Industry Trends

The industry of Fashion increased its number of openings available in the USA by 36% from May 2008 to November 2009, with 26,600+ openings advertised nationwide on January 2, 2009. A good quantity of openings in a career field is a plausible rationale for seeking employment in that field. Job seekers that enjoy the world of fashion, graphic design, arts, modeling, and communcations would likely have some talent in this industry.

Not all fashion jobs are in design, but other jobs can be a starting point from which to pursue that career, Reality shows such as Project Runway create a new audience, a larger buyer's market, and greater excitement that can spur job seekers into success in design.

Patty, great Hub. I especially liked the pretty girls all in red. Most of them outshone our former first lady, but I'm a Republican so, so what? I always learn things from your Hubs. I wasn't so much interested in getting a fashion job, but in how you are so clever in presenting this information and the titles to the ads from Amazon on such esoteric stuff as Sears Apparel, Joseph A. Banks clothing, Project Runaway and more. Thanks, Don

Hi Don - I had no idea, until I began reading more, about JoS A. Bank and Sears and their businesses. Many more jobs are aviable in fashion than I thought, especially for a recession. Some of the contestants on Project Runway were very stressed and nearly foaming at the mouth when I watched -- This must reflect the high level of competition in the industry that I keep seeing referenced.

Thanks Patty. Very thorough and informative. When I think of fashion industry I usually think of models and photographers, but there are plenty of other positions in the industry. It is interesting that the field would be growing at a time most of us are cutting back on spending. Could be a good sign of an economic recovery!
