The Barbie® Collector Label system will give you an insider’s perspective on what each label means and where to find all those dolls you’re dreaming of. Renown Barbie collector, Denise Van Patten is both a writer and a doll making instructor. Denise is the author of The Official Price Guide To Dolls, recently published by Random House Books, and the proprietress of Katherine's Cottage, which offers modern, vintage and antique dolls for sale. As Denise describes the creation of the "tiers"
"How The Tiers Were Selected
The Barbie Collectibles staff explain the new collecting tiers as follows: "because Barbie has such a long and celebrated history with fashion, the names of the tiers have real fashion roots. Initially, the Barbie® Collector team looked at some of the most successful fashion designers currently on the market. We were inspired by their innovative approach to representing their fashion lines. For example, you can go into an upscale boutique and buy an outfit from a famous designer and you can also walk into a major department store and purchase something from the same designer's more mainstream line. In a way, our new label colors are our way of segmenting our collectible dolls and communicating to you where they might be found."

World Wide Hobby
Mattel estimates that there are well over 100,000 avid Barbie collectors. Ninety percent are women, at an average age of 40, purchasing more than twenty Barbie dolls each year. "Forty-five percent of them spend upwards of $1000 a year. Vintage Barbie dolls from the early years are the most valuable at auction, and while the original Barbie was sold for $3.00 in 1959, a mint boxed Barbie from 1959 sold for $3552.50 on eBay in October 2004. On September 26, 2006, a Barbie doll set a world record at auction of £9,000 sterling (US $17,000) at Christie's in London. The doll was a Barbie in Midnight Red from 1965 and was part of a private collection of 4,000 Barbie dolls being sold by two Dutch women, Letje Raebel and her daughter Marina."
"In recent years Mattel has sold a wide range of Barbie dolls aimed specifically at collectors, including porcelain versions, vintage reproductions, and depictions of Barbie as a range of characters from film and television series such as The Munsters and Star Trek . There are also collector's edition dolls depicting Barbie dolls with a range of different ethnic identities." In 2004 Mattel introduced the Color Tier system for its collector's edition Barbie dolls, ranging through pink, silver, gold and platinum depending on how many of the dolls are produced.
Magic of Barbie
The magic of barbie is unique to every little girl and every little girl at heart. For me, I love the fantasy of the wedding barbie, the designer barbie and the platinum barbie. Also, I love the exotic. While it is hard to choose, and I often promote no favorite children philosophy (in conjunction with exercise and balancing the muscles), I must confuse, one barbie outshines all of them for me. She is beautiful, but of course, dressed in silk and gold and pink and of an eastern flair and resides on a continent, many oceans away from me. She is a Gold Label Doll exclusive only to Japan. She is called the Empress of the Golden Blossom Barbie doll. Limited edition to only 4,700 dolls. Moreover, she is completely and very sadly for me (happy for my check book) sold out! The Empress wears "an opulent gown of pink and golden brocade, inspired by a glorious fantasy of exotic Chinese costume. The noble peony motif is elegantly featured in the lush fabrics. A golden headpiece crowns the intricate hairdo, decorated with lovely faux flowers and birds."
When A Doll Captures Your Imagination
You dream a dream, you are transported if only for a moment. That fleeting joy of the unimaginable imagined - only in your own mind. It is a feeling of your very soul being lifted to a higher good. I don't collect barbies except in my mind and here on the virtual wed. Journey with we as we explore the magnificence of the design and variety of Barbie. Fall in love again with romance and fantasy. Dream a dream. We girls can be anything we want to be!

Dream Halloween Elizabeth Taylor Barbie Doll
$94,800 Barbie Doll
Elizabeth Taylor - Celebrity Barbie
A dreamy, violet eyed, Elizabeth Taylor barbie doll was created entitled Dream Halloween. The story goes that dress was from the 1954 Oscar ceremony. The full skirt dress and white mink stole were by Anne Zielinski-Old. Perhaps because of the occasion of the Oscar night theme or simply perhaps it was a barbie that depicted Elizabeth Taylor, one of the world's most beautiful and accomplished actresses, the Dream Halloween barbie doll from 1954 reportedly was sold to Actress Demi Moore for a ground breaking $25,000 in 1998. Not the most expensive Barbie doll but one of the most expensive for a celebrity Barbie Doll.
Most Expensive in the World
OK, now that I have teased you - what was the most expensive Barbie in the world?
"The most expensive Barbie doll in the world was introduced in Mexico City. It is valued at one million Mexican pesos -- around $94,800-- and includes 318 real diamonds in its design."
Introduced in 2008 in Mexico to coincide with a film that featured diamonds.
"The doll was launched on the occasion of the release of the DVD "Barbie and the Diamond Castle" (Universal Pictures)." Read more: http://www.azcentral.com/offbeat/articles/2008/09/05/20080905barbie.html#ixzz0uH5u0RHN
