How To Grow Long, Luscious Hair

I don't claim to be an expert on hair, but since my own hair measures about 5 feet in length, I do know a few things about growing hair from personal experience.

I hope that you aren't expecting some miracle solution that will help you grow ten inches of hair in a month. Unfortunately, growing hair takes time and lots of patience. If you hear someone claim that they can do it otherwise, I'd be very cautious before taking their advice. However, there are several things that you can do to obtain healthy hair and speed up the growing process - if you're willing to pay the price.

My lovely sister.
My lovely sister.

You may have noticed that women from the same family often have the same hair growth patterns. If you should see a woman that grows hair well, the chances are that the other women in her family grow hair well too. The same is true for women who cannot grow hair well. This is because heredity many times plays a big role in how our hair grows. In fact, my sister has extremely long hair and has written an article with pictures that describes her long hair journey. You can check it out here.

You may be saying, "My family members just aren't hair growers, so I'm stuck, right?" Not necessarily. Many times family traits are inherited because nutritional habits are also passed down. Nutritional deficiencies can be inherited just the same as hair color. The good news is the cycle can be broken, but it takes patience. With proper nutrition, deficiencies can almost always be reversed, but sometimes it takes several months or even years to completely reverse.

Curly hair is beautiful in it's own way whether long or short.
Curly hair is beautiful in it's own way whether long or short.

If you have very curly hair, you may have a hard time growing it long. Curly hair rarely grows long, however, it's certainly not impossible. Curly hair is beautiful in its own way, whether it's long or short. That is, as long as it stays healthy!

There are several health situations that can keep your hair from looking its best. Thyroid problems, gastrointestinal issues, and even hormone imbalances. If you don't notice at least some improvement in your hair's quality after several months, you may consider an underlying health problem.

Thankfully, modern science has made it possible to get proper nutrition very easily without having to eat several pounds of the foods that contain the nutrients we need. This is through nutritional supplements. Even when taking nutritional supplements, make sure that you're getting ones of a good quality, or they just won't benefit. Make sure the supplement manufacturer has a reputation for good quality.

Even if you don't have a deficiency, proper nutrition and supplements can be used to boost you hair's growth rate. If you're wanting to add foods to your diet that will help hair growth here are a few you may want to try:

Barley: This nutritional grain is good for a number of things, but it's high content of niacin, a B vitamin, is essential for healthy hair.

High protein foods: Without enough protein, hair is forced into the resting phase, and is shed prematurely. Try adding more lean meats, beans or lentils to your diet. Protein is composed of the amino acids necessary to grow new cells - including hair. (Have you ever noticed how beautiful a Hispanic woman's hair is? It's because of the high protein from the beans in their diet).

Avocados, nuts and seeds: These contain high vitamin E, necessary for healthy hair.

Raw oats and bean sprouts: These contain silica, a very important mineral that is a must for growing healthy hair.

Sufficient fat: Many people automatically turn their noses up when fat is mentioned, but certain amounts of fats are necessary for health in general and for healthy hair. The key is finding the right kinds of fats. EFAs (essential fatty acids) found in foods such as fish, and pumpkin, are extremely important for healthy hair. Also, find a good balance from other plant and animal sources.

Here's a list of the supplements that will help you grow great hair:

VITAMINS: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Biotin, Inositol, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12.

MINERALS: Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Iodine, Selenium, Copper, Silica, Zinc, Sulfur, Chromium

HERBS: Sage, Chamomile, Catnip, Burdock Root, Horsetail

Get great vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements at local health food and/or drug stores, mail order catalogs or over the internet such as on eBay.

Here's Some Hair Tips That I Use:

  • Never brush hair when wet. This stretches the hair and makes it brittle.
  • Be patient when combing out snarls, use your fingers to break loose tough ones.
  • Shampoo the scalp well and the ends lightly. The scalp gets more oil, and the ends dry easily.
  • Shampoo less often. 3 or 4 times a week should be sufficient. This will keep from stripping your hair's natural oils.
  • Shampoo gently. Spread shampoo gently down the length of hair; don't massage and tangle.
  • Don't over-brush. Brushing too often causes breakage. Try using a high quality boar bristle brush; it'll be worth paying a little more for a good one.
  • Pin up or braid. Whenever you sleep or do housework, pin up or braid your hair to reduce breakage.
  • Use LOTS of conditioner, especially on the ends. Rinse thoroughly with cool water. For extra benefit, let set a minute of two before rinsing.
  • Deep condition occasionally by putting a thick layer of conditioner on hair then covering with a thermal shower cap. Blast with a hair dryer a few times, then let set. Rinse with cool water.

Thank you for the tips. My sister actually has gorgeous flowing long blond hair and just 2 years ago I did as well, but on a hot summer day I decided to chop it off into a bob. Which, I loved, but now miss my long blond hair.

I definitely know there are no miracles supplements. Thank you for your tips, I think I'll find them most helpful and will definitely be trying them. I've recently gotten on a major health kick, so I'll use some of the food tips within my diet and I think, other than that, your biggest tip is to take good care of the hair you have, which I will most definitely attempt to do.

