rid your body of toxins which in turn gives your body an overall healthy boost. Adding lemon to your water is a natural way to make your body more effective at flushing out toxins. Be sure to drink at least eight to twelve glasses a day to get the full benefits water has to offer.
Another great way to keep your oily skin at bay is by reducing your stress level. Stress causes your body’s stress hormone to kick into action, causing your blood sugar to rise. This in turn makes your body produce more oil. By reducing stress through yoga, deep breathing exercises, or meditation you can reduce your body’s production of oil.
In conclusion, there are many acne skin care products on the market, but if you follow the simple tips in this article and know what each active ingredient can do for your skin, you will have an easier time figuring out what is the best product for your skin. Don’t get sucked into celebrity endorsed products just because there’s a well known person telling you the product is great, check it out for yourself.
