DIY: Homemade Facial Skin Scrub

Homemade Facial Mask

You don't have to go out and buy a facial scrub when, more often than not, homemade recipes work better! Here is a simple and easy to make do it yourself (DIY) homemade facial scrub that you can create using basic ingredients from your kitchen. This homemade facial mask will leave your skin glowing and hydrated while exfoliating and removing dead skin cells from your face!

Ingredients

For this homemade facial scrub, you will need just 3 simple ingredients

  • Sugar
  • Buttermilk (or yogurt)
  • Ground oats, rice, OR cornmeal

1 spoonful of cornmeal for facial scrub
1 spoonful of cornmeal for facial scrub

Oats, Cornmeal, or Rice

Take about 1 spoonful of ground oats, cornmeal OR rice. Either of these 3 choices are fine. The only purpose these serve is to exfoliate your skin so it does not matter what you choose as long as it has a granule type texture and is not too rough.

1 spoonful of sugar
1 spoonful of sugar

Sugar

Next, add in 1 spoonful of sugar too. Sugar is a good exfoliator.

It acts to give you a more glowing and even skin tone because sugar has Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA's). These are used in most anti-aging skin products and help to reduce cellular cohesion meaning that they help to exfoliate and keep your skin soft with regular use

Exfoliating mix!

Mix well!

Before you add in your buttermilk make sure you mix the 2 ingredients together well.

You are trying to avoid having to mix too much once you add in your buttermilk or else some of your sugar will start to melt before you get a chance to use it to exfoliate your skin!

Add in 3 spoonfuls of buttermilk (or yogurt)
Add in 3 spoonfuls of buttermilk (or yogurt)

Add your buttermilk or yogurt

Buttermilk acts in a similar way to the sugar.

Buttermilk is acidic and contains a lot of lactic acid which is used in many facial peels. It acts like an astringent to tone and tighten skin and pores and can even fade sunspots and freckles if used regularly.

If you don't have buttermilk or yogurt, you can make your own by mixing regular milk with some lemon juice, which will react and curdle the milk.

Mix sparingly and gently

Try not to mix more than necessary to avoid "melting" the sugar before it gets a chance to be on your skin.

When you are finished your homemade facial scrub should look something like this. Scrub you entire face gently for about 30 seconds and rinse with warm water. Pat dry.

Cover the container with the facial scrub

Store in a cool place

You mask can be stored for 24 hrs if it is covered and put in a cool place such as your refrigerator.

Remember, treat the mask as you would a bottle of opened buttermilk. The milk is the ingredient that will spoil first so don't keep the mask hanging around for too long. Use it right away or toss it after 1 day.

What an easy and, I'm sure very effective, exfoliating facial. I suppose you could add a drop of oil for scent if you wanted. Thanks for the great recipe!

I usually avoid DIY skin products because, quite frankly, I'm lazy and would rather just buy one in the store. But this is super easy and can be made with ingredients I almost always have on hand. Excellent idea. Voted up.

As with any exfoliating facial, you shouldn't use it more than once every 2 days (so 3 times a week) so you don't risk your skin drying out.

How often could you use this facial? Daily or around three times a week?
