Fashion Trends of Fall 2010: Leather

As the days of summer come to a close, retailers are changing their window displays to feature some of the trends that designers are touting for fall. It's all about leather, gold, and the military. In this three-part series we'll take a look at what is surprising in these three trends. Part 2 is here.

Leather Jackets, Leather Dresses, Leather Mini Skirts -- Oh My!

Leather jackets are classic but you'll find that the difference is in the softer, more feminine details such as ruffles. The classic black sheath dress looks more sophisticated in leather. Much of this is made possible because of the new tanning processes in leather. Tall leather thigh high boots make an impression and are the footwear of choice by the fashion designers although you'll find many who favor the ankle boots in leather as well. When it comes to nightlife, leather has brought up new possibilities.

The Little Black Sheath Dress in Leather

Leather has come a long way from being the rebel's biker jacket. New ways of processing leather has given many fashion designers new ideas in using it in ways they haven't before. Previously, leather was a thick and heavy material and was only used for outdoorsy clothing such as jackets and rugged boots which protected the wearer from the elements. Leather was also used for accessories such as bags, belts, and day-planners. Now, the news processes in leather make it luxuriously thin, supple and light that it can be made for dresses and it would be comfortable.

Leather jackets can be ruffled and come in colors other than black, brown or tan. Wearing leather used to be a rebel's uniform but not anymore. Leather has grown up and become chic, feminine, and sophisticated. A leather sheath dress in black makes for a sexy, classy look that's slightly naughty. You can wear that leather black sheath dress to dinner at a fancy restaurant then to a night of dancing.  Leather can also be used for trimming a dress and can be used for day into the night. Women now have more choices than a leather mini skirt for the evening.

Leather mini skirts will always be around but now leather skirts don't mean just the mini. Flowing A-line skirts, leather skirts with ruffles, the new processing has made leather a supple and flowing material which make these skirts viable options.

When it comes to footwear, the new processing in leather have designers showing very supple above-the-knee length boots. Boots with shoe-lacing all the way to the top seems to be a favored look for the thigh high boots as well as for the shorter ankle boots. Bows are also prevalent in boots whatever the cut.

For women who love to wear leather, this season is an extravaganza. For women who haven't considered wearing leather before, take a new look at these new approaches to clothing and be pleasantly surprised at these wonderful choices that can give you a brand new look.

These lace-up thigh high leather boots go perfectly with a denim mini skirt for a casual but flirty look. Pair it with a twill mini skirt and you have the preppy but sexy style.

The ankle boot with the bow is a new look for fall. Pencil thin knit pants or skinny jeans would go well with these boots.
