Choosing the Best Home Microdermabrasion Kit
Let's be clear right from the start, if you want the best possible result from your microdermabrasion treatment, you will need to go to a microdermabrasion clinic. The home kits simply cannot match the result of a professional treatment. However, if you are looking for something more convenient and cheaper, a home microdermabrasion kit might be for you.
What Is It?
Microdermabrasion is a gentle treatment designed to refresh your skin and improve the appearance of uneven spots, such as fine lines and acne scars. Simply put, a home microdermabrasion kit will use a cream containing crystals to polish the skin and remove impurities such as dead cells,
dust, and clogged pores. After the treatment a younger, fresher skin will be unveiled. In an effort to further improve the results, some kits combine the treatment with gels, creams and moisturizers.
Cheap and Convenient
A microdermabrasion treatment at a clinic can cost up to $200, and you should be aware that you will need several sessions for the optimal result. A "full" treatemt can, as you see, be quite expensive. Home microdermabrasion kits on the other hand, will set you back maybe $50 dollars, so it is a much cheaper option.
Another positive is the convenience. Home microdermabrasion can easily be integrated into your normal routine and doesn't take more than a few minutes.
Adverse Side Effects and How to Avoid Them
A common adverse side effect of a home microdermabrasion treatment is irritation and an associated rash. These are potentially be caused by chemical ingredients in the cream, gel or moisturizer. Most often, though, they're caused by the way the product is used.
Home microdermabrasion is a less invasive treatment than when performed at a clinic. Therefore you will need several sessions before an effect is apparent. Unfortunately this creates a temptation to speed up the process by having less time between treatments or by simply abrading harder. This over- and misuse of the product, can create the aforementioned skin irritation. Please be patient and you will get the best result, and at the same time minimize negative effects.
How to Choose the Best Kit
The effect of each home microdermabrasion kit varies across persons, because of variables such as skin type, sensitivity etc.. To find the kit that best suits you, you might have to try them out for yourself. Below three recommended kits will be mentioned.
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator, The Anti Aging Power Treatment Kit
"Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator, The Anti Aging Power Treatment Kit" is a relatively cheap microdermabrasion kit. It is very popular and well reviewed, on amazon.com for example, it has been reviewed 122 times, receiving an average score of 4 out of 5 stars.
Neutrogena's microdermabrasion system will make the skin more evenly toned and smooth, but don't expect huge improvement in the appearance of scars and wrinkles, although improvement in those areas have occasionally been reported as well. If you are looking to improve the appearance of scars, one of the slightly more expensive kits is recommended.
However if you want a smoother more evenly toned skin, Neutrogena might be for you. It is seen as a product that does exactly what it promises to do.
An example of an amazon.com review:
"Love the softness and fresh look of my skin...
After using the Skin Rejuvenator for several days, I have to say I love the feel and look of my skin...it feels tight, smooth and appears glowing and healthy. I was amazed at the ease of use of this product. You simply install the batteries (had a little trouble getting the cover off the back) clip on the attachment head, and stick a rejuvenating pad on the attachment. Simple!! I've been using mine in the shower...apply a little water to the pad, and massage my face and neck for several min., concentrating on the areas I feel need it most. It suggests focusing on problems areas for 1-2 min...for me this won't work, as my skin is really sensitive, and the abrasion is too much, so I just focus on those areas for about 20-30 seconds before moving on. The skin abound my mouth was fairly sensitive the first time I used it, but after figuring out what works for me, I can't begin to tell you how awesome this product is!! For the price, there is NO WAY to beat it. I have tried peels, other 'rejuvenators', exfoliants...and this is by far the best product I've run across yet. I'm not sure what the additional pads run, but you bet it's worth it!! Don't miss this inexpensive "trip to the spa!""
Youthful Essence Original Personal Microdermabrasion System by Susan Lucci
The home microdermabrasion system from Youthful Essence is a very well reviewed system. Users report significant improvement in the appearance of large pores, superficial acne scars and fine wrinkles.
Typically the first session will make the skin look fresher and more invigorated. A couple of sessions more and the pores should begin to tighten. After three weeks, the fine lines will be less visible and the skin will appear smoother. Some report that 2 months treatment with Youthful Essence compares to 4 professional sessions at a clinic.
Youthful Essence Original Personal Microdermabrasion System by Susan Lucci comes highly recommended, generally receiving rave reviews.
DermaNew Facial Rejuvenation System
Dermanew's home microdermabrasion kit is one of the more expensive kits on the market, but it is still much cheaper than having the treatment at a professional clinic. It has been described as the closest a home kit gets to the professional treatment.
After the first week the skin should look smoother. An additional week and the pores will generally become unclogged and they will tighten. After two months uneven areas of the skin, such as small scars, should fade.
Dermanew is, as mentioned, often considered to be as close to the professional treatment as a home microdermabrasion kit can be.
Reviews of the product at amazon.com ranges from very enthusiastic:
"I LOVE THIS SYSTEM. In Fact, I loved it so much that I just purchased two more for my niece and my best friend. I use it every day, sometimes twice a day! It's addicting!"
To one reviewer being very negative. This reviewer however mentions having tried the product just a couple of times. As mentioned, to see significant change, you need to use the home microdermabrasion kit several times. Offering a review after only having used it a couple of times can not be taken too seriously.
