Bra Sizes: How To Find The Perfect Bra Size that Fits

What is the perfect Breast Size?

There is no such thing as the perfect breast size. Different women have different breast sizes and shapes. The average breast size used to be pegged at 34b bra size but has now shifted to 36c bra size according to most lingerie manufacturers who noticed a shift in the buying pattern of bra sizes. But this does not mean that your breast size is not perfect for your body size just because you do not fall into the above category that has been labeled as ''perfect''.

The Perfect Bra Size For You

You will be surprised at how a well fitted bra can flatter your figure. It is very important to choose the right bra size for your breast.

If you are not feeling comfortable in your bra, rising back, dug-in shoulder, spill out from cup or slipping of band - chances are that you are wearing the wrong bra size.

You should measure your bra size as often as possible especially when you want to buy new ones. Even though you have worn the same bra size for years, chances are that your body may have changed since you last had a measurement.

If your bra does not exhibit any of the characteristics below, then it is time to go for a bra fitting.

  • The strap should not dig into your shoulder - as this means that the strap is carrying all the weight. The bra strap needs to be firm but comfortable and should not ride up at the back at all.
  • Your breast should fill the cups without spilling out anywhere, be it the armpit, sides and even worse not at the top even if you are wearing a low cut style bra. If you have an extra bump of breast spilling out, then your bra cup size is too small which will make it impossible for a bra with underwire to lie flat against your chest. If it is not an underwire bra, you should have two seperate breast instead of one big lump of breast trying to find space.
  • If you are wearing a wired bra, the wires at the front should lie flat against your rib cage and not poke out at the front.
  • You should be able to slip a finger or two comfortably around the band.

Getting The Perfect Bra Size Fitting at Home

There are a lot of bra size fitting services available, but if like me you do not like the idea of a total stranger staring at you or touching your body, then you will want to learn how to get a proper measurement of the perfect bra size that fits at home.

Bras are bought by band size and cup size, for example 34B, 36C. It is that simple.

It is important to note that when measuring to get the perfect bra size there are 3 important indices - above band size, under band size and cup size.

Band Size - To get the perfect bra size, it is necessary to measure the under-band and above band size for consistency.

Above Band size - Standing upright, use a the measuring tape around your back to the front, keep it under the arms and bring it up across to the middle of your chest. If you get an odd number, round up to the next even number to get your band size

Under-band size - Standing upright still, measure (in inches) directly under your bust right around your rib cage just after breathing out all air from your lungs - you want this measurement to be as small as possible. Make sure the measuring tape rests flat on the skin and goes horizontally across your back.

The figure you get accounts for the size 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 which are often in even numbers. If you get an odd number measurement - round down to the nearest even number. e.g If i get a measurement of 37 inches, I normally round it down to 36 - so my size will be a 36. (this can vary depending on the style or cut of bra you want to get)

Note: I usually round down when measuring my band size so that it is as snug as possible. I notice that after constantly wearing and washing the band can expand thereby losing its fitting.

Cup Size - With your arms at your side, measure at the fullest part of your bust (it is best just over the nipple) making sure the measuring tape is parallel with the ground and not binding. The cup size measurement is always greater in number than the band size.

When you have done that, subtract the band measurement you got above from the bust measurement. The difference calculates your cup size. For instance, if you measure a 38 inch band size, and a 40 inch cup size, the difference is 2: which indicates a B cup.

Final Note . . .

Not all bra styles are made for everyone, as i said earlier, different women have different breast size and shape. So even though you have your measure, it is still important to test the undergarment before you make a purchase.

Lastly, make sure you change your bra once its getting old and stretched out, aside from helping to flatter your figure with the perfect bra fit, it is also healthy for your breast.
