Categories of Gems and Jewelry

Gems and Jewelry is a vast subject. There are many branches in this industry. One has to know the different categories and sub-categories of Gems and Jewelry industry to know the subject better. No serious efforts are made to classify Gems and Jewelry till date to the best of my knowledge. Hence, this is an attempt to classify Gems and Jewellery industry. Some of these categories are defined here with short descriptions.

Initially, we categorize the industry in two parts.

1 Gemstones and 2 Jewelry (Jewelry is also spelled as Jewellery in the UK and some other countries and as Jewellery in India).

Gemstones: This may be classified as 1 Diamond and 2 Colored Stones.

Diamond: It may be categorized as 1 Solitaires and 2 Small sized Diamonds or Setting Diamonds. You may also classify diamonds according to its cut. Brilliant, flat and beads are main cuttings of the diamond.

Colored Stones may be categorized as:

1. Precious gemstones:

Ruby, Pink-Blue-Yellow-Green-White Sapphires, Emerald, Pearl, Coral, Hessonite, Cat's eye, etc are among the precious stones. Precious stones belong to Navratna family according to Indian gemology. These gemstones were treated as expensive since ancient times. Hence, Navratna belongs to the precious category.

2. Semi-Precious gemstones:

There are hundreds of colored gemstones known as Semi-precious. These are comparatively less expensive. Hence, these stones belong to the Semi-precious category of colored gemstones. Tanzanite, Aquamarine, Garnet, Rhodolite, Citrin, Amethyst, Blue-White-Yellow Topaz, Pink-Green-White Quartz etc are some of the semi-precious stones.

Both precious and semi Precious stones are found in cut, cabochons, beads, drops, carvings, figures etc.

Beads are classified as plain and faceted.

Gemstones are expensive and normally faceted stones are costlier than beads, cabochons etc. Brilliant cut diamonds are more expensive than flat and beads.
