Essential Oils for Stuffy Nose
Very old remedies that work!
One of the most absolute frustrating things about having a cold is not being able to breathe from both nostrils. This typically seems to get worse just before calling it a night as we lay our heads down on our pillows trying to sleep it off. Its times like this when we become very desperate, and will try just about anything to feel better and breathe again.
If you were given two choices to treat this horrible condition, one being a nasal spray that may give you instant clear nasal passages for a short period of time, with possible side effects and addiction, or two, a couple of drops from an essential oil that has worked for thousands of years having a proven track record and no nasty side effects and addictions.
If you have picked the second choice, then I would like to introduce to you the essential oil Myrtle. Myrtle is a native plant from North Africa that has been used for aromatherapy for a very long time. In fact you can find Myrtle mentioned in the Bible several times, Nehemiah 8:15, Isaiah 41:19, 55:13 and Zechariah 1:8, 10, 11.
Myrtle essential oil
Myrtle essential oil is most often used for its antiseptic properties, and though it is not often mentioned in aromatherapy text, is often used in aromatherapy to help treat oily skin, acne, coughs, colds, anxiety, infections, bronchitis, and asthma to name a few. Myrtle is an evergreen shrub or small tree, and is from the same plant family as eucalyptus. The method in which this oil is taken from the plant is the method called extraction. This is done by steam distillation from the leaves and twigs of the plant. The flowers are sometimes used which can influence the variation of scents from the oils when made from different regions.
A simple and safe way to clear a stuffy nose
Though there are many use’s this wonderful oil provides, I would like to share with you its ability to clear a stuffy nose. Simply add a couple of drops on a Q-tip and swab the inside of your nostrils. That’s it; you should immediately begin to feel an improvement. Natural remedies such as this and the use of Neti Pots are wonderful natural alternatives to help get rid of a stuffy nose. I have also used peppermint essential oil to help clear my nasal passages. With the peppermint I will often put a few drops to a tissue or cotton ball and pin it to my collar on my shirt, or tuck in my pillowcase before I go to bed. Be sure to wash your hands after handling this oil. Try not to get any on you, if you do get some peppermint oil on your fingers and then rub your face or itch your eyes, it will burn. If this does happen which it had for me, just flush the eyes out with water and the burning should stop immediately.
You should always consult with your doctor, herbalist or qualified healthcare practitioner before trying any new remedies whether they are natural or not. Though these natural tips are generally safe, every one of us is different and can react differently. Know your body and always consult with a reputable healthcare practitioner who preferably knows you to consult any questions or concerns you may have with natural remedies.
