Kebaya

"If I walk, I hope my footsteps won't be erased just like that...
I want many other footsteps will follow mine !" Anne Avantie

What is Kebaya ?

Kebaya is a traditional blouse worn by Indonesian and Malaysian women made from thin material and worn with a sarong, batik, or other traditional knitted garments such as songket with a colorful motif.

According to Wikipedia, Kebaya is believed came from China hundreds of years ago. Then spread to Malacca, Java, Bali, Sumatra, and Sulawesi. After acculturation that took place hundreds of years, the clothes received in the local culture and norms.

Prior to 1600, on the island of Java, kebaya is worn clothes that only the royal family there. During the period of Dutch control of the island, European women began wearing kebaya as formal dress. During this period, kebaya changed from only using simple fabric to silk with colorful embroidery.

Most of Chinese indonesian women are used to wear kebaya in any occasion, like my late great grand mother, she used to wear kebaya and batik sarong for her daily activities.

One of the best Kebaya designer in Indonesia is Mrs. Anne Avantie.

Anne Avantie

Or Sianne Avantie (her real name) is very talented woman but really down to earth one. She has a very humble and religious personality, despite her glamorous designs. Many famous actrees in Indonesia, famous women Indonesian leaders like our First Lady Mrs. Ani Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, until Miss Worlds who visit Indonesia wear her kebaya designs.

Born in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia at May 20. She is the oldest daughter in her family, she has two siblings. A wife and mother of three. She inherits the artistic talent from her mother, Mrs. Arnie Indriati who is a designer and beautician herself. Now Anne's talent go to her daughter, Intan Avantie. The three women become our talented designers.

She began her production house in 1989, just a simple workshop with only two sewing machines in a rented house. Her workshop was named Griya Busana Permatasari or Permatasari Fashion House. Permata is jewel. So, she often used beads on her kebaya designs. That's the beginning of her design's identity. Beads and embroideries.

Through a very long process of hard works and creativity, Anne Avantie is known as one of the best Kebaya designer in Indonesia and also in regional area like Asia. Her designs are unique and gorgeous. Her Kebaya's designs have been a new landmarking in Indonesian fashion world. in her hand, Kebaya is transformed into a haute couture design.

She does not even experience the university degree, she just a high school graduates without sewing skill, but she never gives up to learn and try.

"I was someone who did not have goals, because I realized that there was in me all limited. I never lecture or take any courses and programs about fashion. I grew up in a family environment that is not intact. I have many limitations than my other friends." Anne Avantie

But somehow, she managed to be a success woman in Indonesia Fashion World. She realized that her designs have copied throughout the country, but she didn't care. She said it's a normal thing.

"My designs have been cloning from Sabang to Merauke (Islands in Indonesia), from low class to high class, from market class to boutique class, from ordinary tailor to designer. But I give thanks to the Lord God, that He chooses me, that through my designs, I can inspire and be a blessing channel to many people." Anne Avantie.(anneavantie.com)

And not just in fashion world in Indonesia, Anne is an active woman who writes many religious Catholic books. She has chosen as "Wanita Indonesia Bisa" or "Indonesian Woman Able" by Women Affair Minister, Ms. Meuttia Hatta, in 2008. She also launched a book "Aku, Anugerah & Kebaya" or "Me, Blessing & Kebaya" wrote by Albertine Endah (a fine Indonesian woman writer).

After 20 years of dedication in Indonesian Fashion World, she finally has succeed to build a great Image and has 2 Exclusive boutiques in Jakarta. In Kelapa Gading Mall and Grand Indonesia Mall.

She admires Mother Teresa so much, and she decided to follow her steps. Anne established the "Wisma Kasih Bunda" or "Mother's House of Love" in St. Elizabeth Hospital Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, for a Hydrocephalus child. In that place, Anne take care and give medication to the children who have Hydrocephalus, Atresi Ani (child without anal hole), tumor, Labiopalataschisis, and other hard diseases from all around Indonesia for FREE.

Such an inspirational woman for me.

I visited Indonesia way back in 1974 and observed ladies wearing fine dresses. I was told it was the outcome of the skill and painstaking efforts to produce one piece.

Thank you for giving wonderful information.

Hafeezrm, wow..you've visited my country when I were not even born yet, and you're right, many of our traditional cloths are still hand-made, like the traditional batik and traditional knitted garmen like songket, sometime there is a traditional cloth that need a whole year of production just to make one piece of it.

Please visit Indonesia again someday, thank you for such a nice comment :)
