Styles of Outdoor Umbrellas

The most important thing to consider when thinking about getting a new umbrella for your outdoor space is how you plan on using that space. Because there are a variety of styles of outdoor umbrellas to choose from, you should consider if you will be using it for yourself, on the patio, near the pool, while entertaining or all of the above. Let’s look at some of these ideas in a little more detail.

If you go about choosing some type of patio umbrella, then you will likely find that you have a couple different choices. The first of which is the standard market umbrella style. This style is the one you will see most often at outdoor cafes and other restaurants. These have a wood or metal pole that supports the umbrella canopy itself. They come in various sizes from 6’ diameter to 11’ diameter. Special, larger custom canopies can be ordered as well and some will require more heavy duty stands to support the extra weight.

Looking for an even larger or more spacious style of patio umbrella? You need to consider the offset or cantilever umbrella styles. These refer to the fact that the pole that supports the canopy is not sitting directly below the umbrella canopy itself. These types of umbrellas have a type of curve in the pole or a swing-arm mechanism that allows you to place the canopy in a wide variety of positions and angles. This gives you more flexibility for your shading needs and allows you to have more usable space beneath your canopy. With an offset umbrella you don’t need to worry about bumping into the stand or moving the table and chairs here or there. You can put stuff any which way you want beneath this style of umbrella. These cantilever styles also work well for use as an umbrella over a kids picnic bench. Even an adult picnic bench or table without space for a traditional market umbrella style pole to fit within can benefit from the offset swing arm feature.

Because market umbrellas have been around for quite some time, there is a little more in the way of fashionable style to them. These have more in the way of color choices, fabric choices, canopy design styles and the like. There are newer outdoor and pool umbrellas that even have a scalloped or frilly look to them that are really fun and whimsical. They look like some type of flower you might see growing in your garden. There are also different edging patterns and other unique canopy styles that are not as readily available with the more custom cantilever models.

Prices For Outdoor Umbrellas

Because of the availability of the internet, you can find a wide range of pricing on the various styles of outdoor umbrellas and stands.  For instance, on some sites you can find a simple and basic market umbrella for around $30 USD.  Another site will list that same umbrella for closer to $50.  This is similar to the cantilever and offset umbrellas, they range anywhere from $250-1,000 USD.  The range has something to do with the size of the canopy, but it also relates to the profit margins of the company representing the products.  You will find that a more custom style of outdoor umbrella, or a custom made will cost you anywhere from 25-40% more.

Care For Your Outdoor Umbrellas

Just like with outdoor shades, windy weather conditions are not your outdoor umbrellas friend. The sun and rain will take a toll on your outdoor patio furniture, including your umbrella. For this reason, keeping it folded or closed in poor weather is your best bet. You can clean most umbrellas with a mild soap and nylon bristle brush to remove dirt and bird droppings. If you own a style that has a wooden pole or canopy support members, an occasional wood sealer wouldn’t hurt. If you find some rust on your umbrella stand or if you own a metal pole variety, making sure to lightly sand and paint with a rust-proof paint would be a good way to prolong the life of your outdoor umbrella.
