The shelf life of beauty products

Updated on June 19, 2013

Before my marriage, I hardly used any makeup on my face much to the annoyance of my mother. Post marriage, things changed and now I a self claimed makeup addict. Though I must admit I am more interested in the eye makeup. Last year I had purchased a jewel eye liner pencil from India. Recently in a party, a friend complimented me on my eye liner and wanted to know from where had I purchased it, when I told her that I had got it from India last year, she warned me that maybe I am using an expired product. As soon as I reached home, I went to check whether my liner's usage date was expired or not. To my relief, it could still be used (not for long). This made me curious and I researched various books and links to find when is the proper date to throw away your cosmetics. In this hub, I am linking the various articles which deal with the shelf life of cosmetics

  • Mascara should be used as soon as the bottle is open as it has a tendency of getting contaminated faster than other beauty products due to the pumping of the brush. It is advisable to use mascara for maximum 5 months. http://beauty.about.com/od/mascara/f/throwout.htm
  • Concealer 15 -18 months
  • Fragrances 2 to 2.5 years as there are few chances of them being contaminated.
  • Eye shadow cream eyes shadow 15 months, powder eye shadow up to 2 years
  • Foundation cream or compact foundation 18 months, oil free foundation 12 months http://www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=11899. Oil free foundations tend to dry out fast as compared to the cream foundation.
  • Powder the shelf life of powder is two years, however the shelf life of loose powder is 3 years. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080306103926AAu0BAK. Though some say that if the powder is kept in a suitable condition it may be used longer.
  • Pencil Eyeliner and lip liner lasts for 2 years because it is sharpened regularly thereby preventing in the growth f bacteria.http://www.besthealthmag.ca/look-great/makeup/the-truth-about-makeup-expiry-dates
  • Liquid eyeliner 3 months as it is moist and can catch bacteria more easily as compared to pencil eyeliner.
  • Blusher cream blusher 15 to 18 months, powder blusher up to 2 years. even bronzer can be used for 2 years.
  • Lip gloss 15- 18 months
  • Lipstick 2 years
  • Nail polish 12 months
  • Moisturizer 12 months. Use one moisturizer at a time.

In case you want to increase the shelf life of your cosmetics, here is something for you to read http://www.madlyjuicy.com/?p=2566. Here is an interesting article which has " cosmetic calender". The calculation is done on basis of batch code. Read http://checkcosmetic.net/ After writing this hub I found out that my nail polish and liquid eyeliner had expired and needed to be thrown.