Thank you again for the advice. I'm in this for the long haul. My hair does tend to grow a little faster than others. I chopped my hair off at the beginning of August and it was at my chin, now the front is only a half and inch from my shoulder and the back that was stacked is about 2 inches, so I think if I focus my energy into taking care of the hair I have, then I can keep myself from getting impatient and chopping it back off.

I do have one other question. I'm not sure of your hair type, but my hair is naturally very straight and while I have a very thick head of hair, my strands are actually very fine. Do you recommend any specific shampoo that can help keep it well mosturized and healthy withou weighing it down?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 9 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Well, I too have very straight hair which is pretty thick near my scalp.  But as you can imagine, after it goes down 4 feet it tends to thin some, but thankfully, it still is thick enough that you can't really tell it.  As for the shampoo, you'll probably laugh,  but I use Suave 2 in 1 Smoothers for KIDS!  (It has to be Smoothers). It cleans my hair effectively without drying it out.  The conditioner that I just love and that I get great results from is Dove.   It has weightless moisturizers and it leaves my hair feeling like silk, and don't weigh it down.  I buy the economy size and absolutely cake it on.  It rinses real clean no matter how much you put on.  Also, if your hair already tends to grow fast, I'd imagine that you'd really get great and fast results from HSN-W (Hair, Skin, and Nails formula) from Nature's Sunshine.  (You'll have to type in HSN-W into the Nature's Sunshine search box because my link didn't work right). It's the link above that says, " Here's probably the closest thing you'll find to a miracle in a bottle."  This link is for convenience only, I will not make anything for selling it.

Hi, blessedmommy. I've been wanting to make my hair soft, shiny, and straight again. :-) Would you recommend do-it-yourself-at-home hair spa treatments? If so, how do I choose which product is best for my type of hair?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Hi Susan!  Obviously, I would need to know more about your hair type to be precise, but I will give you a few pointers.  If your hair craves mouisture, use hot oil treatments once or twice a week and deep condition at least once a week on top of your regular conditioning.  (See directions above on deep conditioning).  If your hair just seems dull and lifeless you may need to really take your supplements religiously.  Also, this may sound gross, but it's very effective and healthy regardles of your hair type and after just a few applications you may start to notice a huge difference... a mayonnaise and egg treatment is very beneficial.  Take freshly washed hair and apply mayonnaise mixed with an egg.  Use about twice as much mayonnaise as you would on your normal conditioning.  Cover with a disposable shower cap and let set for about an hour.  After setting, rinse thoroughly and completely.  Now wash a couple of times with a mild two-in-one shampoo/conditioner.  Let dry naturally and don't brush until almost completely dry.

Susan Ng profile image

Susan Ng 8 years ago from Cebu, Philippines

Duh! *slapping my forehead* I'd completely forgotten about that mayonnaise and egg treatment! Someone told me about that a loooong time ago! :p Thanks! :-)

By the way, do the mayonnaise and eggs have to be room temperature? 'Cause I keep them in the fridge. :-o

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

They don't have to be room temperature, Susan, but penetration is usually improved by warmer temperatures.  Just spoon out what you will be using and let it set out on the cabinet for awhile. Hope it helps!!!

My hair only grows to a certain length do I take all of those vitamins at the same time to make my hair grow? Iwant log hair so bad that I was wondering can they give me some type of shot in my head to make it grow. It's got to be something in this world that can do that I just need to know what.

blessedmommy profile image

Kina: LOL I don't know about a shot in the head but there are some very practical thngs that you can do that may bring you success. Try a nightly scalp massage for about 10 minutes. Follow the tips above and check out my other article for hair growing tips.

Remember that growing long hair takes patience and persistence.

Happy hair growing!

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Mary:  I hope that you decide against cutting your hair.  There are supplements that you can take to thicken it up.  (See above).  It definitely won't happen overnight, but it can be done.  Meanwhile wear it up in pretty twists to keep it from breaking. Be very careful when brushing and never brush it while it's wet.  These things keep your hair thin.  Braid it into braids while you sleep.  I know that you said your hair is too long to wear up but my hair is probably as long as yours and I wear it up almost all the time in the summer.  My sister has hair that is about five feet long and she wears hers up often as well. (And hers is extremely thick). Please check out her article of pretty ways to wear your hair up by clicking here.

WOW how did you do that? how long did it take you? anyway plz help me i would like it to grow 4cm in the next 3-4 months. is that long enough?

ericka=] 8 years ago

I had long hair but then i cut it short and i NEED it to grow!! I'm 13 and i have thyroid so my hair sometimes fall and i have thin hair!! So can you please give me some tips on how to grow healthy and thicker hair!! THANK YOU =]

ericka =]

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Erika: First, the herb kelp will feed your thyroid and provide many necessary minerals. You can also go to a health food store and buy supplement combinations for your thyroid. Your hair may not grow properly if your thyroid isn't functioning right and if you are not getting good nutrition. An herb called horsetail will be great for growing hair and nails. Also, buy some evelopes of unflavored gelatin and mix it with water or buy it in capsules if you don't want to drink it. (MAKE SURE to check with your parents and doctor before taking any supplements to make sure it's ok). Meanwhile, just take extra care to not overbrush and style as this breaks your hair and make sure it is well conditioned.

hi am 14 and some boy at school cut half of my hair! it was soooo long but now its just bellow my ears! i always cry about and i want to know how long can i grow it 2 weeks or a mounth (if you can) thanks so much

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Talia: It takes times and patience to grow hair.  I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but if you just take real good care of it and follow the advice above, your hair will be back before you know it.

