Male Cosmetic Surgery is Booming

Updated on June 11, 2013

Let’s face it, the days when cosmetic surgery was strictly for women and a couple of stray men here and there are over. These days, cosmetic surgeons and the clinics they work in are seeing men come in for treatment more and more. Men at any age are thinking about the way they look. They want to look their best, and they want to stay young, or at least to appear that way. At age 40 or 50 or 60, male cosmetic surgery is a booming business.

Male Cosmetic Surgery is more common than you would think.

What Kinds of Cosmetic Surgery are Men Getting?

The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has all the statistics that show just how popular male cosmetic surgery is becoming. Along with the hair care products, the skin products, the diet and exercise supplements and programs, men are putting out the dollars to receive appearance enhancing surgery. The top five cosmetic treatments that men are checking into cosmetic clinics for are corrective nose surgery, eyelid surgery, breast reductions, hair transplantation, and liposuction. To break it down by sex, 24 percent of  all nose jobs are performed on men. Fifteen percent of liposuction procedures and eyelid surgeries are performed on men. This means that a very significant proportion of the 8.7 million cosmetic treatments given in the past year were for men.

Male Liposuction

Large numbers of men are seeking liposuction treatment, a procedure that for most of its existence was dominated by female customers. The areas men tend to have treated with liposuction differ in some degree from that of women. One of the most popular spots for liposuction in men are the love handles, those bulges of excess weight on either side of the stomach. Love handles are especially difficult to get rid of through diet and exercise, so many men are having liposuction as a solution to the problem.

Another very popular liposuction procedure is male breast reduction. Some men develop excess breast fat as they age. Others have pockets of breast fat from very early on. In either case, these fat deposits are amenable to liposuction treatment. Given the stigma many men feel towards enlarged breasts, these men are seeking out reduction in ever greater numbers. Nose Reconstruction and Reshaping

Nose jobs, or rhinoplasty, are another quickly growing cosmetic procedure among males. Whether because of accidents that disfigured the nose or to treat bulges or bumps they were born with, many men seek out the services of plastic surgeons each year. Under general recommendations, males can start to plan for rhinoplasty at the age of 15, when the bones and tissues of the nose have completed their growth.

Eyelid Surgery for Men

Many men want to improve the appearance of their upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery is performed in men for a variety of reasons. Sometimes excess or loose skin can obscure the fold of the upper eyelids and even impair vision. Puffiness of the upper eyelids or droops in the lower eyelids can make men look tired and older than their years. Finally, many men desire to have the fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids smoothed out.

Hair Transplants

Of course, one of the biggest cosmetic surgical procedures for men is the hair transplant. Some men start to bald very early, even in their 20s, while some men only begin to lose their hair much later in life. In either case, this is an important issue for many men who feel much less attractive to the opposite sex without hair. Hair transplants involve moving the hair follicles from one part of the body to the scalp. The cosmetic surgeon painstakingly moves and transplant one hair at a time for a natural looking head of hair. There is also eyebrow hair transplants available, which you can read more about here.

Costs of Male Cosmetic Surgery

The costs of cosmetic surgery for males will vary depending on the doctor and the exact surgery you are looking for. However, average prices for the different procedures are available. Men seeking out rhinoplasty can expect to pay approximately 3000 dollars and up. Male liposuction, including that for breast reduction, starts at about 2000 dollars. Eyelid surgery will cost men in the range of 2000 dollars as well. Finally, hair transplantation begins around 4000 dollars and can rise to 20,000 if many hair follicles are being moved and implanted.

Worth the Price?

The question for each man will be, Is cosmetic surgery worth the price? How important is it to me to improve my appearance and the way I think about myself and my body? The  answer of course will be different for every man. He can discuss these questions with his cosmetic surgeon. But one thing is certain, more and more men are answering the question in the affirmative, Yes, it is worth it.
