Beauty At The Beach: How To Look Your Best
Smooth skin and silky hair can coexist with high temperatures and humidity. Try these insider tricks!
96% of women prefer shaving than other hair removal methods. To keep legs silky for days:
Don't Rush It: Skin becomes tauter 30 minutes after you get out of bed. "Circulation increases, making hairs pop," says Diane Wood, master barber for King of Shaves. The more of the hair shaft that is exposed, the closer the shave.
Reach For Creams: Too frothy formulas such as mousse can weigh hair down. Less foamy alternatives help your blade get a closer cut.
Sun-Proof Your Hair
Harmful UV rays can burn your scalp, dry out strands and oxidize hair dye molecules, creating a brassy tone. Try these before and after sun tips to keep your hair shiny and sexy all summer.
Before You Head Outside: Check your styling products for an ingredient called benzophenone-4, a sunscreen that protects hair. Otherwise, buy products that specify "UV shield" on the label.
After You Come In: Sunlight can suck up hair's natural oils, causing dullness and fading. Saturate strands in conditioner and wrap a warm, moist towel around them for 30 minutes. The heat helps the conditioner penetrate. Rinse and air dry.
85% of women have lumps and bumps (cellulite) - fat cells that have squeezed between the bands of tissue, or collagen, that connect muscle to skin. There is no quick fix, but some firming creams can help. "They boost circulation, which flushes out excess fluids, temporarily firming skin," says Howard Murad, M.D., a dermatologist in Los Angeles and a fitness advisory board member. Try this two step process to make a cream even more effective:
1. Scrub Skin: Dead cells block absorption of any cream or gel. Pre-slough your tush, thighs, and tummy with a gritty scrub to help a cellulite cream's tightening ingredients, such as caffeine and ginseng, soak deeper into skin.
2. Give Yourself A Massage: It increases circulation, smoothing out the skin. Apply cream (testers saw tighter, less dimpled skin with the ones shown on the right), then cup your hands firmly around your knees, sliding them up the front of your thighs to your hips, then up the back of your thighs and butt. Do it again, using your knuckles. Repeat this process twice.