Oh...and stay away from that boy at school ;)  LOL

blessedmommy does your hair grow as fast as your nails? i heard this somewhere but i don't think it's true because i think my hair grows kind of fast, but it's winter so my nails aren't growing fast. does this mean my hair isn't growing fast either?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Caitibug: This is evidently a myth because I have never been able to grow long fingernails but I can grow long hair. It is true, however, that many of the supplements that you take to grow hair also helps you grow fingernails.

caitibug 8 years ago

how can i get hair that is thick on the head, but thins out a tad bit at the ends... something like selena gomez's hair?? is there a special way to wash your hair and part it to make it like that?? if there is could you tell me?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Caitibug: Not sure what you mean....When hair is uncut and pretty long it naturally gets thinner as it goes down. In the case of Selena Gomez, I think she has her hair professionally styled and cut to lay the way it does.

selenagomez123 8 years ago

Caitibug: I know what you mean about Selena Gomez's hair. If you want your hair to be styled like hers, keep reading. Next time you go to your hair-cut place, ask if the stylist can give you lots of layers. That's all. But keep in mind, you might need to get your hair cut a bit more often than once every 5 months after you get the layers, so your hair won't look ragged. Your hair will look nice whether the length is long like Selena's or short like mine. You won't have to blow dry it every morning to make it look suitable for public, even thought the styling makes it BEAUTIFUL! It is a really cute style, though (my hair has it too). I hope I could help. :)

Lots of great tips on growing hair long! Long hair is a lot to take care of, but well worth it!

LondonGirl profile image

LondonGirl 8 years ago from London

Great hub! My hair isn't nearly as long as yours (waist length) but washing it 3-4 times a week sounds too much to me. I wash mine perhaps 3 times a fortnight, and that's fine.

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

LondonGirl: When you don't use styling products, such as hairspray, you can go a lot longer without washing your hair. Also, when you wear your hair up you can go a lot longer. But if you wear it down all the time and use styling products it is good to wash it 3-4 times a week (especially to condition it). I wear my hair up pretty often so I don't have to wash it as much as that either.

LondonGirl profile image

LondonGirl 8 years ago from London

I never use hairspray, mousse, etc. Nor do I use a hair dryer. I reckon hair looks best when it is healthy and naturally shiny, and using those types of things dulls the hair.

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Good for you, LondonGirl! I never use hair dryers either. I use hairspray occasionally when I wear my hair up so that my baby hair don't go everywhere but that's it. My hair is also very naturally shiny.

Thanks for sharing your tips!

I agree with the Hair skin and nail vitamins. My friend started using them and she came home with shoulder lenth hair from florida. I saw her a month later and her hair was a good four inches below her shoulder. I have known her for years and i know her hair does not grow fast so i was like wow! I am going to have to try those

hey blessedmommy, i just wanted to know. you say you should wash your hair abround 3 or 4 times a week, but i'm 16 and my hair gets greasy and nasty a lot. my hair is about 2cm pst my shoulders and i have to wash it EVERY night of it looks like iv'e dipped my head in the chip pan, i know its ''stripping my hair of natural oils'' and all and i want ot know will this make a huge difference to growing my hair?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 7 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

MishaLeight: If you have very oily hair or you use a lot of styling products, it may be necessary to wash your hair more often - maybe even every night. The best thing to do would be to limit the styling products and to wear your hair twisted up once in awhile, but if you're not ready to give up your style, then just be sure to wash with a mild shampoo and condition every time you wash. You may also want to do deep conditioning once or twice a month.

I used to have oily hair when I was younger and I found that using regular dishwashing soap followed by a good condition would get rid of lots of excess buildup and make my hair very soft and healthy. Just make sure that you don't do this more than once a month or so.

I love the information you have given for growing hair. It is good info. I have long hair, I cu off 16 inches in the last year due to it being so thin on the ends. So I am working on getting it thicker, I still have tailbone length hair. I use a mix of oils that I make up based loosely on the Scottish experiment on using oils to increase growth. It does help, I feel more relaxed afterwards too. I will be back for more great info.

It's so good to see good nutrition being promoted for having healthy hair. Hair and nails can tell us a lot about our body's general health. Getting sufficient fruit and vegetables, the good oils and whole grains is usually not a priority for teenagers. If you can reach them through vanity, great!

