Before we ever used synthetic pills and prescription medicine and creams, we used what we knew worked best, that being herbs, foods, poultices, oils and other natural and tested formulas derived from the plants that grew around us. Natural essential oils have long been known and used for their healing effects. Do not confuse them with the synthetic fragrant oils that are mass produced and sold as natural essential oils that have no healing benefits. So it is important to look at the list of ingredients before purchasing yourself any essential oils or creams that claim to have essential oils in them.

These oils vary in price but can be watered down or added to a carrier oil. A carrier oil is great to use if you don't want the essential oil to be as concentrated. Combining the essential oil with a carrier oil will be less effective for what it is being used for but it will also cause less of a reaction on the skin compared to using just the essential oil. Some good carrier oils are grapeseed oil, almond oil, olive oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil or even vegetable oil can be used.

Lavender Oil

This is a very commonly used oil. It is good to use for colds, cough, flu, muscle pain and even sunburns. It works also as a anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory oil, so it's great for use on cuts, sore muscles and soaking your feet after a long day. It also contains anti-septic and analgesic properties. The scent of lavender oil is well-known for its soothing and calming effects on the mind and body. Lavender oil should be mixed with a carrier oil because it often causes skin irritation but can be used alone as well. Should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a great oil that can be used for cuts and burns, flu, colds, and insect bites. It can be applied directly to the infected area because it is an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal essential oil. Great to use if you have any fungal issues on your feet and can be used to treat ringworm. Tea tree oil can also be used to help heal pimples and cold sores, but a word of caution, it can cause irritation, so it may be best to be used along with a carrier oil or a favourite lotion. It can be used along with your favourite facial cleanser to maintain clear skin. It should also be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy.

The Standard Ratio for Mixing Essential Oils

The standard ratio for mixing essential oils with a carrier oil, lotion, cream or cleanser is: 3% or 10 drops per ounce/30 ml or if being used on the face use 1.5% or 5 drops per ounce/30ml.

If these measurements are still too strong and create skin irritation, use 3 drops per ounce/30ml.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil is an effective oil to use for respiratory ailments, asthma, for sore muscles and even as a bug repellent. It also contains analgesic and anti-septic properties. When smelled, it is useful to stimulate the brain and clear your head. Rosemary can also be used along with your shampoo routine to enhance the health of your hair and promote growth and strength of the hair. It is important to note that rosemary can cause irritation to the skin, so it should be used along with a carrier oil or lotion to dilute it. Please also note that people with high blood pressure should not use this oil as well as women that are pregnant.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is very versatile and would be a great addition to your medicine cabinet. It can be used for respiratory infections, colds, nasal and sinus congestion, and coughs and also great for soothing sore muscles. Eucalyptus oil has analgesic and anti-septic properties and contains anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, anti-bacterial, decongestant and expectorant healing elements. This oil must always be mixed with a carrier oil or a lotion to dilute when it is being put on the skin. Please note that it should not be used for young children, if you are pregnant or if you have high blood pressure. It can however be added to your bath water along with your favourite bubble bath if you are struggling with a cold or congestion. It can also be used as a bug-repellent.

These four essential oilsare a great addition to your natural medicine cupboard. Their healing benefits surpass the synthetic commercial brands of creams and lotions. They are a great beginner essential oils set to start out with and experiment to see what you like the best and which ones work the best for you. These oils are inexpensive and the most affordable, they can be mixed with carrier oils and lotions to last longer, all along with being all natural.

G'day and thanks for the excellent information about essential oils. After reading this, I want to run out and invest in some real, pure essential oils! I plan to use my own carrier oil, probably olive oil. But how do you tell the difference between synthetic and pure, plant derived essential oils?

So you do have to be wary of those claiming to have the real thing, go by reputation and use your own common sense.

What the...?? I had no idea synthetic oils were made from coal tar. I plan to search that link you sent, and shop carefully for the purest and cleanest essential oils expressed from real plants!

great hub -- I use 100 drops of peppermint oil plus 100 drops of clove oil in 3 ounces of olive oil for congestion and sore muscles both. Just rub on like vicks vapor rub, or absorbene jr.
