How to Shape Your Eyebrows and Achieve the Perfect Eyebrow Shape at Home - Tips, Tricks, Tools and Know-How for Women!

Eyebrows are a commonly-overlooked feature of the face, however they can completely determine your look. Some women prefer to have pencil-thin eyebrows, or even draw them on. On the other hand, recent fashion trends show that thick, fuller eyebrows are coming into style. The way in which you shape your eyebrows is completely dependent on the shape and features of your face. Some eyebrow shapes may not suit some women so the key is to work with what you have and experiment.

Guidelines for Shaping Eyebrows

When shaping your eyebrows there are a few simple rules to follow:

1. Eyebrow length:

To determine the length that your eyebrows should be, get a regular old pencil. Hold it up to your face vertically on one side of your nose. This is where the eyebrow should start. Next, hold the pencil diagonally from the bottom of one nostril, and line it up with the corner of your eye. Where the pencil meets your eyebrow is where your eyebrow should end.

2. Eyebrow thickness:

The thickness of eyebrows are determined individually. As previously mentioned, thick eyebrows are now coming back into fashion. To determine what thickness suits your eyebrow, shape your eyebrow using the following steps. If you feel your eyebrows need to be reduced, keep plucking, following the shape. If your eyebrows need to be fuller you may use an eyebrow pencil in a natural colour to create the illusion of fullness until the hair grows back. As a general rule, eyebrows should be thicker in the centre of the face and become thinner towards the outside.

How to Shape Your Eyebrows

1. Get rid of the hair between your eyebrows.

No one likes a monobrow! While the hair here is finer, try your best to remove all of the hair in this area. A depilatory cream may be the best method to remove this hair, however watch out for the definite, straight lines this creates at the beginning of your eyebrows. They may need some additional shaping to achieve a smooth, rounded edge.

2. Pluck the stray hairs from beneath your eyebrows.

Below the main hair of your eyebrows you will find that there grows finer, stray hairs. While these are for the most part invisible, you should pluck these to achieve a clearer and more definite shape.

3. Remove the hair above your eyebrows.

As with the previous step, there are stray hairs above your eyebrows as well, especially toward the end. These are generally thicker and also need to be plucked.

Use a sensitive depilatory cream to remove the bulk of unwanted hair before plucking.

Now you have your basic eyebrow shape! Further plucking may need to be done depending on how you want your eyebrows. You can begin with defining the arch by plucking the hairs underneath it until you reach the desired thickness. Make sure that the end tapers to a fine point and that the beginning of the eyebrow is not too thick for your facial features.

Once again, depilatory creams may be used to do the bulk of this work but additional plucking will still need to be performed. When choosing a depilatory cream, make sure you choose one for sensitive skin that can be used on the face. Always follow the directions on the packet and if irritation occurs wash it off quickly with warm water, but without rubbing.

Use eyebrow tweezers to gently pull the hair out of the skin.

Method of Plucking

It has come to my attention that many women don't actually know the mechanics of how to pluck their eyebrows, so here are a few quick tips.

1. One hair at a time!

While this may sound more painful, attempting to grab hold of, and pull out more than one hair at a time with tweezers can be much more painful in the long run. Also, plucking one by one will allow you to determine the required thickness of your eyebrows without going too far.

2. Gently does it!

Most women latch onto the hair with the tweezers and yank. This too can be more painful than the proper method and resort in breakage, which means that you'll just have to try removing that hair again. Sometimes when the hair breaks off it can become so short that it's virtually impossible to grab it with the tweezers once again. Instead you need to gently pull the hair, rather than tug. This ensures that the entire hair strand is removed.

Use eyebrow brushes to groom your eyebrows.

Once your eyebrows are shaped you may then need to groom them. An eyebrow brush is good for this and can be picked up from your local supermarket. Brush your brows toward the outside of your face.

For extra fullness or definition you might like to try an eyebrow pencil. Select a shade that most closely matches your natural eyebrow colour. To use the pencil, sweet it in the direction of your eyebrow hair using soft, quick, "flicky" strokes.

Some women prefer to go to a beauty salon to get their eyebrows shaped. While this can seem rather cheap at $8 to $15 per session, going to a salon for touch-ups can be rather expensive. If you leave your brows to completely grow back between visits, half the time your eyebrows won't look good. So, if you prefer to have a professional shape your eyebrows for the first time, or if you're trying a new shape, pluck the stray hairs in between visits. This will keep your eyebrows looking neat and tidy and cut down on costs.

The great part about plucking, is eventually you won't have to worry about it anymore. I rarely have to pull out my tweezers for stray eyebrow hairs.

Thanks for your comment, HappyHer. I still find that I have to worry about my stray hairs but hopefully they'll disappear in the future.

Do you know if the hair thins when you do threading as well. I literally just started getting my eye brows threaded and it would be amazing if I didn't have to do it in the future!
