MAC Cosmetics is a Canadian makeup brand that carries high-quality products in simple and sleek packaging. This review is about one of their Skinfinishes called Soft and Gentle. It's quite popular as it is a light pearly highlighter that works well on many skin tones. As with all MAC packaging (other than limited edition items) in comes in a matte black compact that has some weight to it and doesn't feel cheap. The top is clear so you can see what the colour of the product is before opening it.

Mineralize Skinfinishes are baked products (rather than pressed like their eyeshadows) so the texture is a bit different. It feels smoother but the finish isn't as opaque as something pressed. This means that you'll be able to achieve a more sheer application easily and then be able to build it up from there. The photo to the right shows Soft and Gentle up close. It appears to be a warm golden colour, but when applied, it is a lot lighter.

Application

It is best to use a product like this with a fluffier, less dense brush so that a minimal amount of product is picked up by the brush. This will make sure that you don't apply too much at once. Typically, highlighter is applied to the top of your cheekbones and under your eyebrow, but some prefer to apply it to other parts of the face as well. You can also apply it lightly all over your face to create a nice glow.

A product like this can also be used as an eyeshadow. Most products that have the same texture as an eyeshadow can be used as one (except for reds which aren't always eye-safe). Baked products usually need the help of an eye primer or base if you want to use them on your eyes. This can also work well as a highlighter on the inner corner of your eyes.

MAC's Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is a great highlighter. It comes with 10g of product which is a lot. It'll last you quite a while, even if you use it every day. Because you don't need to use a lot of it every time, it can be your only highlighter (if you don't like having a lot of makeup sitting around). You can achieve different effects by using more or less of the product and by applying it to different areas of the face.
