How to grow long hair

The question I have been asked continuously, how do you grow such long hair? I will attempt to try to answer to the best of my ability.

Do not cut hair! Your hair grows from the roots, many times cutting hair will pass up the amount of growth. I realize there are some cases of dead ends and some prefer to cut them off. I simply prefer to heavily treat dead ends until they are cured that way my hair grows healthy and has the natural flow instead straight across or even ends looking more natural. The Women's world magazine did a study and discovered it was a myth that cutting hair promoted hair growth. I am not sure all the details on how that's a fact.

The fact I have not cut my hair at all is why it is so long. "I have people tell me I am trying to grow my hair as long as yours," but they are cutting every month and getting disappointed it's not growing. "It's not magic, it's just uncut!" Here are some great ways to enhance your hair growth.

Wash often with GOOD BRANDS ( NO CHEAP ) of shampoo and conditioner! You get what you pay for! Sometimes you might sleep in your conditioner treatment overnight with a conditioning cap. However if you do have a tight budget Suave Professionals (Sleek) or (Moroccan infused) works quite nicely. I have used them myself before. ONLY The Suave Professional, NOT just plain oh Suave!

Extreme dry hair may require further treatment like intensive conditioning or hot oil treatment. You can ask your beauty supply store consultant for suggestions or try plain coconut oil liquefied (AWESOME) (You will most likely need to gently wash out twice) , Aussie 3 minute miracle, various hot oil treatments ect. Olive or Moroccan oil applied to damp hair or ends can be nice; just be careful not to overdue unless you wash it out or it will be too greasy.

You can also try the old-fashioned mayonnaise treatment. Just pack your hair with mayonnaise in a shower cap and leave it for at least 5 hours ( some add eggs for extra luster). I know it sounds gross, but it really works. You may add some lavender oil for a spa relaxing scent to cover bad smell. You may have to wash your hair a few times to get all the mayo out, then condition normal. Your hair will gloss and glisten and look and feel very healthy. (MAKE SURE YOU USE ONLY WARM OR COOL WATER CAUSE HOT WATER WILL COOK THE EGGS(: Ask my daughter lol :D

Moisture rich hair is essential for growing hair! You need to drink plenty of water for internal and hair health!

Brush hair often removing tangles! Use a hair brush that does not rip out your hair! After your hair is mostly dry pull you hair in two sections and brush ALL the tangles out. If you are wearing your hair down and straight, brush your hair often during the day to prevent more tangles from occurring. Tangles thin and shorten hair! Tip: While the conditioner is still in your hair start pulling the tangles apart, makes brushing much easier later, saves hair loss.

Curling hair:We all know that hot curlers and perms are not healthy for hair growth. Perms stunt hair because of the chemicals. However perms are very pretty on long hair so if you get one be sure and have it done by a professional not a home perm. Use lots of conditioners and follow the proper care directions for detangling curls.

Hot curlers should be used minimum while growing hair and maintaining long hair. I love using hot curlers because they are convenient for quick pretty hairstyles, but I have to be careful because they dry and brittle my hair quick. Don't try to comb out hair sprayed curls, it will break your hair off! After you are finished with your curled and sprayed style, wash and fully condition. While conditioner is still in your hair start pulling apart the bunched curls then make a sticky bun while the conditioner is soaking in and you are shaving your legs or washing off, then rinse in warm water. Brush after mostly dry. A hair dryer can be used for a quick start, but I do not recommend for completely drying because it's burns and drys out hair. Natural air drying is another secret to long healthy hair. I like going out on the porch on warm days and letting the wind blow through it with a hairbrush in hand, it's relaxing too.

A way to curl long hair without using heating curlers. Curl the front strips of hair dampened with water or mousse. Put hair in two tight braids dampened with water or mousse and curl the ends. Leave in hair for several hours or over night. For extra curly hair add more braids and curlers. Your hair may resemble a perm, but will be very healthy and beautifully curly. I always get lots of complements with my hair like this. Style as desired with hair barrettes, combs, clips, bobby pins or just hanging natural. I recommend to spray with hairspray to hold all day. TRE Semme extra hold is nice.

Eating Healthy:People that starve themselves usually have thin and brittle hair. People that have once had long hair and it all broke off many times have their diet to blame. You can be thin without starving you and your hair from essential vitamins. Eating protein filled foods are beneficial since your hair is protein. Taking lots of vitamins can really boost hair-growth. Your health-food professionals can give you a list a great products for healthy hair growth. My little secret is prenatal vitamins, even when you are not pregnant. My hair grew 6 inches when I was pregnant with my first child and on prenatal vitamins.

Stress: Stress does cause some occasional hair thinning, hair loss or breakage. For our overall health indeed stress can wreak havoc. So it is wise to keep calm and try to chill out and take life at more of a stride with the help of God. Taking calming herbs helps too. Melatonin at night can relieve you stress from the daytime with a fit less night sleep that will make you more rested for the next day. Plenty of rest is a really big stress buster.

Massaging and Stimulating Scalp: Massaging and stimulating your scalp opens up hair growth follicle's that might be clogged where new growth can occur. I love having someone besides myself do it, it's very relaxing, Even slightly pulling your hair in bunches ( not hard at all ) can be stimulating.

