DIY Facial Skin Care Regimen - All Natural Kitchen and Home Ingredients
My Boring Days Led me to Making Beauty Mixtures at Home
When I was in my teens, there was no internet then. My past time included watching cable specifically HBO and Barney (I was 12, ok?), reading books and comics (Sweet Valley Twins and Archie), going to the mall and just sitting by the fountain side and DIY projects like clothes, educational board games, and skin care concoctions.
Dermatologist Wanna Be - Mixing Oils and Herbs to Create Whatever
I really believe that my love for organic stuff started way back when I was still clueless about it because I would find ingredients at home (our home, my grandma’s kitchen and garden and my aunt’s herb cabinet) and concoct whatever. I remember making lip balm, facial cleanser, facial toner, facial moisturizer (from oil), facial mask, facial scrub, tanning solution, cologne, underarm whitening and soaps.
I was not able to take pictures then – no iPhone in the 90’s for picture taking and selfies, but I remember clearly those weekends where I would make such a mess just to have something to do.
I just want to share what I remember...
Note: If you are to make these skin care solutions at home, please, do not make a large amount as these natural ingredients will spoil easily.
Honey-Aloe Vera Mixture
Facial Cleanser: Honey and Aloe Vera
My grandma has the green thumb. She is amazing with plants and orchids and I lived with her most of my childhood life. Basically, I am used to having lots of plants around me, but unfortunately for me, I did not possess her gift.
Aloe Vera Gel
Anyway, I took my grandpa’s honey bottle (He loves to make apple cider and honey juice) and one of my grandma’s aloe vera plant.
When she saw me cut her aloe vera, she just smiled and helped me.
She picked it up and told me that what I want to use as a skin care cleanser is the gel.
We both went back inside the house and she cleaned the aloe vera leaf for me.
She also cut the thorny edges and scooped out the gel inside the leaf and gave it to me.
I mixed the gel with the honey because she said that honey will make my skin really smooth and so I did.
1 tbsp Honey
1 tbsp Aloe Vera gel from Aloe Vera leaf
1 tbsp water
How to Use this Honey-Aloe Vera Cleanser
Wet face with lukewarm water. Apply the mixture and massage for a bit. Let it stay for a few minutes. Rinse with tap water.
Facial Toner: Lemon Juice and Basil
I had that skin care idea because of my Home Economics teacher. As I have said in my other hub, I grew up with acne and pimples. She told me that if I mix basil leaves and water, it will dry up my acne growth. Adding the lemon juice was all me. I read in a book that lemon juice can whiten underarms and unclog pores.
Now, as I read about it, basil leaves have a skin soothing effect.
It is also an anti-aging herb and has whitening properties.
What made me smile was the fact that basil can inhibit pimple and acne growth.
(Thanks to my teacher, Mrs. Lo for teaching me this skin care mixture.)
20 leaves of Basil
1 cup of water
Half a slice of lemon, squeeze the juice
Boil the leaves. Let it cool. Add the lemon juice.
How to Use Lemon-Basil Toner
After cleansing your face, dab the cotton of this mixture. Apply on face. No need to rinse. But if you want to, it is fine. But let it stay on your face for at least 10 minutes.
Facial Moisturizer: Rosemary Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil
I saw my aunt apply VCO on her elbows one day and I asked her why. She said that VCO healed her flaky elbows (she is diabetic).
I asked her if VCO can heal my pimples. She laughed and teased me – but she said yes.
As I was about to apply the VCO on my face as a skin care moisturizer, I saw my grandma’s Rosemary Oil.
She brought it from one of her trips in California. I put a few drops of it on my VCO because it was fragrant.
My grandma used the Rosemary oil for her aromatherapy thing.
Rosemary oil, as I later found out, has an astringent characteristic. It is also an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral.
1 tbsp VCO
5 drops Rosemary oil
Be careful when mixing oils. Do not use a spoon. Use a glass or wooden stirrer. Put inside a glass bowl. You can also use plastic if you like. Be gentle when mixing oils together. Slow strokes when mixing.
How to Use VCO-Rosemary Oil Moisturizer
Apply a small amount of the oils on your face. Leave it to dry and absorb on your skin. Do not rinse.
My CTM Regimen Now: Bee Wash, Clarifying Solution & Argan Oil
At the present time, my organic skin care regimen includes the Bee Wash that I use as a cleanser (Honey and Witch Hazel), the Clarifying Solution as my toner (Lactic Acid, Kojic Powder and Hamamelis Virginiana) and Argan Oil for my moisturizer.
I do not make my DIY projects anymore and I kind of miss it. But buying is more convenient than making. LOL.
From Argan Oil to Spin Trap® Anti-Aging Serum?
I was also contemplating on using Spin Trap® Anti-Aging Serum as my skin care moisturizer instead of my usual Argan Oil. My mom has been using it for 2 months now and she looks marvelous for a 56 year old grandma of 7.
I read that it can be used for all skin types and as a primer. I also like the fact that it is inexpensive compared to other moisturizers/primers. I don't think I will be able to DIY my way on this one. It has a lot of ingredients - extracts and oils. I am really interested with this one.
Can someone give me feedback on Spin Trap® Anti-Aging Serum? Have you tried it?
