Spa-At-Home: Homemade Facials & Face Mask Recipes

Facial masks should be an integral part of every woman's beauty regime. Not only do they replenish our skin, but they force us, in an unobtrusive way, to take time for ourselves and relax; after all, it's impossible to get much of anything done with a layer of creamy goodness slathered over your face, and cucumbers over your eyes.

But why get dressed up and go out to a salon, when you can get the same benefits, and remain comfortable in your own space? The answer is: there is no reason. Below I've included recipes for my favorite at-home face masks. Each provides unique benefits, but all are quick and easy to blend up at home, with ingredients you use every day. Hey, you can even make yourself a smoothie while you're at it.

Nourish: Banana-Avacado Mask

  • 1/2 over-ripe banana
  • 1/2 over-ripe avacado
  • 2 Tbsp unflavored full-fat yogurt
  • 1 tsp olive oil

Mash banana and avacado, combine with other ingredients, and mix well. Apply liberally to face and neck. Leave on for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Exfoliate: Tomato-Lemon Mask

  • 1 over-ripe tomato
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp instant oatmeal

Put all ingredients in blender, puree until smooth. Apply to face, let soak 20 minutes, rinse with warm water.

Tighten: Peach Mask

  • 1 ripe peach
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp unflavored full-fat yogurt

Peel and pit the peach. Blend together with egg white and yogurt until smooth. Pat gently onto face. Leave on 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

Smooth: Honey-Almond Mask

  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1/2 tsp almond oil
  • 1 Tbsp yogurt

Mix all ingredients together until well blended. Apply layer to face, leave on 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water, gently wipe residue with a damp cloth.

Refresh: Cucumber-Parsley Mask

  • 1 Tbsp unflavored full-fat yogurt
  • 1 Tbsp chopped cucumber
  • 1 Tbsp fresh parsley

Puree cucumber and parsley until smooth. Add yogurt and mix well. Apply mixture to skin, let sit 15-20 minutes. Rinse with cool water.

Reduce Oil: Yeast-Yogurt Mask

  • 1 tsp brewer's yeast
  • 2 Tbsp unflavored full-fat yogurt

Mix enough yogurt into the yeast to make a thin paste. Pat gently onto oily areas and allow to dry. Leave on no longer than 20 minutes. Rinse first with warm water, then cold. Blot dry.

Moisturize: Chocolate Mask

  • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp cottage cheese
  • 4 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp oatmeal

Mix all ingredients in blender. Smooth onto face. Let sit 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Note: Make sure to follow all masks with an oil-free moisturizer. Each person has individual allergies and tolerances, so make sure to test mixture on a section of your arm or leg to make sure you do not have an adverse reactions to the ingredients before applying to entire face.

For your chapped lips, try using lip balm regularly. If you don't have any, you can simply use vegetable oil... just be careful not to lick it off.

Skin-lightening creams are damaging to your skin. We all have different natural skin colors. Embrace yours! If you don't want to darken, wear sunscreen.

I have tried almost every product on the market for my acne-prone skin. The ONLY PRODUCT that made me notice a significant reduction of acne was the Shielo Complexion Scrub.

This scrub did leave my face feeling less oily and cleaner.

I use it approximately 2-3 times per week after cleansing and it has yet to dry my face out. It's not perfect, but I think it works about as well as some of the prescription treatments that i've used.

If you have severe acne, I highly recommend it. I bought online at Shielo's website, which also has free shipping.

If you have oily skin, you should be able to apply the mask fairly frequently. I would try every other day to start, and if you don't feel any irritation, go ahead and bump it up to daily use.

These should be safe for someone of any age, as long as they do not have allergies to the ingredients. You should do a small test of the mask on the inside of her wrist to see if it irritates the skin, if you are concerned. I recommend getting an adult's help.

Why use a natural facial mask?

Natural facial masks are a wonderful and soothing way to recuperate and moisturize your facial skin. Despite what some people think, they are a vital part in taking care of your skin. While some people do go a little extreme with these and use them daily, I would recommend maybe once a week, or once every other week. Another benefit is that consistent facial masks will also help you avoid common skin disorders, plus help make you look and feel younger.

Face mask or facial masks are useful in treating your skin problems.

Natural elements used in facial masks can treat your skin disorders.

Most natural facial masks found on the market today will work two ways. Firstly, by moisturizing your skin while also deep cleaning, this helps in cleaning out your pores completely by getting rid of oils and built up dirt. Secondly, the wonderful effect of natural facial masks is the removal of dead skin. Typically after you remove your facial mask, you will scrape off the dead skin, which will also help in making you feel younger and healthier. You see, the skin under the dead skin is younger, and tighter. So when you remove this dead cover of skin, you reveal a much younger looking skin!

The purpose of a natural facial mask is to improve skin and outlook of the face,

depending on the type of skin as following:

To absorb oil

To moisturize dry skin

To replenish dull skin

Facial masks are very nutritious.

After applying a facial mask, you will feel fresh and people will notice your much younger looking face.

1. Always test the mask, particularly if you have a sensitive skin. Apply a small amount behind your ear or inside of the elbow, wait for at least 30 minutes, then wash off. If there is no unpleasant reaction in the next 24 hours, then only apply the mask on your face.

2. Rinse mask thoroughly with warm water followed with cold water.

3. Don't apply masks more than twice a week.

4. When applying a facial mask, you should try to avoid area around your eyes and lips.

5. Vary the facial mask type to see their effects on your skin.

What is a natural facial mask without a soothing application? One of the best things about a facial mask is the repose, right? When it is time to put on that facial mask, you’ll want to start by washing your face in warm water. Warm water opens up your pores and gets them ready to receive the natural elements of the facial mask. An optional procedure, give your face a soft massage. This will make you feel unbelievable.

