Why Is Gold So Precious?

Updated on July 22, 2012

I was talking today with my coworkers and exchanging points of view. And the three of us were caught up in some kind of.. nice and interesting argumentation. The first reason to me was greed and status and my second friend referred to its rarity and the third one came up with this phrase: "I think it last forever", and he was right. All the three of us were in this going back and forth in history. I came up with my knowledge of how The Ameri-Indians or pre-columbian natives, didn't think of it as precious. They just saw it as a decorative metal used in temples, every day jewelry and all kind of statues. " but why are we here at work," He took a twenty dollar bill and put it on the table, "Why do we have to work for a simple piece of paper. The third coworker came up with the origin of the word, 'Salary' Back in Roman times, Salt was as precious as any currency today... But why Gold is still considered so precious? The first Coworker even put me against the wall in a way saying, " If you were in an Island by yourself and find 2 jars of fresh water, and a suitcase full of Gold bars; which one would you go to first?" I said, jokingly, "half and a half. Wouldn't you?"

THE ROOT OF EVIL

Spaniards found out about Eldorado's and thought that will get them rich overnight. Which was true for some. The greed for it became obsessive to the point of killing anyone who would be in their ways. In 79 A.D. lots of people from Pompeii(after the excavations) were found embracing their belongings in Gold.

RARITY

Today more than ever Gold is appreciated for its uniqueness, and it doesn't tarnish. The sole mentioning of how hard it is to come about the more we create this kind of status. Scarcity has played an important role too.

JEWELRY MEANS RICHER

Gold in form of a crafted Jewel can give rich people a reason to be considered stronger economically. And they know, the more the better. Became a symbol of wealth even before biblical times. The world's most coveted metal of all times as it is seen day by day, as its price skyrockets.

THE MORE MONEY, THE MORE GOLD AND VICEVERSA

At first was applied to our Banks, but then was a security that applied to people and the high living above the poor. Today more than ever, prices have been inflated like a financial 'asset' bubble, ready to explode.

THE COLOR TO OUR EYES

Just by naming it, People think of its distinctive color. Is an action-reaction to your brain. And as a domino effect creates that fad or need for it. Maybe that's why some men rather have them blonder.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

As an inert metal found as it is, it can be used in the new nanotechnology for its non transmissible effect. In medicine has lots of applications in drugs that need its malleability and catalyzed effects.

We can keep on talking like I did with my friends at work. But Gold can be like a dangerous Pistol that want to point into your open mouth, which is where morality and greed and evil mix to make you pull that trigger!

LAST INCA TO HIS IMPRISONERS. "I will fill 2 rooms with Gold as high as my hand can reach, and a third room full of Silver. I will tell my people to do it... so you can set me free"

MONCTEZUMA, AZTEC LAST EMPEROR: "They will kill in the name of it and its Christianity"

RAMESSES II, 3300 YEARS AGO; "This golden metal will make my kingdom look sumptuous"