One warning about kelp. Most are just dry seaweed. If you take sufficient amounts to be effective as a nutrient, you will be getting too much iodine and can harm the thyroid gland, actually stop it from functioning. Recently I researched kelp products and found only one, "Doctor's Best FibroBoost", which is tested for iodine content. It contains Seanol, Ecklonia cava extract, and only 13.3 micrograms per 400 mg capsule. Taking the recommended dosage of 3 capsules will still give you well below the RDA for iodine, even if you are taking a multivitamin. I don't have anything to do with this company. It was so difficult to find a product without too much iodine, I just want to let you know.

One more recommendation for reducing hair damage. Don't wear tight ponytails or other styles that puts constant pulling on the hair. This causes so much stress that the hair falls out before it usually would.

jadine 7 years ago

this information is very helpfu may i suggest that you also improve your fitness with more exercise to build sweat, sweating helps the hair grow! also boar bristle brush your hair research it on google and find out why this helps!

I absolutley need to brush my hair when it's wet, because I leave the house before it has time to dry, and I already get up at 5:50 in the morning. Is it possible for me to continue doing this, but with a way to cause less damage? blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 7 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

moobug234: I know this isn't what you want me to say but brushing your hair while wet is probably the very thing keeping your locks from growing. You may need to come up with an alternative such as washing the night before or just get up earlier.

As far as the shampoo and conditioner it may make your hair healthier but I still say that the consistency of taking good care of your hair over the long term will be your best bet. Growing long, beautiful hair just don't happen overnight. If there was a miracle in a shampoo bottle I'm thinking that there would be a whole lot more people walking around with long hair. It won't hurt to use the product and you may even find that it will improve your hair's texture, but your best bet is a whole lot of patience. Thanks for the comments!

I have started seeing my hair grow since the last time i had to cut it, however my job requires my hair to be up. so ever day 5 times a week a need to put my hair up. what are some tricks to stop breakage. or tricks in putting in it up to reduce damage?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 7 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Nicky...Putting your hair up actually promotes hair growth because it "stops" breakage! (I wear mine up almost all the time at home). When your hair is all bound up together it reduces the chance of it breaking off. It's kind of like when you have a single strand of thread it's easy to break but if you bind together about 60 strands it's very hard to break. It's the same way with hair. However, the way you put it up may damage it if you aren't careful. Don't use excessive bobby pins and make sure bobby pins are rubber coated at the tips. The way I do is just twist mine up in a layered roll and hold it with jaw clamps. Another really good option is to braid your hair first and then pin up your braid. Hope this helps!

Hi Blessdmommy, I have been sitting under my hairdryer with a shower cap and 1 whisked egg applied to my hair for nearly 1hr now reading your hub which I have found most interesting and educational. I am an Afro Chick and my background is Jamaican. I have been using hair extensions (weave) in my hair for 6 years now as I hate my hair being short. On a number of occasions I have tried to wear my hair natural but don't feel short hair suits my face shape so I revert back to extensions which I know is no good for my hair but looks and makes me feel Grrrrreat!. My hair as a child was a lot thicker and longer but since I abused it with hair gel and slicked back styles ect, my hair became short brittle fine and weak and my hair line is thinning with some hair loss, so this was the reason for me hiding under weaved styles. Anyway as of lately I have been focusing on my health and fitness and last night decided to remove my hair extensions in order to start my hair growth plan which I am keeping a picture and video diary of. so I plan to stay away from hair weave!!! I plan to wash my hair once a week using a Avalon Organics Volumizing Shampoo, Rosemary which is enriched with Wheat Protein + Vitamin E, Panthenol & Arginine. I then plan to use the egg treatment once a week I did not add the mayonnaise though is this needed or can I use the egg on it's own? I do like the sound of the mayo & avocado treatment also so may wash hair twice a week to incl this treatment. Then use Castor Oil with drops of Rosemary oil to lotion my hair. I need to find some braided styles to start the process. Anyhow the only problem I might face is when it's time to get dressed up in my gladrags! I was thinking of buying a wig to wear on those nights out with friends until my hair quality improves HMMMMM what do you think?

So Blessedmommy I know your not of Afro origin and our hair challenges are different but I thought I would share with you my story I'd best go rinse the egg out now not forgetting to use cool water as I normally would use hot! Thank you for your tips and advice I will keep you updated with my hair growth...lets see how long I can stay away from

hello blessedmommy!!!

your tips are quite similar 2 the ones on profrssional websites so you r obviously correct (i guess LOL)

but does straght ironing my hair cause damage or is it ok??!!

kim 6 years ago

Hello, thanks for all great tips, herbs, and mineral and vitamin supplements. I have a medium amount of thickness to my hair and the texture of my hair is very fine, but it tends to curl easily with a little gel, applied when wet. Naturally, it has wave to it. I am 35, and I notice when my hair was longer, it was not as full as in my mid-late 20's. Wondered if this occurs w/age (I heard it can). Now I recently chopped it into a bob, and I want to grow it long and healthy again.

I currently take a B-vitamin complex, multi-vitamin, silica, Beta-carotene, vit d, zinc, & c. Wondered if vitamins you mentioned are OK to take as supplements in addition to your daily much of one vitamin is harmful, etc. Also, do have any advice on growing hair faster, or is it matter of patience?

