Labradorite ((Ca,Na)(Al,Si)4O8) is a kind of feldspar called a plagioclase. History of Labradorite

Labradorite takes its name from the Labrador Coast in eastern Canada. Most labradorite production takes place in Canada, both on the Labrador Coast and in Newfoundland, but labradorite is also found and exported from Finland, Norway, Ukraine and the United States. While Europeans did not discover labradorite in Canada until the 18th century, the natives of the Labrador region had long believed the stone to hold metaphysical properties and used it in a powdered form to heal their sicknesses. They called labradorite "firestone" in reference to its powerful light-refracting qualities. Today, particularly high quality labradorite is known by several other names: spectrolite, moonstone and sunstone. While labradorite is similar in appearance to opal, they are dissimilar physically. The labradorite that displays the best "labradoresence", or particularly strong, iridescent light refraction, are highly prized for jewelry. There has been a sharp spike in public interest in labradorite since 2005.
