Dolphin Tattoo Designs And Meanings

Dolphin tattoo designs can symbolize many different meanings. In fact, many dolphin tattoo meanings are very positive. When we look at the dolphin through history, it has been a symbolic sign for many different cultures. Dolphins have played many roles throughout life, some realistic and some imaginary. The dolphin has been portrayed in mythology for centuries, alongside other sea creatures and mermaids. Dolphins and mermaids are seen together in certain art styles and in ancient tales. Dolphin and mermaid tattoo designs may be something to consider. They are seen together in tattoos as well. Life the dolphin, the mermaid is portrayed as graceful and peaceful. It is still uncertain why dolphins are portrayed beside other creatures in mythology that are not seen for their peaceful ways. These creatures were often fierce and evil, but the dolphin is neither. The dolphin has a good image in mythology, unlike other creatures that roam the deep blue oceans.

The Celtic culture and the dolphin have forever been connected to one another for many years. Celtic dolphin tattoo designs may be an ideal tattoo for you. This is why you see a lot of dolphin tattoos done in Celtic knots or Celtic art. The Celts believed that the waters had the power to cleanse the body, soul and mind. They believed that the waters had the power to take away your problems. Some cultures also believed that the soul could be cleansed the dolphin and the waters that they inhabit. But among them all, the Celts were the most distinguished with these beliefs. To the Celtic, the dolphin is a symbol of guidance and prosperity. You may be seeking guidance in life or seeking to have prosperity in your life. Both meanings are described by the dolphin symbol.

When it comes to tattoos, this is why you see many of them with the dolphin and water. One popular symbolic meaning of the dolphin tattoo is rebirth. You may be wanting to make a change in your lifestyle or you may feel you need to cleanse your body. The dolphin tattoo is a sign for both. As you can already see in most of the images on this article, the dolphin tattoo usually has the water with the design. For symbolic purposes, as to the Celts, the waters are just as important as the dolphin.

In ancient Greece, the dolphin is associated with the gods. Apollo and the goddess Aphrodite are both symbolic to the dolphin. Apollo represents the sun and Aphrodite represents the moon. As you can see in the tattoo at the top right, the dolphin is seen with the sun. The sun dolphin and the moon dolphin both hold symbolic meaning. Below, you can find the traits and meanings of both.

MORE DOLPHIN MEANINGS

The dolphin tattoo can represent many different meanings, as well as each dolphin type. Below, you can find more meanings of the dolphin tattoo. Remember though, in the end, your dolphin tattoo represents what you want it too. Below, you can find those meanings.

  • Loyal
  • Playful
  • Intelligent
  • Free willed
  • Balanced
  • Freedom
  • Gentle
  • Resurrection

Many people choose to get a dolphin tattoo because they feel that they share similar traits with the dolphins. When it comes to choosing a tattoo or a dolphin design, this is something that you may want to think about. As we look at the dolphin's nature and habits, we can easily begin to understand all their traits and abilities. The dolphin is a very playful creature. For centuries, the dolphin has been observed by seamen, sailors, and fishermen. They reported watching the dolphins swim along the side of their boats and vessels. This is where we get one example of the meaning "playful" from. One more example is the dolphins in sea parks. They can be taught to do tricks, which show how intelligent they really are. Another strong trait of the dolphin is that they are "family oriented". You hardly ever see these animals traveling alone. The dolphins take care of the young and protect them as well.

The dolphin is also very sociable. Out of all the creatures and animals in the world, the dolphins are one of the top most sociable. When we watch dolphins in the wild, we can easily see how social they are among the entire pod. This is also seen in sea parks where they constantly interact with humans and other dolphins. When we watch the dolphins, we can see that they always appear to be happy. Out of all the different symbols in tattoos and art, the dolphin ranks very high because of the variety of different meanings.

According to the Chinese yin-yang, two dolphins are a sign of harmony. The dolphin also represents balance and stability. The dolphin fits well with the yin-yang of the Chinese. The dolphin lives in the water, but breathes air. In ancient cultures, they refer to the dolphin as "being in two worlds at once". As you have already read, the dolphin is part of many different ancient cultures. The dolphin is also seen in Christian art. Christians symbolize the dolphins in Christian art as a symbol of the resurrection. This meaning relates to the meaning of rebirth.