Thanks in advance, u can reply to:, or here.

my hair grows very slow and its very thick i hate that is there anyway u can help me ??????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

heather 6 years ago

My hair won't grow. I haven't cut it in two and a half years, i used to straighten and dye it a lot and it never got longer. Now I stopped straightening and dying it but it's damaged. I just got an inch trimmed off to get rid of the split ends, but i still find some split ends and some parts are dried out and damaged. I don't know what to do now. Everyone says the only way to get your hair to grow is to get rid off all the split ends and damaged parts, but in order to do that, I would have to shave my head and start all over and I really do not want to do that, I don't want to get any more cut off it's already so short.

What should I do? Do I have to shave my head? is there any other option?

sorinna 6 years ago

hi my hair was to my butt then i cut it to shoulder length and i want it to grow back wat should i dooo?

debs :X xxx 6 years ago

as for both of you to - trim your hair every month . Wash it Monday,Thursday,Sunday NO MORE !!! AND DON'T THINK ABOUT YOUR HAIR , GET A NEW HOBBIE . I have hair 1 inch below my shoulders , but DON'T think about it x

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 6 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

debs: Why trim off the progress of growth? Trimming hair will not help it to grow; that is a grows from the roots. The key is keeping the hair (especially the ends that are prone to splitting) very well conditioned. My hair is to the back of my knees and hasn't been as much as trimmed an inch in over 20 years.

This is a great hub! You shared things about growing long hair I haven't seen or heard before. I did think as you said, some people are born to have long hair, it's in their genes:) Great Job!

marie 6 years ago

I have waist length hair, I never use heat and 90% of the time its in a bun, but I do get highlights roots only 2x a year. What helps with me is only washing 2-3 times a week, only using sulfate free shampoo on scalp only, and conditioner from ears down. I sometimes do not wash the conditioner out and bun my hair and leave it in until the next wash. Macadamia oil is an excellent product too, well worth the money.

I also have hypothyroidism and am on thyroxine, you need to to take the meds on an empty stomach with a glass of water and not eat anything for the next hour (I am also an RN) this will allow proper absorption into the body, I grow just over half inch a month, my hair is still thin but is thickening up, MSM also helps with thickening the hair and helping it grow.

Gina 6 years ago

After reading ur article I def plan to try what I can.... But is it pointless for me? Thin hair does run in my fam, and I have super fine curly hair! I can get length but not healthy. It falls out by the handfuls, I feel I eat fairly healthy, only shampoo every other day or so, and cake on frizz serum conditioner and let it sit for 5-10 min and only rinse 90% out also deep condition every 2-3wks... I'm s.o.l. arnt I?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 6 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Gina, Try taking horsetail herb and/or hair vitamins religiously. You may just be deficient on key nutrients that strengthen hair. The fact that it runs in your family may show inherited deficiency. Give it at least six months to start noticing improvement. Remember, you are trying to restore your body with needed nutrients so you MUST be consistent!

thinhair 6 years ago

I have really thin hair and im like thirteen

conditioner is really bad for you ive heard cos it has chemicals that damige yur hair so its okay once a week or soo... what should i do to make my hair thiker cos my mum has thin hair and my dads bald!

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 6 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

thinhair: I don't know where you heard that conditioner is bad for your hair but I'm afraid that you've been terribly misinformed. The truth is conditioner of some type is a must if you want to grow long and strong and "thick" hair. If your family doesn't use it this could be why your hair is so thin. When hair is not conditioned properly it becomes dull, lifeless and brittle.

If you are not wanting to use a conditioner with chemicals there are other more natural ways to condition the hair. Apply mayonnaise and eggs and let set for 20-60 minutes and then wash thoroughly with shampoo. Also, coconut oil at the roots and ends may be beneficial.

I have hair problems over 3 years already and don't know how to fix it! My hair is falling a part and literally im not talking about 5-10 single hair a day..

I did try rogaine agree doesn't work as good as they advertise tried for 3 month no results no effect "nothing" and other chinese herbal seems to be BS..

Im from CANADA and a lot of products are prohibited here.. If product can not pass customs most likely its not original.

If there is any one else who tried lida hair restoration please advise, let me know further results!

I really want to try something that is working..

Thanks Lucy.

Also somebody told em that emu oil in shampoo and conditioner can help thicken hair is this true? I am desperate to try anything, also can I take the vitamins etc with blood pressure medication, is it safe?

Hey, sorry this might be a little long LOL.

Ok, so i am 13 and in October i got a brazilian keratin treatment(i believe that is what its called) it straightens your hair for 4 months.

Its been around 3 months now and i am pretty sick of my straight hair, i miss my curly red hair.

Any tips on removing this treatment or speeding up the process?

Question two: haha, so since i was in like 2nd grade i have kept getting my hair cut to a short bobish haircut, but i really want to like make a change and grow it long, right now it is about probably 1/2-1 in past my shoulder, how can i speed up the process, like any certain way to wash hair?

