Modern Short Hair Styles that Give You a Professional Look

Five Modern, Short Hair Styles That Save You Time

Many professional women can save so much time if they do just the one thing. Choose a simple hairstyle that requires little maintenance. Think about it, we do so much with our hair. We wake up, we blow-dry it, we use tools to straighten the hair or add curls, we add gel to keep it in place and it normally takes us more than the first try for us to be satisfied with how our hair looks.

Below are five easy hairstyles that will suit everyone. Pick the style that will go with your workplace. If you work in a lawyer's office you can keep your hair long and wear it in a chignon bun. If you dare to cut your hair, a bob or pixie cut means less time to do your hair than wash your face. A ponytail will help you to look sleek during a meeting. If you're a doctor or nurse, nothing beats the practicality of the ponytail and still keep you looking professional. If you're worried that a pixie cut would not be festive enough for after-hours, perish that thought by using accessories. And the pixie cut will show off those beautiful earrings. If you work in a trendy office, try a loose braid so that you have a different but modern look from everyone else.

Aishwarya Rai has a great ponytail. The look is sleek, well put-together and effortless.

Classic Ponytail

It's the simplest hairstyle there is. This look is great if your office is more trendy and you are in your twenties to early thirties. It has to look sleek, not curly. Aishwarya Rai, an Indian celebrity, executes a beautiful ponytail style.

Modern Bun

Don't think of the bun as an old woman's hairstyle. It's a great way to keep long hair looking neat and professional and it's so easy to do. The most important thing to remember is not to keepy your bun severe, so don't pull you hair so tight, keep it relaxed and sleek. To achieve this look you can use gel or hairspray. The elegant chignon bun is classic and can take you from the boardroom to your office without worrying that your hair will be out of place. See the link below to pull together your own modern bun.

Relaxed Braid

The relaxed braid is fairly new in the office. To make it look professional instead of little-girl, you actually braid your hair, and bring it over your shoulder to one side. The braid needs to be loose and you need to either use gel or hairspray so that stray ends of hair don't stick out, after you're done the look is sleek.

Classic Bob

The classic bob cut is one of those hairstyles that shows such versatility. The bob can be long enough to reach down to your shoulder or short, as in chin-length. You can wear it with bangs or swept to the side. You can have the back cut shorter than the front for swingier hair or one length for a classic look.

Katie Holmes shows what you can do with the bob cut. Wear it with bangs, a center part and hair styled under for a classic bob or style the hair with a side part, no bangs and the ends out for a windswept effect.

The Pixie Cut

So many women are attached to long hair that they balk at getting a haircut shorter than their shoulder length. But there are so many fabulous women who have had a pixie cut. Off the top of my head I think Leslie Caron, Mia Farrow, Katie Holmes. Women who wear the pixie haircut are bold and confident. And getting your hair ready is such a breeze and you can look together in a few minutes. For a professional woman whose time is money, it's a perfect haircut and your hair will never fall out of place.

In addition, looking good in a pixie cut is not restricted to young women. Look at Dame Judy Dench in her pixie cut. She looks marvelous.

There are many variations of a pixie cut, you have to get the one that's right for you and your features. If you take a look at Rihanna's pixie cut, her hair is longer on the sides with longer bangs. Dame Judy's pixie cut has no bangs and is short all over. Winona's has a combination of both.

Talk to your hairstylist about which modern, short hair style is right for you and your office. You'll come to love your new do and the extra time that you can spend on other things that you can enjoy.

I wear the bun all the time. It's classy and fits in with almost any setting. When I want to go flirty, I use a wild ponytail. Good hub.

I had mid length hair but using a hot brush most days split the ends and dried it out.

I am lucky(or unlucky whichever way you want to look at it !!) to be married to a Gents hairstylist so he just cut it off into a very modern short Pixie look..I have had it short before but wanted a longer look which was feminine....however I have had so many compliments about my new shorter look that I have decided to keep it this way ....i was uncertain at 63 ,thought it may be a bit young but I have been assured it isnt ,so its here to stay ....for a while anyway !!

Hi ExpandYourMind, yes the bun is always classy and classic.

Hi Loveslove, you're very lucky indeed, it's almost like having your own hairstylist. The pixie cut is definitely something that can be carried off by women from all ages.

Thank you ExpandYourMind and Loveslove for reading my hub.

After wearing my hair short for years, I've recently started growing it out. I even invested in a new curling iron and the new velvet hot rollers. Although decidedly more work, I love the look and am basking in the compliments!

Men are opening doors for me and guys I have worked with for years are suddenly acting as though I'm some sort of goddess. It's fun for now!

Just yesterday I went to my salon and got a pixie, much like the one pictured on Dame Judy Dench. Being in my early 50's, and still on the job market (with an interview coming up this week!), I felt the need for a serious style update. The old long bob I'd worn for over a year was looking shabby, and my hair's changing texture due to the normal aging processes was affecting how good I could make it look with the minimal effort I'm willing to expend.

I knew I'd made a good choice when a total stranger told me "That looks SO good on you!" Dame Judy and I can rock that cut from here to Timbuktu!

Flightkeeper 6 years ago from The East Coast Author

Hi PierrePierre, thanks for visiting.

Hi omcj1234, I think the braid would work really well in more relaxed, art/creative fields than in the boardroom :)

Thanks for the nice comment ArtoflegendIndia. I appreciate it.

Hi Starglade, I think you'll rock the interview with your banging pixie cut! You go girl!

Hi rugsdynamic, I think a bobcut that's tailored to your friends features can't be beat, it's classic and so versatile.

I tend to wear a low chignon to work. It keeps my hair pulled back and off my neck during the day. I love how easy it is in the morning, too!

Hi Scrapaholic, you can go almost anywhere with a chignon, and always look professional and pretty.

After many years with long hair, I went to a short bob - shorter in back, longer in front. Now I'm growing my hair out again. It was way easier to take care of when it was short! Thanks for the info and the pics, flightkeeper.

I love pixie cut, and actually tried it on 2008, but was a little hard to fix with my thick hair. So, I settled with long mane, having ponytail most of the time.

Chanel the Writer 5 years ago

I love throwing my hair up in a ponytail. So classic. But now that it's straight, I wear it down more often :) Maybe I'll try a bob sometime.

Flightkeeper profile image

Flightkeeper 5 years ago from The East Coast Author

Hi mecheil, thick hair is such a luxury! A ponytail is great and can be so adaptable.

Chanel, like the ponytail a bob is classic and can be adapted for any occasion.

Thank you both for the visit.
