Behind the Scorpion Tattoo

When it comes to distinct designs, the scorpion is sure to fit the bill. It's fierce looking and deadly. These tattoos can be done in a variety of different designs and in a variety of colors, such as brown, blue, red, and tan.

  • The scorpion is easily identified by its two front claws and a stinger. If you are looking for an intimidating design, the scorpion screams it.
  • There are a variety of scorpion species around the world.
  • Part of the arachnid family and closely related to spiders, they are believed to be over 400 million years old.
  • The scorpion has a bad reputation and it has been that way for thousands of years. In most cases, though, it is not as deadly to humans as one would think and the stings are said to be no worse then a bee sting. There are scorpions that do have the ability to kill humans in one sting, but not many.
  • The scorpion does have symbolic meaning, based on its behavior. For example, when mating, the male scorpion does a seductive sex dance to impress the female. The tattoo, then, can represent male sexuality and arousal.

Symbolism

Many ancient cultures believed the scorpion was symbolic.

  • The Mayans compared the scorpion to surgery because they numb their victims before the kill.
  • In Buddhism, the scorpion can be found in ancient weapons and other artifacts.
  • The scorpion is also symbolic to a variety of religions. It has almost always been associated with evil.
  • The scorpion was also popular in Egyptian legends and mythology. Egypt is where most of the dangerous scorpions in the world reside. Some of them have a deadly sting, even to humans. Scorpions have played a vital role in Egyptian history. The Egyptian goddess Isis used gigantic scorpions to protect her as she searched for her lover's body. This corresponds with one of the more popular meanings: protection.
  • In Greek mythology, the scorpion symbolizes a fighter with quick speed and a deadly ending. This is one of the more popular meanings of the tattoo. You may be a fighter, a boxer, or something of that nature and your tattoo can represent that. It can also represent a fight for life, such as surviving an accident or cancer. In the end, your tattoo represents what you want it to represent.
  • The scorpion is also associated with Scorpio, which is a zodiac sign. The scorpion is the eighth sign of the western zodiac. Those who are born from October 23 through November 21 are Scorpios. The Scorpio represents struggle and resistance. It also represents victory in life as well. Scorpios are said to be devoted, loyal, dignified, and sensitive.

Meanings

Since there are so many different associations with the scorpion, it can mean many different things.

  • Passion
  • Fight
  • Toughness
  • Endurance
  • Perseverance
  • Protection
  • Death
  • Defensiveness
  • Treachery
  • Evil
  • Loyalty

One of the main meanings of the scorpion is toughness. The scorpion is a tough creature relative to its size. It is also a fighter. The scorpion tattoo can represent both. Many people choose the scorpion because it is their Zodiac sign. They may associate their tattoo with their sign. Either way, there are a variety of meanings behind the scorpion.

You want to make sure you take time to view a variety of designs before you choose one to get inked. This goes for any design that you may choose. Take your time and make sure you do all the research. Scorpion tattoos are usually small, but they come in all shapes and sizes. There are also different variations, such as a tribal scorpion. With all things considered, take your time and make sure you choose a tattoo that fits you. This is why it is very important to fully understand what your tattoo design represents.

Best Scorpion Tattoos

In my opinion, the best scorpion tattoos are the designs with detail and shading. I don't mind tribal scorpion tattoos, but the detail work is what sets these tattoos off. While scorpions make for a great alone tattoo, I like the fact that it can be designed with other tattoo symbols.

Check out the 5th scorpion tattoo on the right. You can clearly see a big difference with this tattoo compared to the others. Looks awesome. So if you're considering getting a scorpion tattoo, that would be the way to do. Both design and placement are great.

Wow, these are so fierce, especially the top one. My favorite is the tribal one though, from the Alabama Democrat. Voting this Up and Beautiful.

Only seen a scorp tat one time on a guy and it looked like a prison one. These pics are alright with the meanings and all but they're still kinda creepy. No offense meant of course, one person's creep is another person's cool.

This hub was very interesting. I don't see a lot of hubs about scorpion tattoos, but out of the ones I have seen, this is, by far, the best.

I found this hub interesting, as I actually have a scorpion tattoo. It took me 3 months to finalize the design, as I wanted something unique and drew it myself. Not sure about all the reasons, but can relate to a few lol.

Socially sharing, up and interesting.

*Phoebe, thank you so much for taking the time to come by and read this article. I really do appreciate your comment. Take care.

*Brett, always good to see you pal. I am glad you shared that Brett. Those who haven't had a tattoo should realize that it is important to not jump into getting inked. Very important to think things out and get a tattoo that you want, that you like. Glad you made that point.

I have a question about symbolism. A tattoo of a scorpion piercing a heart. I would like to know what the symbolism is in that? Thank you!

Karen, great question. There are a variety of different ways that you can look at this. First, the heart represents love, desire, family, ect. The scorpion represents death, pain, toughness, but also strength, fragility. If you combine these symbols as a tattoo, it could symbolize lost desire, pain of love, a protected heart. Remember Karen, in the end, your tattoo symbolizes what you want it too. The experts can say what they like, but it only holds deep meaning within the wearer of such a tattoo.

The blue scorpion tattoo looks really cool. The rest of the designs are neat. Since the scorpion represents pain, death and courage, it would also be a good choice or more meaningful for someone who has been through hell and back. this was pretty awesome!