Thanks, just tell me any tips if you have any, thank you so much

My hair got cut a lot when i went to the salon to get it trimmed. IDK if it was cause i had a lot of damage or she just didn't know i was trying to grow my hair. its in a weave now, idk if that's good or bad and idk how much my hair has actually grown it been a month but i have been doing whatever i can to make it grow. Idk why my hair hasn't been growing that much, well it as but i guess its falling out. its to my neck after i got it cut but i didn't get to see it that much cause after i got it cut my sister put a weave in it as soon as we got home. before it was on my back kinda but it wasn't very long. also my hair was curled when i got it cut so i don't know the exact legnth. when i was little i let my bunny out then i coudnt find it so i just left it out and went to sleep then it hopped onto the bed and it kept on eating my hair :(. But im still kind little now though

I've been growing my hair out for about 3 years. It's in the middle of my back, and I always wear it up in a braid. It's in pretty good shape, but the ends are still permed from when I started growing it. I pick it out after I wash it, and then comb it into curls with a fine comb. I let it just dry, and then back up in a braid. I wash it (only) a couple of times a week. So far, so good, but I've got a l-o-n-g way to go. Thanks for all the great advice. You're my hero! If it wasn't for you, I'd probably still be getting monthly cuts and wondering why I had short hair.

giubbotti moncler speeded up the growth in several Olympic games. Because of the special designs, outlet moncler was noticed by the official supporters of the 10th French national Olympic held in Grenoble in 1968. Then monclear was the rooster design trademark of France’s logo in next many years. In the winter games, moncler women proved themselves to be excellently suitable for skiing. Their designs of the monclear outlet were not too thick for athletes in the skiing but make the muscles to keep warm for each movement. Thus giubotti created the first skiing windbreak and clothing. It was named “Nepal”, because there are two waterproof cortical shoulder pads for the skiers to put in his shoulder Cornwall equipment rentals. After these, moncler giubbotti saw the potential great success in winter jacket. In moncler jackets women series, moncler branson are worth of being introduced to us with outstanding characters.

I just wanted to note that one thing that has REALLY helped my hairs health is installing shower head filters. There was a noticeable difference in my hair and skin's health immediately! That being said, I have LA city water, and live in an older building that probably has pretty icky pipes, so this might only help people who don't have great shower water. I didn't realize they even MADE shower head filters until just recently, but it is the best investment in my health I've made! I installed a KDF type filter first, and then a Vitamin C filter below it, then my shower head. The KDF filter is sort of like a Brita filter except they are capable of handling the water volume and temperature (this is key!!! normal faucet filters cannot effectively filter warm/hot water!), and the Vitamin C filter removes and leftover chlorine or chloramine in the water. Vitamin C is also good for your skin and hair, anyway. My lungs are also a lot clearer after showering, as I'm no longer inhaling aerosolized chlorine, so this my be helpful for those of you who also have sensitive lungs. Just a thought!

This post offers a great deal of advice. As a kid my hair never grew past my neck. A couple months ago my hair reached 1/4" below my bra strap. Unfortunately I had to cut it up to above my shoulders due to the terrible split ends. I want my hair to grow back much faster than it is. I've always wanted to have long, flowing hair ever since I was 4. I'm doing everything I can think of. Please note that I come from a family of all types of hair and all lengths. So my question is, does this mean that some of us are nutrient deficient? I take all kinds of herbs and supplements and I just started using Mega-Tek (which is designed for horses but safe for human use). I know it has a great deal of protein in it and you must be careful about protein overload (which I am). However my hair seems to "love" protein and I counteract it with moisture. I'm in several hair challenges at work and on some of the hair boards. I want so bad to win. My hair grows anywhere from 1/8" - 1" per month. Why is this? Also I recently did a Global Brazilian Hair Treatment (2nd time) and my hair likes (not "loves") it. I'm also taking the Sacred Eden vitamins but not noticing any extra growth. I spent a lot of money on those-several months supply and still have some left!! I massage my hair for at least 5 minutes EVERY night and drink at least 2 litres of water per day. I only wash my hair once per week and do a deep conditioning at least once per month. I've been drinking protein shakes every other day. I'm a trooper, but I'm also very impatient and I hate to lose. Please offer me any advice that you might have other than what I'm already doing. Oh and I go for a 1/2 hour walk each evening for exercise. Is there any hormone injections that you know of or anything else that might speed up the progress of hair growth (from the scalp that is) :) Thanks in advance!

i am 14 i used to have nice thickish hair. my friends then made me realise that my hair looks thinner and now i cant stop thinking about it!!!!!! i don't care about length because my hair is by my waist i know that it thins out a bit towards the ends but this seems like a lot! also i want to know how to keep from getting split ends and keeping them nice. my friends go on at me because i wash my hair allll the time once a day and they say it strips the oils from you hair and yess i know it does but i cant stand not washing it i wash it less in winter but in summer i swim everyday in the pool and i figure washing it everyday is better then leaving chlorine in!?!?!?!

As a child i had very thick hair. When i wuz 12 i got short layers and then it became a little thin but it wuz still thick. and then i did it again in april and it wuz okay. but after school reopened again i wuz pretty sick for a month and had to take antibiotics and steriods for my asthma for some time. after that it got a bit thin and then i cut it again. so each time its short its fine but when it starts to get long i tend to play with my hair a lot so i don't know if that's also the problem. so where can i get these herbs? and i also have mild to moderate ezcema so will these herbs also help with ezcema or just the hair?

