Cosmedix Beauty Products: What is Chirally Correct Skin Care, and Why Can I Not Live Without It?
All my life I have resisted spending money on skin care products, always being skeptical that the higher priced options for moisturizers, wrinkle and eye creams really performed any better than the generic drug-store and lower-end brands I had always used. For me, spending more than $8 on face cream or eye treatments was a splurge that rarely happened, because on those few occasions I did decide to branch out and 'go a little crazy' hoping to find something that really blew me away, I was always less than impressed.
...That is, until I found Cosmedix
My first experience with Cosmedix products was on a visit to an amazing spa for my first facial treatment ever. At the urging of a good friend who thoroughly convinced me I was missing out on one of the greatest things in life, and having just received a very generous gift certificate to this particular spa for my 30th birthday, I decided I would treat myself to a spa facial and see what all the fuss was about.
After talking with me for a few minutes about my skincare concerns (dark spots/ sun damage, fine lines, etc.) and assessing my skin type (normal to dry), the aesthetician prepared a special mixture of products tailored for my needs. She explained that the only line of products they used for facials in their spa was Cosmedix, because they are exclusively prepared with 'chirally correct' molecules and filtered for a very precise formulation.
"What the heck does 'Chirally Correct' mean??"
Well, had I paid closer attention in chemistry, I would have remembered that 'chirality' refers to the way certain molecules of the same compound can have mirror images of themselves and still technically be the same compound, but in some instances behave differently. The 'left hand' version doesn't fit in with other compounds the same way that the 'right hand' version of the molecule does.
So, when Cosmedix talks about being 'chirally correct', it means that it filters out the mirror images of the molecules and only uses all the same exact copies of the molecule in question to increase efficiency and prevent the un-usable extraneous molecules from building up on the surface of the skin and causing redness and irritation. Only the ones that 'fit' perfectly with the chemical compounds on the surface of the skin will react positively and are actually used by the skin. See the two videos to the right for Cosmedix's interesting explanation of how their product uses chirality.
Do you ever regret NOT buying something??
After my facial, my aesthetician wrote down the products she used and gave me a treatment plan for how to use them (morning only, morning and night, once a week, etc.) for best results. She said only the tiniest amount is necessary, and they last a long time because you barely have to use any. On my way out, I stopped to pick up the three things she suggested, then after my terrible sticker shock, I ended up walking out without any of them. I just wasn't prepared to make the leap from spending $8 dollars on one thing to $80, let alone buying three all at once. Just couldn't do it.
However, not even two days later I was looking online, reading reviews, doing more research, and comparing prices. My face felt so soft that I couldn't stop touching it and had such a wonderful healthy glow that I did a double-take every time I caught a glance of myself in the mirror. It was just too painful to go back to my cheap face cream that I was really only using because I never found anything better. After reading review after review with glowing praise for all the products I was looking at, I decided to bite the bullet.
I purchased Cosmedix brand 'Emulsion Intense Hydrator' for moisture, 'Lightning Serum' to reduce my dark discoloration, and 'Benefit Balance Antioxidant Prep' toner all at once (because I found an online coupon for 20% off and got free shipping and free gifts and samples). I have since also tried Cosmedix 'Define Vitamin A Resurfacing Treatment' and 'Reflect SPF 30 spray-on Natural Sunscreen'. At the time, none of these products were available at Amazon.com, which is where I now go exclusively for all my Cosmedix products because I can find free shipping and usually better than 20% off!
How I Use My Favorite Cosmedix Skin Care Products
It has now been over three years, and I don't ever let myself run out of any of my Cosmedix products. I am so happy to have found something that truly works for me and that I know is worth the money I spend on it! They really do last quite a while;
I use the Define resurfacing treatment once or twice a week in the evenings before moisturizing to improve skin texture. The jar lasts me about a year, and it really helps to smooth rough spots and reduce pore size. I think I paid around $55 last time I bought it (although it retails for $74), and that's not bad for a whole year!
I use the Lightning Serum 2-4 times a week in the evenings before I moisturize, isolating use to only the dark spots I want to lighten. My aesthetician reminded me that if I used it all over, I would be lightening all my skin at the same pace, and therefore wouldn't see any visible results. I use a cotton swab to dab a small amount of serum on the discolored areas only. This also lasts about a year or sometimes more, and retails for $48. It is currently available for around $36 at Amazon.com.
It is always important to use sunscreen every day to protect your skin from sun damage, but it is especially important if you are using products like the Lightning Serum and the Define Vitamin A Resurfacing Treatment as they make your skin more sensitive to the sun's rays. Also, not using a high SPF sunscreen when using a product to lighten your sun damage dark spots just entirely defeats the purpose, as you can undo all the progress you've made for the last six months of carefully applying Lightning Serum in just one hour unprotected in the sun. I use the Reflect spray-on sunscreen every morning, by spraying it into the palm of my hand, rubbing my hands together, then smoothing gently over my entire face. It is an excellent non-greasy non-comedogenic formula, and the bottle lasts about 10 months! Retail price is $44 but you can find it on Amazon for $34-38.
I use the Emulsion Intense Hydrator every evening, and sometimes in the morning (usually in the winter I use it twice a day), so this lasts 7-8 months, and it is hands down the best facial moisturizer I have ever used. It is never greasy and a tiny drop, smaller than pea-size, covers your whole face and really gives your skin a beautiful, luminous glow. I love, love, LOVE this product! It also retails for $74, but is usually around $54 at Amazon.com.
The Benefit Balance Antioxidant Prep is the first thing I use in the morning. It is in a fine misting spray bottle, and you spray 2-3 mists onto your hand, rub your hands together, and pat gently on your face avoiding the eye area. This probably lasts me about 7-9 months as I usually end up ordering the Emulsion and this one together. Retail price is $34 but is available on Amazon.com for $25-28 usually.
Amazon.com is now always the first place I go for all of my Cosmedix products. I encourage you to hop over and read the reviews on any of the skincare treatments you may be considering before you buy! I would also suggest looking for great deals on eBay, as there are often listings for several of the most popular Cosmedix moisturizers and serums.