Dolphins are also associated with dreams. Dolphins are believed to represent the relationship of the world around a person when they dream. In other ancient cultures, the dolphin is considered the king of the fish. From dreams to water, one thing is for certain, the dolphin is a symbol of many different meanings and interpretations. This is probably one of the main reasons that the dolphin design is often sought after as a tattoo.

Dolphin tattoos come in a variety of different designs and shapes. They are one of the few designs that look good big or small. The dolphin can be placed in a variety of different locations on the body. This actually gives you a lot of options to think about when considering a dolphin tattoo. Because of all the meanings and different styles of the dolphin, it is a very popular tattoo design.

Although it hasn't been mentioned yet, the dolphin tattoo is also used as a remembrance tattoo. It makes since because the dolphin is a symbol of rebirth. In such tattoos, there are usually two dolphins placed in these tattoos. Because of the Chinese meaning of two dolphins, which is harmony, it symbolizes the rebirth and harmony to the one that is remembered.

Dolphin Tattoo And Dolphin Tattoos Designs

For anyone having a hard time at choosing a final tattoo style and design, the dolphin is a great choice. The dolphin is very popular among women. The dolphin tattoo is also wore by men. The dolphin tattoo adds beauty to the body. The best thing about the dolphin tattoo is that it holds a large variety of symbolic meanings that date back centuries. If you haven't already, you can find the dolphin meanings above in this article.

When you are considering a tattoo, it is very important to do all your research on the different styles, designs, and meanings. With the dolphin tattoo, you may want it because it is a beautiful design. There is nothing wrong with that. Even so, you still want to research the dolphin because there is a vast variety of different styles that can be associated with this symbol. In the images above, you can see Celtic dolphins done in Celtic knot work and tribal dolphins done in tribal art. You also may want to research the sun dolphin and the moon dolphin. When it comes to the dolphin symbol, there is a lot to research.

You also have to think about where you want the tattoo placed on the body. As I said before, the dolphin tattoo looks good big and small. It can also be placed in a large variety of different places on the body. For women, the dolphin tattoo is often placed on the back shoulders, between the shoulders, lower back, and on the ankles. You may want to be aware of the fact that we are judged for our tattoos. You may want to place your tattoo where it can be hidden if needed. But if you don't care what people think, put it anywhere you wish. But between employment and social gatherings, it may be something that you want to consider.

For men, the tattoo is usually placed on the upper arm. Men usually get the dolphin tattoo for symbolic purposes rather then for beauty as women do. Another location that men choose for this design is the calf. Of course, they are placed in other areas on the body, but these two are the main locations.

Great hub. I love dolphins and my heart always leaps when I see them at the beach or following alongside a boat that I'm in.

Like your other tattoo hubs, this one is very well researched and it was very interesting learning the symbolism behind dolphin tattoos and the different meanings that other cultures assign to dolphins.

My favorite image in this hub is the two dolphins in the shape of a heart with the sun coming up between them.

Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful and interesting.

Interesting but it looks like most of the dolphin tattoos have at least two colors, with blue being the most popular second color. Voting this Up and Beautiful.

I haven't seen a dolphin tattoo in a while! Dolphins are one of my favorite animals, but I do not know if I would get one tattooed onto my body. I do think you brought some interesting insight as to what motivates people to get them!

HBN, thanks for coming by and thanks for your time and comment. I really like that tattoo also. I believe the sun adds the right amount of color to the tattoo. If you go all blue, it doesn't stand out as well. Thanks for the compliments Gail. Best wishes to you and take care.

So interesting! I've always liked dolphins and we have a dolphin wind chime on our front porch.

I think my favorite one here is the dolphin made up of the Celtic knot.

Interesting, well-written and fun hub on Dolphin tattoos. I really enjoyed your great pictures. Yikes, some of the places people put tattoos look painful. For example: the fool or ankle. I also enjoyed reading about all the symbology with dolphins. Hit every button except funny :-)

femmeflashpoint 5 years ago

Lyric,

For the record, I don't have a single tattoo, but I still love reading your hubs about them. This one is defnitely my favorite. The information regarding dolphins and culture is excellent and the photos you included were beautiful examples of so many ways they can be inked.

Voted up, and I ticked every button as well, w/ exception to funny. ;)