Jessygirl 5 years ago

I've always wanted long hair. But my hair has always been shoulder length or less. Mostly because I always end up cutting it or getting layers.

So I decided I wanted to grow my hair out. I have naturally curly hair, so I grew out all my layers and it got a few inches past my shoulders. I loved it! But, I still wanted long hair. So I went in for a trim and the lady cut it up past my shoulders:'(

I got fed up so I bought extensions.

Is this going to damage my hair so it wont grow as fast, or grow at all? They are clip in and I've only had them for a week or so.

Crystal 5 years ago

Lotsa useful information here... after reading a lot of tips 'n' such, I've still had no luck. Here's my issue...

I am 30 yr old, Caucasian. I have ALWAYS had very thin, oily hair, to the point of having to wash it every day.

It has a natural wave to it that I do not like which in turn forces me to blow dry it straight & occasionally straighten it (maybe only once or twice a wk). My hair also breaks very easily, even when trying to be gentle with it weather it's wet or dry. I also try to wear my hair up when I can but pretty much all hair ties cause more breakage. Even worse, it's at this shoulder length where my clothes rub up against the ends. I have tried hair, skin & nails vitamins, various shampoos & conditioners, oils (which tend to make my hair MORE oily, even when added while my hair is damp after the shower). I also pretty much have to shampoo every day (b/c my hair is so oily) and I try to use a rich conditioner on JUST the ends, followed by a leave-in conditioner but I still have frayed ends that tend to get worse 2-3 hrs into the day due to humidity. I am just beyond frustrated!!!

I've been reading a lot about shampoos, conditioners, vitamins & other treatments but still have no idea what to do. Any guidance would be appreciated! Thanks!

It's me again. I posted 6 weeks ago and still haven't received any advice/suggestions/response(s) from the OP! There's been quite a few questions, yet no answers. Has the original poster gone on vacation or simply gave up on this website? I took a great deal of time and effort to ask questions and would appreciate some common courtesy!!!

Thanks for the tips, I already had quite long hair, just past the mid back area, but I was concerned about maintaining it- having healthy hair and all that. I use to wash my hair every night and always combed it while it was still wet. Due to your advice I've stopped washing it every night and combing it whilst wet and now my hair grows soo fast, and I lose less hairs every time I brush, it just seems nicer too its less dry and a lot shinier.

ravenmickey 5 years ago

thank you so much "blessedmommy" for the very informative hub. my hair was long last year but when my stylist retouched my highlights she used too much bleach making all my hair eventually fall out over time. prior to my hair falling out it had been growing very fast and was to the middle of my back in long layers. in order to make my hair even i had to cut it neck legnth. it's been almost a year since i've cut my hair and its only grown 2 inches total!

the texture of my hair is medium coarse (i'm a black hispanic) so i wash and treat my hair once a week with a hair oil and try to use the curling iron sparingly. something i notice is that my eating habits have changed since i've had long hair (i use to eat fish 3-5 times a week) as oppose to now where i eat fish seldomly (due to now living with boyfriend who doesn't eat fish at all). maybe this is part of the reason why my hair is growing back so slow or is this all in my head?

Hey girl. I am 1/4th black, and I've been told because of that it's hard to grow hair? I have no idea if that's true or not. ( I hope not! ) Up to 6th grade, I had long, gorgeous, curly hair that I, along with everyone else loved. But the summer before 7th grade, I had it cut to look like Selena Gomez. -___- DUMB, I know, but ever since then, it's not growing as fast as I want it. I've read literally hundreds of tips. I'm just now starting to do them, and take viitimans for it. I was wondering if you have any tips that could help me? Thank you very much ! And I must say, your sisters hair is gorgeouuuus!

J.C. 5 years ago

My hair has always been on the thin side. Thank God I have curls that kind of hide how thin it it, but even with the curls, I still feel my hair is "see through." I've recently resorted to wearing lace front wigs in an effort to have the hair I've always wanted. I've often been very much into health and fitness and eat a proper diet with high protein, however it doesn't seem to do anything for my hair or nails which are just plain aweful. I had my thyroid tested thinking I may have an issue since both my mom and my aunt have irregular thyroids (one hype and one hyper). My doctor confirmed that mine is operating as normal and I am healthy. I recently bought a hair oil "Doo Gro, Mega Thick Growth Oil" which seems to be helping a little bit, or maybe it's my imagination. I also bought a box of Knox gelatin, which I haven't started yet. I am not sure if I should smear it around in my hair or ingest it. I also bought prenatal vitamins which I am afraid to take since I already take a daily multivitamin with fish oil supplements. I instead crushed up the vitamins and put them into my shampoo, which some other hair forum suggested. I am not sure if I am on the right track with all of this... I have never dyed or permed my hair. My hair is pretty much "virgin" hair. I don't use heat styling aids. All I do on a daily basis is spread some leave in conditioner and maybe a bit of curl serum and leave the house. Since I started the wig thing, I don't even really do that. I cover it in a nylon cap and throw the wig on and leave. However, I am worried that the combs in the wig may be damaging my hair... Please help and let me know if I am somewhat on the right track. Also, would you suggest I eat/drink the gelatin or smear it all over my head?

