I Love my Handbags!

Am I normal for having a HaNdBaG obsession?

Let's rewind roughly 27 years. This is when it began: junior high. Back then, we had a "junior highs" instead of middle schools. Junior high was from grades 7-9, which I believe to be the absolute worst age ever for anyone to go through. Socially, emotionally, physically, it is all a big problem. Self-esteem issues are the worst to have, and I am sure I had issues with that.

In my junior high, there were a lot of upper class or upper middle class students. So automatically we had the snob factor. I was a middle class student, who had nice things but not in abundance. My point is this: you were simply not popular or really anyone for that matter if you did not carry a Liz Claiborne or Gucci handbag. The Liz Claiborne handbag most carried was the ivory or black purse pebbled in those cute little triangles. The Gucci that some had was the navy blue bowling style with the signature stripe.

In order to fit in at my junior high school, you had to have one of those handbags. So, all of my friends had them and I didn't. I remember begging and begging my mom to get me one. She refused to pay that amount for a purse, even a small one. Therefore, at the tender age of 13, I felt left out as I carried a plain, non-designer one.

This is probably why I am obsessed with handbags. I purchase one, carry it for a while, then throw it up on Ebay, make a small profit (sometimes), and then get another. It is of cyclic nature, and I enjoy doing it. After about a month or two, I simply get bored with the one I have! I do the same thing with wallets, as I cannot buy a handbag without the matching wallet!

The longest I carried the same handbag was a year. It was a brown and tan Coach Heritage Satchel with a cream stripe, with cream leather trim. The hang tags are essential, and I had three on that bag. =) In for a close second was my Lancel Black drawstring leather bucket bag. I carried it for about 6 months. Gosh, I would love to have those bags back, but I sold them to get another.

I have tried to steer away from my handbag obsession. I sold another Coach bag that I had, and then thought to myself, I don't need another one. I don't need an expensive handbag. I do like the handbags in the Thirty-One catalog, so I will have a party and get one for free!

I did just that. I got a great handbag from Thirty-One gifts (the Elite Skirt purse, black) and I am currently carrying that one. I like it. It is not designer quality, and it is a little slouchy, but I do like it and get loads of compliments on it. And now as I am writing this I am thinking I need another to take its place. My next one will be a Coach, for sure. I am eyeing the blue Madison, which is shown in the picture.

My favorite handbags are: Coach, Lancel (Premier Flirt, any color), some Tory Burch (but I don't like her logo), and Gucci (vintage only). I like handbags that have a lot of attachable accessories, like hang tags or scarves (I LOVE the grey Thirty-One scarf!!).

I have friends that love their shoes. I mean, I love shoes, too, but I don't feel the need to get a pair every other month. The same goes for jewelry, clothing, and other items.

I voted Other. Years ago, I had the shoe obsession, but after two kids, my feet grew and I couldn't wear any of my shoes anymore! Today, I think that type of obsession has been replaced by my coupon shopping.

No obsession for me. I could say my obsession is to make my wife happy and take pleasure in seeing that she can purchase anything her heart desires.