Cleaning of face before applying a face mask

1. Splash cold water on your face.

2. Massage vitamin E on your face while your face is still damp (not wet).

3. Remove the oil from the face using a mild soap after 5 minutes.

4. Again splash your face with water at room temperate. Let your face dry naturally.

5. Note: You can do the above face cleaning daily even if you are not applying a facial mask.

Applying a natural facial mask

As you apply the natural facial mask, you will want to massage it into your facial skin as well. Take your time and don’t rush. After it is on, you’ll typically want to let it soak into your facial skin for at least (30) thirty minutes. What should you do during those thirty minutes? Draw a warm bath, take a nap, just relax and let the natural facial mask do its work. When it comes time to take it off, you will want to use cold water. Firstly, it stimulates and revitalizes your facial skin. Secondly, it will close your pores and keep them from getting any of that horrible dirt or oils that usually ruin your facial skin.

Now, when we talk about natural facial masks, these are facial masks that are made out of natural, elements. I have found that the “Active Skin Care Products”, especially their “Natural Facial Masks Kits” which are great for treating and taking care of your facial skin because of the natural elements they are produced with.

Remember, you are going to want to apply these natural facial masks once a week, maybe twice a week at the most. This will help keep your facial skin healthy, and natural. Not to mention, keeping you looking younger than before!

Hi, I have just created a new face mask. It helps smooth skin, open pores, and give your face a tightned look. I am only 11 years old, and wanted to experiment.

You'll Need:

3 spoons of Low Fat Vanilla Yogurt

4 Spoons Of Egg Whites, Or Egg Beaters [recommended]

A dash of lime juice.

Add the ingrediants together, and mix well.

Rise off your face, and get your face wet. Then apply your 'cream' to your face. Keep on for 3 minutes, and WHAM! Smoother, tighter skin!

Great ideas; more people should know abouy the benefits of real natural cosmetics and use them.

As a skin care specialist for over 30 years I have no doubt that the only natural products beneficial for the skin could be found in your refrigerator and NOT at the cosmetic counter

I love face masks- you're right, its the few minutes of the week you actually get to lie down and relax! I usually prefer the more refreshing face mask, but the chocolate one sounds too good not to try!

These are great recipes. I love the idea of chocolate. I've tried many of the recipes you've mentioned, not only for facials, but all over body care. I do massage and body scrubs. One of my scrubs contains sugar, mixed with precious and essential oils. Works great and leaves skin so soft.

Thanks for this valuable information!

What ingredients would you like to substitute? You can easily use yogurt instead of cottage cheese, but I'm not sure what else you're trying to incorporate.

Julie 8 years ago

omg these sound so good i think i will do one tonight!

Can you substitute some items from the chocolate recipe and switch them with similar ones?

Please comment back!

Like any facial masque, you shouldn't apply it too close to your eyes.

Your tomato-lemon recipe. Wouldn't that sting your eyes if you got it in your eyes?

Home facial treatments are great and far less expensive (usually) than store brands. However having been in the beauty industry for over 25 years I would strongly recommend seeking out a professionals evaluation of your skin and skincare needs. Not all acne is the same nor is dry skin necessarily dry. You need to know what your real issues are before you treat the wrong cause and create bigger problems. Invest a little time and money first by having a professional analyze your skin then go home and make your own mask. Just remember the added benefits of steam and manual minipulation of the limph nodes and pressure points in reducing alot of the "causes" of skin irritation and problems. Of course change in diet, smoking and alcohol consumption will also do wonders for tired dehydrated skin.

Hi :)

Great recipes you have there, I'm sure most of the people can find the ingredients at home and that's great because a lot of people can do those :)

flutterbug77 profile image

I never take time to give myself a facial. Why? I think I'll do one soon. By the way, have you ever tried to put a cooled-down tea bag on your face, especially around your eyes? It tightens and tones your skin. You look silly when your laying there with tea bags on your face but it feels good.

cheer chick:

A paste of ground radish seeds and distilled/purified water can help dry up blackheads if you apply it directly to your problem spots.

If you have regular breakouts, you might want to think about getting yourself an acne care system with salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide, like Proactiv which you can read about here:

secret celeb:

It depends on which one you're using, and the state of your skin beforehand. On many you can see (or feel) results immediately afterwards, but generally you'll see the best benefits the next morning, after your skin has had a chance to fully react and rebalance.

The only recipe here that uses nut oil, unless I'm mistaken, is the Honey-Almond mask. You can easily substitute another oil like avocado or olive for any nut oil. Hope that helps.

KAS 8 years ago

Love these receipies! Just a question: I'm allergic to nuts so anything in the ground nut or nut oil department is off limits to me, which automatically throws out half of the receipies :( what can I use for a substitute?

here is an awesome recipe for acne that i made (i hav dry, sensitive skin, but still get acne and it works great!)

-grind a handful of oatmeal with some almonds (as many as you want)

-add some ingredients from ur herb shelf like a few sprinkles of cocao powder, ground mint leaves, paprika, cinnamon powder, ground coconut (if you don't have all these ingredients improvise! turmeric does wonders for skin so why not try it out?!)

tip-for a nice smell, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender, thyme, rosemary...)

- mix in a capful of vanilla, some honey, and a tbsp of witch hazel.

- to make a paste add water (you can use milk, but i like water because it'll last longer. it'll look super gross but when u get it on your face, it feels cool and refreshing, also it looks a bit like a mudmask.

-i like to refrigerate it before i use it, because it is nice and cool then :) leave the mask on for 10 minutes or so, then rinse off and tone (you can moisturize if your skin feels too dry)

hope this helps