Lori 5 years ago

Hi... great tips!

My hair is like oily twords the top of my head but the rest of my hair is very dry. About 2 years ago I decided to dye my hair blonde (naturally red headed) I had very long, thick, beautiful hair. However, I didn't get my hair dyed professionally and bleached it so many times to try to get the 'bleached' blonde look that it totally killed my hair and I had to get about 6-7 inches chopped off. Now my hair is finally starting to grow again.. but there is getting to be a thin spot in the back of my head (my dermatologist told me its just a calic to not worry about it) But I honestly think it's thinning there, this happened before I dyed it so... I was wondering if the vitamins would help more hair grow in that spot and also if you would recommend me using Biolage hair shampoo and conditioner. Thanks for listening!

My hair is about neck to shoulder length and is filled with layers! I had bangs for the longest time but just recently decided to grow them out. I have layers in my hair that are even shorter than my bangs. The results: messy, untamed, frizzy looking, losing my mind over hair. How do I get through this? Grin and bear it? Any styling tips that wont damage my hair so I can grow it out?

Milla 5 years ago

Hi, I am 16 years old and I recently had a nasty haircut, leaving less than half of my hair just below my shoulders, and the top 3/4 is just past my ears. All I can do is tie it and braid it back, wearing it down it looks ridiculous. My hair is naturally blonde, pin-straight, and thin. I've literally done everything and I want to get out of this! I just got my hair to reach below my shoulders for the first time in my lifetime (my mom liked to keep it real short during my childhood, which I hated.)

I hope that all your tips help me out, I've been trying all kinds of things but my hair is impossibly slow at growing! I always eat healthy and I am taking supplements but nothing is helping speed it up just yet!

Thanks for a few tips I haven't heard about before as well, like shampooing GENTLY.

Is there anything else I should possibly know about?

Hi. I'm a model and I need my hair to be at my waste by september and it's damaged and a little past my shoulders. I was addicted to bleach and I quit bleaching my hair and I take Biotin. I get oil treatments every once in a while. Any advice? I need my hair to grow ASAP! As a model, it's my job to let them damage my hair and use heat, so it's so hard!

Kershnee 4 years ago

Try using olive beats any conditioner and is a natural treatment for your hair. Don't sleep in a tight ponytail...massage in two beaten eggs in your hair, let dry and then shampoo off well...always use a wide toothed comb for your hair. Never blow dry hair when its wet, hair is most fragil;e when it's wet. Try to trim hair a 1/2 inch every three months. I use a leave in conditioner in my hair it's absoultely excellent. It's by Wetline Pro and ccalled 'natural green'. It has horse tail extract, aloe vera and other natural ingredients and helps me grow my hair. I would recommend it to anyone. my hair is very healthy now and is at my mid-back. When my hair is oily, i usually put it up in a ponytail or in a jaw grip and looks that way. I wash my hair twice week. My hair growes quite fast using these methods. Also, when shampooing, massage scalp for about 5 minutes this helps with the blood circulation and helps hair grow. Drinking lots of water is extremenly important since your hair also needs that water to grow. I usually drink about 2 litres or more a day. I hope my comments and suggestions work. Good luck guys with growing your hair.

Being patient is the key to long hair...I have been using tissue oil in my hair for the past month. I noticed over a centimeter in growth..which is quite my hair is noticeably more shiny and glossy and soft. Always massage ur head in circular motions when washing with shampoo. i do not use conditioner since i use the tissue oil and it does not leave any greasy residue which helps me keep my hair cleaner for longer. Hope this helps you

olive oil or tissue oil. massage into ur scalp and tips of the hair. this should work. Also try using horse shampoo, it is supossed to add strength and shine into ur hair. Takin vitamin with biotin in it will help stimulate hair growth while keeeping it shiny and healthy. Hope this works!!!!

Great hub and ideas.

I have also read your sisters hubs and she has an amazing story.

Her hair is beautiful. Like I commented on your sisters hub, today hair just doesn't grow for woman the way it use to (with the few exceptions, your sister being one) we do too much damage today with all the hot techniques out there for our hair.

Colouring and perming does not help either. Back in the bible days the woman had long natural hair due to the environment and of course for the fact they went natural. They had virgin hair.

If you do see a woman with very long hair like your sisters, usually it is hair extensions.

I know coconut oil is good for your hair but for me very expensive. Silica is also good, I now use biotin as it is cheap, however I find it works very slow, too slow. The results wont be out of this world and will start to take effects months and months later, but it helps to some degree.

Bless you

So everyone is saying you should only wash your hair like every three days! I am a swimmer so my hair gets wet everyday and has a lot of chlorine. My hair is still very soft and healthy, semi-thick and mid-back length. So what should I do to try and keep the natural oils in my hair??

I could be wrong however I think pulling your hair by brushing only splits it.
