Tips and Tricks For Growing Long, Strong and Healthy Hair

Too many times when people think about growing long and strong hair they think of it as too hard to maintain and end up just whacking it off. Well, the truth is it's not really hard to maintain at all. And if you read my articles you'll know that my own hair measure around 4 1/2 feet in length and I know what I'm talking about.

Of course it's definitely not maintenance free but if you use the right tips, you can have long, strong and healthy locks before you know it! (And with minimal effort).

This is an update to the other articles that I have written with a little more information since there seemed to be some who wanted some further tips...

Click to read my article, "How To Grow Long Luscious Hair" which is the first article of these two parts and it covers the basics for growing long hair. It covers the nutritional supplement facts, and basic long hair care tips.

My sister, who also has extremely long hair, has written an article with pictures telling of her long hair journey. Please check it out here!

A Few More Tips...

  • Never use elastic bands to secure hair unless they have fabric covering them.
  • Stay away from heat styling products and avoid washing hair in too hot of water. (Lukewarm with a cool rinse is best).
  • Avoid chemical products and permanents. Perms may look nice but always have negative effects on the health of our hair. ( Not only is there "permanent" waves, there may permanent damage). For healthier and effective ways to wave hair without the harmful side effects, please see my article on How to Wave Hair.
  • Deep condition (using one of the ideas below) at least twice per month.

DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENTS

NOTE: Always apply treatments to clean, freshly washed hair.

HOMEMADE MAYONNAISE AND EGG TREATMENT

You will need...

  • Twice as much real mayonnaise as what you normally would use of conditioner for regular conditioning.
  • One to three eggs depending on current hair length. (One for shoulder length, two for waist length and three for longer).
  • Thermal shower cap
  • Blow dryer or hot towels

Blend together and apply mixture to hair. (Room temperature to slightly warm is best for absorption). Wind hair on top of head and cover with a thermal shower cap. Blast lightly with a blow dryer a few times or cover with hot towels. The heat will help the conditioner to absorb better. (Don't use excessive heat). Leave on for about one hour and rinse with cool water. Use a mild two-in-one shampoo to remove excess residue continuing to use cool water. The cool will help to seal back the hair which will lock in softness and shine.

MAYONNAISE AND AVOCADO TREATMENT

This treatment is much like the previous treatment. You will follow the same steps except for using avocado in the place of the egg.

Use 1/2 avocado for shoulder length, 1 whole avocado for waist length and 1 1/2 to 2 avocados for longer hair.

NOTE: Both of these treatments may be enhanced by adding 1/4 to 1/2 cup of olive or coconut oil to the mixture but may be slightly harder to wash out. Also, a few drops of aromatic oils may be added to help the smell and to make it a more relaxing process. Ones to try: Peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, or lavender oil.

NOTE: You may also use a mixture of warm coconut and olive oils for hot oil treatments and split end treatments. Remember, if you microwave the oils to warm them do so for only a few seconds and be very careful as you could easily be burned.

~Always let hair air dry naturally and do not brush when wet.

If you do not wish to use one of the above treatments you can still deep condition using your regular hair conditioner.

Just use twice as much conditioner as you normally would and use the heat method with the thermal shower cap and leave on for an hour. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.

This should be fun, I am 40 will this still work on someone who has to take heart meds and bi-polor meds?

Thanks for commenting, Lana!  The medications shouldn't be a problem as far as the conditioning and other tips.  I have taken medication for various reasons through the years and my hair is still long and healthy.  However, some underlying medical conditions can affect the health of your hair but can helped or even corrected with supplements.  There are many supplements available on the market for hair, JUST PLEASE DON'T NEGLECT to check with your doctor first to make sure that the supplements that you plan to take won't conflict with your medication.

just curious, with hair that long, doesn't it get hot and sweaty in the summer? Do you typically wear it down - or do you put it up?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 8 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Annette:  LOL  Yes, in the summer my hair is almost always up with an occasional ponytail.  I twist it up in a pretty twist then I have a small hairpiece of curls that is close to my hair color that I wrap around the twist.  The small curly hairpiece keeps me from having to curl the ends of my own hair and break them off.  The hair piece resembles a ponytail holder with brown curls attached.  My hair grows even faster when I wear it up a lot because it doesn't break as easily.