Braid or twist hair up when you sleep. Long hair will tangle badly if it is hanging loose while you sleep. Just braid your hair or twist it on top of your head for safe sleeping for your hair. Braiding is actually proven to promote hair growth so while you are trying to grow your hair, it's a great hairstyle to try.

I hope you have fun growing your long hair. Please check out my journey to long hair!

WoW your hair is amazing, that sure is not something I see around where I live, even in California it seems that all the girls have cut their hair and now where extensions, it is refreshing to see someone who has let their hair grow and stay healthy.

I love your hair! My hair used to be almost that long, and it was super curly. But I had it cut for Locks of Love and I'm growing it out again. Thanks for the info!

Wow I love your hair! I've been trying to grow mine but my annoying mother says that I need to keep trimming the ends to keep it growing, which makes no sense at all, mind you.

Hi this is Rachel Salsman. I have long hair too, and what I've found works real well if someone can't stand the mayo and egg hair treatment is pure olive oil. Leave in over night and wash out the next morning.

Also, if you tease your hair at... all, wash it out, don't comb, pull and tug on it. Then use Aussie Hair insurance spray.

Another thing you can do is always sleep on a silky satiny pillow case. These pillow cases are gentle on hair, hair do's , and also on your facial skin to reduce the wrinkle lines. Proven.

My hair was nearly to my feet till I went to the Phillippines for missions work. It came out by the handfuls due to unbalanced diet and bad humidity and water. Also Humidity is bad on anyone's hair. If it's really humid, try reducing the amount of hair spray you use for your hair do because the humidity/rain will cause the hair spray to mat thus making your hair harder to manage and comb out. As always wash out, don't comb out. The different kinds of hair sprays they have also make a difference. You can always spray some on your hand b/f buying and if it seems really sticky to your skin, it's gonna be really sticky and hard to comb out. If it's more watery or mild feeling to your skin, it will be easier to comb out. When women have loooong hair, they're always looking for easier, more convenient ways to care for it. Also, if you do blow dry your hair at all, use the coolest setting possible, not high heat.

Tips I thought I'd pass along as well.

Your hair looks really nice. I stopped trimming my hair a few years ago as people always take off to much. Oiling sure helps. My hair has growen a lot over this time. I've herd silicone is bad for your hair and am wondering do you use silicone or try to avoid it?

Hi, your hair is very beaautiful. I am quite the opposite. I've always had long hair. When I was ten, it was almost to my waist. Then, I chopped it all off. I'll be 19 in December and my hair is at the middle of my back. I'm looking to get it at my waiste or hips. I think long hair is a very beautiful thing on a woman.

p.s. My sister used hair mayonnaise in my hair when I was younger. I recommend it to anyone looking for long, soft, shiny hair.

Thank you for a very informative article. I'm 54 years old, and my hair is 4 1/2 feet long now. I last cut it in 2003 because I foolishly dyed it black, and didn't want to use color remover. Ie was cut shoulder length then. I do some of the same things you do such as prenatal vitamins, mayonnaise treatments, and super conditioning of the ends. I don't color my hair anymore. I do keep it in a tail bag made for horses' tails during the day, as I work as a school bus driver, and was always sitting on it. The tail bag is great; it keeps the hair from breakage at night as well. My hair should hit the 5 foot milestone here in the next 9 months or so. I can't wait!! BTW, I'm nearly 6 feet tall.(5'11 3/4").

Wow! Thanks for sharing. Your hair sounds awesome, and it is very apparent you take wonderful care of it. Your going to be turning lots of heads.

I nearly typed 'siningmommy' on that other page relating to revival. I'm sure you have the sense of humour to laugh a little at that!

Though I'm a man with short hair, I found it interesting that you reject the idea of trimming growing hair. I thought that 3" of growth over 6 months needed 1/2" trimmed off to stop split ends from developing. I was wrong because photographs on these hub-pages of your healthy hair prove that you are right!

If you wish to grow your hair no longer than ankle length, it would appear that you'll need a trim before very long. I suggest that you ask your husband to perform the task; I'm sure he'll take off as little as possible.

Binaya.Ghimire 5 years ago

I love to grow my hair, but not as long as yours, of course. LOL!

Charlene 5 years ago

Thanks for sharing about the "no trimming" rule. I've been brain-washed to think that you should trim your ends every 4-6 weeks or as often as needed. I've noticed that when I trim my hair it only gets shorter and more even. It's never grown more. It used to appear to grow faster. I just LOVE your site here. I'm a LONG HAIR NOW fanatic and very proud to say it! :) I recently trimmed my hair about 3 1/2 " and now after reading your post about it not being necessary, I'm so so mad right now! I have to start all over with my hair growth journey. Thanks for the info about mayonnaise and egg. I'm going to try it before my next wash (I only wash it once per week). My hair is extremely dry and I need all of the oil I can get. Hot oil treatments, etc. do absolutely nothing for my hair. Why? I don't know. Anyways thanks for your information which I hope will prove to be quite helpful to all of us! :)

WOWSER'S ! How long is your hair...awesome!

No wonder you have all these great tips, looking after your hair would take a bit of work :)

Love the honesty with the trimming the dead ends. I've always suspected it was a money making fable created by the greedy hairdresser. At the rate my hair grows, it's be behind before it was 'healthy' and rid of split ends.

Thanks again.
