My List of the Most Iconic Sportswear Uniforms

Updated on August 1, 2012

A few weeks ago I made a hub about the ugliest sportswear uniforms in the history of sports. If there have been ugly uniforms then definitely there have been cool team uniforms and it’s but proper to give them the accolade they deserve. People may think that sports uniforms does not have anything to do with winning but it makes you wonder how players can really play that well when they don’t feel comfortable in their uniform. Take for example Venus Williams recent game with Shahar Peer where she struggled with her serve as well as with her outfit. When other tennis champs such as Kim Clijsters and Rafael Nadal cruised to their victories, Williams never looked that comfortable in hers. On that day, according to some commentators she had to tug her dress 43 times to keep it a high-thigh level. Take a look at what she wore on that day, the pink one and the other 2 were worn in other games.

Then there are teamwear uniforms that are so very nice to look at especially when you are cheering that team. As you might notice, I may be an associated football fanatic (if you have read some of my hubs) but I have a partiality to baseball uniforms, so you might see more of them here. But let’s start the list with one of the reigning champs:

Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers are a National Basketball Association (NBA) team based in Los Angeles, California. The team’s colors are purple, gold and white. The Lakers are the reigning NBA Champions capturing the franchise's 16th NBA championship on the 50th anniversary of its relocation to Los Angeles. The Lakers logo consists of the team name, "Los Angeles Lakers" written in purple on top of a gold basketball. Purple uniforms are used for road games and gold uniforms are used for home games. The team also wears white jerseys for Sunday and holiday home games. Some of the most popular players come from LA Lakers such as Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Jerry Worth, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. They boast a huge fanbase including some personalities including Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, David Arquette, Sean “Diddy” Combs, CEO of Dreamworks Jeffrey Katzenberg, Zac Efron, Cameron Diaz, the Kardashians (of course) even the First Lady Michelle Obama.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the borough of the Bronx, in New York City, New York and are a member of Major League Baseball's American League East Division. The team colors are navy blue and white. The home uniform is white with distinctive pinstripes and a navy blue interlocking "NY" at the chest. The away uniform is gray with "NEW YORK" written across the chest. Quite distinct is the fact that though the number of the player is in the back both uniform jerseys, the name of the player is not. I think it’s a simple way of saying the player is just one of the team. A navy blue cap with a white interlocking "NY" logo is worn with both uniforms. Both the home and away uniforms are striking and worthy to be mentioned as one of the best sportswear uniforms ever, if not the best, most iconic and classiest MLB sportswear uniform ever.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a Major League Baseball team based in Los Angeles, California, USA. The team is in the Western Division of the National League. It was established in 1883, in Brooklyn, New York, where it was known by a number of nicknames before becoming the Dodgers definitively by the 1932 season. Just like the Yankees jersey, it is also one of the most iconic team uniforms, a classic nonetheless The Dodgers uniforms have not changed much for almost 70 years. The home jersey is in white with blue Dodgers in script across the chest. The red player number under the Dodgers script started in 1952. The away or road jersey is almost the same except it is in gray rather than white with Los Angeles written in blue across the chest.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys are an American football team that plays in the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Dallas Cowboys are probably the most popular NFL team not only for their five Super Bowls but also for one of the biggest sideshows in the league’s history and that is the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Sold-out stadium games can attest to their huge fanbase and national following. Nicknamed America’s Team, Dallas Cowboys remains one of the most valuable team second only to FC Manchester United. Their uniforms and blue star logo is one of the most popular and best know team logos in professional sports.

Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are an American professional baseball team based in Chicago, Illinois. They are members of the Central Division of Major League Baseball's National League. They are one of two Major League clubs based in Chicago (the other being the Chicago White Sox). The Cubs are also one of the two remaining charter members of the National League (the other being the Atlanta Braves). The team colors are blue, red and white. I like the home uniforms better than the away and the alternate teamwear uniforms.

Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders are a professional American football team in the NFL based in the city of Oakland, California. They currently play in the Western Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The team colors are black and silver which can be seen in their current silver and black uniform. Since they first used the teamwear in 1963, which consists of silver helmets with one-eyed pirate logo on it, silver pants, and either black or white jerseys, it has not changed much. Black jerseys have silver numbers on it right across the chest while the white jerseys have black numbers in the same position.

These are just some of the few sportswear uniforms that I have compiled as the classiest and iconic uniforms in professional sports. Part 2 would feature more cool uniforms in hockey, football, baseball and basketball, so if you think there are more worthy uniforms out there let me know so I can check with my list. If it’s not in my list and I do find it nice then I can include it. Let us just remember we each have our own opinion. What may look pleasant to my eyes might not be on yours. Hope you enjoy my list though.