I was taking a medication a couple years back and it made my hair fall out quickly. My hair stylist was afraid I was going bald. I was scared to death. But, thankfully my Doctor knew that it was a side-effect of the med. She changed it for me and now my hair is back at it's full thickness. I am so thankful for that! I think meds do more to us that we realize. Great hub! I think I will try the mayo treatment! Thanks for the advice.

Janelle 7 years ago

Thanks for your great tips! I have been trying to grow my hair out for years but I always got split ends and had to cut it back to the length I started from, its really a vicious cycle, but I have stopped dying my hair altogether and since then my hair has been so soft! I can't wait to use your deep conditioning recipe I have heard of doing it with just mayonaise but I never thought to use eggs as well, but thanks again, you seem to really know a lot about hair, you're just the type of person I will take advice from!

Good information. I am glad to see you mention the affects of chemicals on the hair. I use to have a girlfriend who wanted to grow her hair long and she always complained about it not growing. After further investigation I discovered she really did not treat her hair that well and it was growing it just kept breaking off. I stopped using harmful chemicals on my hair at the beginning of this year and have been blessed with more hair growth and healthier hair.

Stephanie 7 years ago

My hair is bleach blonde and i love the color and have been dying my hair that color for years. i also blow dry and staighten my hair all the time. the ends of my hair are very dry and i want my hair to be smooth and glossy. my hair stylist told me to use protein treatments but the products are expensive. i was thinking about the mayo and egg treatment. is it the equivlent of the protein treatments? would the products you listed, like the neutrogena deep conditioner work as well as the products from a salon?

thanks,

stephanie

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 7 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Stephanie:  Hi and thanks for stopping by my hub.  Yes, as a matter of fact, the mayonnaise and egg treatment actually IS a protein treatment, just a homemade one :)  and it is 'my opinion' that many less expensive brands indeed do work as well and in some cases maybe even better than salon products.

vida 7 years ago

My hair is very very curly, and for the past 2 years ive been straightening it with a flat iron. over the last 2 years my hair hasn't really gown much. last week i started wearing my hair curly again, in hopes it'll help my hair grow faster! Do you think this'll help? With curly hair its hard to tell if its growing cuz it curls up so much when it dry's!

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 7 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Vida: Curly hair usually grows slower than straight hair but the positive change that you're making (no longer applying heat) will be like a drink of water in the desert for your hair. It may just reward you with some extra growth in return!

Moobug324: Don't overwash, Don't overbrush, Don't overuse heat & styling products and CONDITION! CONDITION! CONDITION!!!

I have really overprocessed my hair. i used a hir color remover and dyed my hair and two weeks later i used a perm, all my hair fell out and i had to cut my hair off. i cried because my hair was so long and it took forever to grow. Ithanks for the tip. I tried it once and it really makes a difference

brittany 6 years ago

I've been trying to grow my hair out for a few months now, and I get a trim every 1 1/2 to 2 months. My hair seems to get just above my chest and then when I get my trim it looks about an inch shorter. And this happens everytime, its like a its a cycle and my hair doesn't grow any further than above my chest. But I HARDLY EVER use the blow dryer,I straighten my hair 0 to 1 times a month, I always condition and use morocan oil.. I just don't understand why its not growing? pleeease help!

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 6 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

brittany: Refrain from trimming in spite of what you've heard. Hair grows from the roots and it sounds like when your hair is just starting to make progress that it's trimmed. As long as you deep condition the ends often split ends won't be a big problem. I NEVER trim mine...just condition well and pin it up at home.

miss licy: How long did you do this? It is not a "quick fix." Taking good care of your hair is an everyday process for the rest of your life...these tips just tell you what to do.

brittany 6 years ago

thanks.. soo when should I trim my hair? or should I just not get a trim and follow your tips above? Will my hair just continue to grow without the trim if I just keep my ends healthy and condition it and what not? And what are some good products to help for helping it to grow, and to just keep it nice and healthy?

