How to do kinky twist

Kinky Twists

What Supplies Do I Need?

Kinky twist can be done with a variety of different types of braid hair. The most popular type of hair used is the synthetic "Marley Braid". This type of hair is made by many different companies and usually cost anywhere from five dollars a bag to ten depending on the quality and store you are purchasing from. If you are getting your hair done by someone it is best to ask them where to get the hair and what type of hair to get. Most braiders will have a preference on the the type of hair to get as well as the exact company to purchase. All hair is not equal so do not mix two different companies hair even if they do both say the same type of hair. It is also important to note that some hair can cause an allergic reaction to occur in certain people. Some indications of an allergic reaction are swelling, bumps, and intense itching on the scalp around the neck or anywhere else the hair touches. The best thing to do if an allergic reaction occurs is to take the hair out. Other types of hair used include but are not limited to Kanekalon, synthetic braid hair, Afro bomb hair, and human hair. In most cases when putting in extensions human hair is the best choice. This is not the case when it comes to kinky twist. Usually it takes about four bags of hair to complete a full head of twists on my head, however I have extra thick hair so the amount that is needed may be different for you. i also suggest getting some kind of beeswax or gel to smooth and seal the ends of your natural hair. My actual preference is the cream beeswax because it seals the ends of the hair better and does not tend to dry my hair out the way gel does. I also suggest getting a satin bonnet to sleep in. The satin bonnet keeps the hair from rubbing against the pillow and causing the hair to look fuzzy or old prematurely. A rat tail comb and at least six hair clips are also needed to complete this style. Shampoo of your choice and an moisturizing conditioner is recommended. Depending on how you want the ends curled extra small perm rods or string will also be needed. All of these items can be found at the local beauty supply store.

How Are Kinky Twist Actually Done?

Kinky twist can be started two different ways. The first way is by braiding the base of the twist to secure the hair to the head and then twisting the remaining hair to complete the twist. The second way is to begin the twist with a twist. This is called double twisting because in order to secure the braid hair to the head it is twisted into the two sections needed to complete the twist, and then the two sections are then twisted to make the twist. There is no need to tie or seal the ends of twist at this point. If done correctly the twist should stay in place until the ends can be curled by boiling the hair thus sealing the twist together. There are different reasons / benefits to start the twist by braiding or twisting. In my opinion starting the hair by twisting  makes the twists look more natural and is less stressful on the hair. Once the technique of twisting is mastered it is usually faster and easier to do. It usually takes anywhere from two and a half hours to half the day to twist a full head. The time it takes depends on how big or small you want the twist, how many people are in your head twisting the hair, and whether or not you are doing the twist yourself or getting them done. If you are getting your hair twisted to have a style while your hair is growing out it is important to make sure that the hair is not twisted / braided too tight. If the hair is twisted / braided too tight breakage can and will most likely occur. Breakage usually is more prominent around the hairline so please keep this in mind when doing your twist. Once you have finished twisting the entire head the process of curling the ends can be started. If spiral curls are wanted on the ends of your twist apply small perm rods on the end of the twists  and dip the hair in boiling water. If you want an more natural look the the ends of the hair should be wrapped and tied with string and then dipped in boiling water. In either instance I would not recommend putting more than three twist together at one time. Trying to put more than three twist together would result in some of the twists not curling correctly and or increasing the chance of you getting burned from the water dripping from the twist. When dipping the hair in the boiling water it is important to have a towel handy to dry the hair once it has come out of the water to prevent getting burned. Once your twist are completed they can last from one to two months.

How Do I Take Care of My Kinky Twist?

Taking care of your twist is fairly easy. Tying the hair up or wearing an satin bonnet at night will aid in keeping the twists looking fresh. keeping the scalp clean is important and can be achieved with an astringent type product like "Sea Breeze" Keeping the hair moisturized can bee achieved by using braid spray. Grease is not recommended for the scalp with this hairstyle due to the fact that the grease can cause the twists to slip. A light oil is the better choice. It is important that you do not keep the twist in your hair for too long.  Keeping the hair in twist for too long can result in your hair dreading up with the twist and also hair loss. Two months is the longest time that I would recommend anyone wearing these twists. When removing the twists expect some shedding. After all the twists are removed it is best to comb through and untangle the hair before washing.

Thanks, I'm thinking of doing my daughters hair twists with shea butter. She's upset because I haven't put a perm in her hair, about a year now. She just have to get over it.

Shea butter is a great alternative to using gel or beeswax. My only recommendation would be to use the whipped shea butter instead of the other and to make sure it is 100% shea butter.

Thank you very much I paid 125.00 to have my daughter get the kinky twist she loved it. I would like to try to do it myself.Someone at work told me if the hair is twisted with synthetic hair it breaks off the real hair. Your opinion is this true and does the twists really grow the hair better than braids? She had it only done 1 and I couldn't realy tell. so I would like to try it again. It looks so nice and pretty. And thank you for the info. That was such a great help. You really explained everything clearly.

@buttercup in my opinion synthetic hair if put in correctly put in will not break off the hair. It is also important to remember that all synthetic hair is not created equally try to find hair that is as close to ours as possible one that when added to our hair does not weigh the hair down. It is the extra weight pulling on the hair as it grows out that can cause the hair to break in addition to the tension placed on the hair when installing the twists. In reference to growth I think that twists can grow your hair better than braids in some cases. This depends on the types of braids you are comparing the twists to. In most cases twists are a safer choice when growing the hair out. Good questions and good luck with your daughter's hair

Shea butter is a great alternative to using gel or beeswax. My only recommendation would be to use the whipped shea butter instead of the other and to make sure it is 100% shea butter. The hair I currently use is eon hair

As a "white girl" I'm about to get the twist and was told to get the Janet Collection but I also want some purple does Janet C. Have purple as well or if not what brand would be close enough to the texture of the Janet C.? And what products would be best for while I'm getting it done and for maintenance? It's been a good ten years since ive had my hair braided so I've forgotten what I used in the past. Any help is greatly appreciated. Your article was absolutely helpful and well informed!

Hai , I started my hair doing braids with kanekelon hair it they turned out perfect.Im now trying to master how to do twists. When i start the twist off with a braid it looks fine , and i keep twisting . My problem is that the twists unravel and look puffy. What am i doing wrong ? help !

brownbush1 4 years ago

Can we get a close up picture of your hair?

jaided 4 years ago from Houston Texas Author

@Samantha the reason your hair gets puffy after you twist it is because you are only twisting thehair once. In order to make this work correctly you have to make sure to twist both the individual strands and the two strands around one another.

I would like to know what kind of human hair would be best to twist my hair with. Also i would like to know do the human hair twisties last and long and the kinky hair twisties? My last question is would it require more hair than i would use for braids with human hair or should i use the human hair blend instead of 100% human hair? If there is anyone out there who cans answer these questions for me i would greatly appreciate it thank you signed lost mary
