Mother of the bride dresses

By the time your daughter ties the knot, you might find yourself in your late 50s, 60s, 70s or beyond. The special day will give a lot of focus and attention on you as well. Get ready to put on your best smile and best dress!

Unfortunately, for many mothers there seems to be little focus in the stores on glamorous fashion for older women. Many brides' mothers complain that their choices for mother of the bride dresses are simply too plain and dowdy.

Sometimes the remedy might be to shop for a dress that is not traditionally advertised specifically as a "mother of the bride" dress but rather is a dress that can be worn by any woman for any special occasion.

Here are some great choices for dresses, a new look at mother of the bride fashion. Be the mom without looking too matronly.

The second of the photos below is a very unique outfit that you might either love or dislike. I love it. Please share your comments below.

Here is another style that is somewhat similar to the style above, but more economical with a savings of around $400.

Moving away from the black and white, the dress featured below is bold and vibrant in color. Besides for the color, what I love are the neckline and fluidity with which the dress falls.

Tadashi Asymmetric Knotted Silk Gown, Deep Aqua, Asymmetric neckline gathered into knot at left chest, cap sleeves, shirred skirt; $390. Available at neimanmarcus.com. Photo credit neimanmarcus.com

Below is another elegant dress in the golden family of colors. Somehow I just adore this color for a mother of the bride dress.

A Short Skirt Suit for the Mother of the Bride

Lastly although my own preference is for the floor length mother of the bride dress, I would be remiss to not mention at least one shorter option for the women who prefer it. You might also want to consider time of day, location and general formality of the party when choosing the length of your dress.

Here is my pick:

Bigio Collection Rolled-Neck skirt suit, pale gold, silk/wool, $450, available at neimanmarcus.com. Photo credit, neimanmarcus.com

Additionally, when choosing the color and perhaps even the length, you might want to consider what the rest of the bridal party and the mother of the groom are wearing and not match but also not clash. By the way, the dress choices above can as easily be worn by a mother of the groom.

Enjoy the special time, shopping for your mother of the bride (or groom) dress!

I liked 1-5; I really believe black is more appropriate to wear to a wedding... :-)

Hi Nancy, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm glad you liked most of this selection. I guess you are with me on preferring floor length.

Hi Journey, An interesting Hub, especially from a cultural perspective. Don't think I've ever been to an English wedding where anyone apart from the bride and bridesmaids wore floor length dresses!

Black is often considered 'bad form' as a choice for wedding guests. Too much like a funeral, maybe?

Hi 2patricias, thanks so much for coming by and posting a comment? Really, you have never been to an English wedding where the mother of the bride is wearing a floor length dress? That is very interesting...I have indeed heard a lot of people speak against wearing black to a wedding but I think black and white is a nice combination. I have worn black and white to a wedding, myself.

Journey, you have a lot of interest in wedding dresses, and mother of the bride dresses. Have you checked out a website called She Just Got Married? I think you might find it right up your alley in this respect at least.