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 6 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

Brittany...My hair is to the back of my knees and is NOT trimmed! So yes, it will grow if you keep it healthy. Tips for growing and keeping it healthy are above.

sarah 6 years ago

i ruined my hair 8 years ago from dying and over processing. it started breaking off about 2 inches or so away from the scalp. all the hair on the top half of my head was very short and fried off. it looked terrile. i had to cut a lot off and wear scarves and hats all the time over my head. it took forever for it to get normal looking even. finally 2 years ago i chopped it really super short and it has been growing nicely and is healthy ever since. its past my shoulders. i trim it about twice a year i guess, just whenever i feel like it needs it. i take super good care of it and i started using hask placenta products about a month or 2 ago and it has made a big difference and its super cheap from walmart or wherever. my only problem is my staticy hair in the winter!! drives me crazy. no matter what i use. i do moisture treatments and use moisture products. drink lots of water. almost never use heat or damaging products. anyone know of anything to help this?

i am trying to grow my hair long. it has never been past my boob area. i really hope i can get it long and healthy.

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 5 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

farhati: First of all, before I say what you SHOULD do, let me encourage you what NOT to do. Do NOT GIVE UP and just cut it off! So many people get discouraged when their hair gets completely damaged and the first thing they want to do is just cut it off and start over! This is not the answer! The quality of hair can be miraculously restored with a little time and patience and you will not regret your decision.

Okay, to answer your question, there are a few things to remember. Whatever has caused your hair to get damaged in the first place you MUST DISCONTINUE doing! If too many heat products damaged your hair, then you must find style alternatives to set your hair without heat. If a perm caused it, then try to keep from perming your hair and instead try curling it on rollers, (no heat), multi-braiding for volume or just wearing it straight. Multi-braiding, (putting two or more braids in damp hair and taking out hours later), is the method that I personally use most often when I want waves, and if you opt to use several braids it has a very close-to-perm look when the braids are removed.

Next thing is extremely important, CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION! If hair damage is severe, mix coconut and olive oil in equal parts and completely cover your shampooed or dry hair with the oil, (making the ends of your hair almost dripping) and let it set one to two hours. After hair sets, grab a bottle of dishwashing liquid and use a small amount as a shampoo and wash out the oil. When the excess oil is washed off of your hair then follow with a regular hair conditioner. Style as usual. If your hair is greasy, you didn't wash out oil good enough and should repeat the steps.

You can also apply mayonnaise and eggs the same way as a conditioner or if you want to buy a good store brand then try Mane and Tail, (for horses or humans), or Garnier Fructis conditioners. But remember to leave them on for one to two hours.

Use at least two or three more times conditioner than you use shampoo. So when you're shopping, buy two to three bottles of conditioner for every one bottle of shampoo.

Make sure to limit blow drying but if you have no choice then use the low setting. Do not comb or brush when your hair when it's wet. Do not give up if you don't see the results you're looking for right away. Remember, hair is not usually completely damaged overnight, and it takes time to restore it as well. However, I will not be surprised if you see some dramatic results in the health of your hair in just two weeks by following these conditioning tips two or three times a week, (regular conditioning with every wash), and by using the other tips every time you wash and style your hair.

Hello! I have a problem. I live in Las Vegas so my hair dries out very easily. Also, I have very wavy and slightly curly hair, so it's hard to take care of. I also have Celiac Disease, so I can't eat wheat, gluten, barley, oats, or rye, making it hard to keep my hair shiny. I would keep it short, but I don't look good in short hair. I REALLY need some help. Right now, my hair is at the top of my back, layered, and is dark brown. I also like to go swimming a lot, so that's also may be a problem. Please Help! Thanks!

Hi, I really need your help and i would be more than happy if you could help me out. im 18 and i used to have very long curly hair down my back. One summer i decided to dye it black and i hated it as my hair was natrually light brown with golden highlights.. my hair was so damaged from the black dye as i did it myself at home that the hairdressers had cut my hair for the first time up to my shoulders and dyed it brown. Over the last 2 years i have continously dyed it and straighten it and my hair has been so damaged. On saturday i decided to get blonde highlights ( i find when im depressed the most i decide to change my colour thinking it may cheer me up) the blonde highlights have came out horribly and a yellow look to it. She had cut my hair to my shoulders again as she said it was very damaged. I hate the highlights and i just want to go back to my own brown colour now. I have arranged an appointment with her tomorrow in hope she can dye my hair back to brown and i am hoping this will be the last time i ever touch my hair. I want to grow it healthy now and without any dye's , sadly i always have this urge when im depressed or down to change my hair thinking it will help me. My question is i have dyed/stripped/highlighted my hair so much during these 2 years and now im about to get rid of the YELLOW looking highlights tomorrow to go back to natural colour, i would be more than grateful if you could please please provide me with information on looking after my hair , also im a vegetarian and i do not eat fish so i am aware of the fact im lacking in so many proteins and vitamins and etc.. I really need your help.. Thankyou so much

hi, i'm 15 and i'm deadly inlove with long healthy hair but my hair is just below my shoulders. my friends say that my hair has gotten longer recently but i don't see it- and it also feels thinner. i wash my hair every two days in the mornings before school and dry it with a hairdryer on hot :/ then if it's got major kinks i will straighten them but i rarely use the straighteners because i know i'm damaging my hair enough with the hair dryer. how often are you supposed to wash your hair normal? without the egg and mayo tricks, just shampoo and conditioner? i heard that you should shower everyday but washing your hair too often takes away all it's natural coloring doesn't it? also the right side of my hair (just a little part, upto my ear) is shaved and when it first started growing it was growing fast and quite thick. this time it's growing much slower and thinner. i don't want to grow it out properly yet but i thought it was weird that it had thinned. sorry for the massive paragraph :|

I dyed my hair a month before I put a perm in like I normally do. But this time my hair burnt off. Not all of it just the died stuff. My hair was in the middle of my back and now its shoulder length. But my hair color is changing all tones of red brown and blonde. And u want to dye it. Can i? It's been over 2 months since I permed my hair. It has grown since then and its full again. I keep with the deep condition treatments, but I want to dye it. What should I do?

My hair is damaged from chlorinated pools. It is also colored. Will these remedies work for me? I have been thinking about cutting it all off. But if there's hope to fix it I want to very badly. It's curly, so not combing it would be a disaster. (No?) It would get matted, tangled and eventually have to be cut-out. I live in vegas and swimming is important to me in the hot summer. I've tried swimcaps but they're hard to keep all the hair in. What would you suggest?

Thanks so much :)

blessedmommy profile image

blessedmommy 4 years ago from Oklahoma City Metro, Oklahoma Author

@ Fairytale: First of all, if your hair wasn't so dry it probably wouldn't be that frizzy. So the first things first you'll want to make sure you get that moisture locked in! Use heavy conditioning and leave it in for hours if you can. You may even try using straight hot coconut or olive oil treatments. (Make sure your hair is clean and damp). When you wash out the oil, use a mild shampoo even if you need to wash it a couple of times to remove the oil. If your hair is really dry, washing once should be sufficient because your hair will drink up the excess oil. It's ok if you need to apply a little mousse to tame it until your hair gets healthier, just make sure you wash it more often. Same with the hairspray, if you have to use a little to tame it go ahead but wash it often. The main thing to remember is to stay away from the heat at all costs, condition heavy after every wash and your hair will be more manageable soon!

I'm 16 and I've seen a significant amount of hair loss and my hair used to be really thick and now it's quite thin T_T would I be bald soon? Or is there another way for me to get my thick hair back? I know one person drops 100 strands per day but I think I drop more than that.

Divya, try taking the herbal supplement, "horsetail" and drinking plain gelatin water or a using a gelatin supplement. Use along with a good multivitamin/mineral supplement. It has done wonders for many people who may be lacking vital nutrients to hair growth.

Hi! I found this article very informal, however, how many times a week/month should I be doing this? Also, how long does it take before I see results?

Paula Lala, it all depends on what condition your hair is in. People with normal hair should see results after the very first treatment, others with more damaged hair could take up to a month of weekly treatments before smoother hair is noticeable.

Good tips! I really like the idea of enhancing the conditioner with olive and/or coconut oil, very beneficial to hair health.
