Would you travel to another continent or pay $20,000 to get your hair done? Plenty of people do.
Would you travel to another continent or pay $20,000 to get your hair done? Plenty of people do.

Certified by Guinness World Records

Where else do you go to find out the most anything? This entry is in the adjudication section, so I can only assume that the title was disputed and Stuart Phillips still held victorious.

Ambitious from the Beginning

Stuart Phillips began his climb to hairdressing fame at an early age. He was only 16 years old when he began training at the famous Vidal Sassoon studio. Phillips completed his training three years later and headed from his home in London to Sydney, Australia to work in top salons as an International Stylist. He was considered so good, that his styles were televised on MTV and shown at local events.

While it would seem that Phillips was born with an innate talent for hair, it wasn't until he left Sydney and worked for three years in Asia that he realized the importance of decadent customer service. The customer care and technology that he saw while travelling Japan and Indonesia really affected him. He set himself a goal of one day opening his own salon, incorporating the ideas he had seen while abroad into his vision.

Phillips returned home to London after his working tour of Asia and began styling hair in the very upscale Covent Garden district. It was here that he met Tabitha who soon became his wife. Tabitha had a background in taking care of airline VIP's, interior design and the acquired knowledge that comes from extensive travel. Together, the Phillips' had the perfect combination for a highly successful business.

World's Most Expensive Hair Salon is Born

There is no shortage of hair salons in the U.K., nor was there in 1994 when the couple began to manifest Stuart Phillips' long held dream. The Phillips' were well aware of how much competition they were facing. They knew they had to have something special and unique that set them apart from the pack and make them outshine the others.

Here are the 3 main objectives they held for their new business, directly from the Stuart Phillips Award Winning Hair Salon site:

  1. To create the most relaxing atmosphere possible
  2. To have highly experienced and talented stylists and colourists
  3. To provide the best possible service in London

The results of making these objectives the mainstay of their enterprise surpassed their own expectations. Business was good and so was the salon's image. The next step was to work on the image of the star stylist, Phillips himself.

Stuart Phillips as a Competitive Bodybuilder

From Casual to Challenging

It's a fact that bodybuilders have trouble buying clothes off the rack. Normally, they stick with baggy tees, jeans, jogging pants and the like. Fitted clothing is a specialty item in most cases. That's why Stuart Phillips was always in casual attire - he was a competitive bodybuilder.

Tabitha, as many good wives do, managed to talk her husband into switching his wardrobe to something more upscale and befitting the image that they were portraying with the salon's appearance. Quickly developing his own style, Phillips became known for his seemingly unending supply of shirts. The clientelle noticed and said something, which gave the clever Phillips an idea. He put forth the challenge that if any customer could catch him wearing the same shirt twice, they would get a free haircut. It was a brilliant plan. Word spread like wildfire, with fashion magazines and newspapers all wanting the story along with pictures of his wardrobe.

Not Just a Stylist

Stuart Phillips' talent and standards have given him a reputation in the media, too. He works on movie sets and international commercial shoots, as well as doing radio guest spots and appearing on television.

The Stuart Phillips Award Winning Salon still holds to the original commitment to customer care that they began with. Every staff member, regardless of their title, go to great lengths to pamper the clients.

World's Most Expensive Services

World's Most Expensive Hairdresser - Local Prices

Naturally, Stuart Phillips' price list is in his local U.K. currency. I'm not sure about the conversion rate at the moment but I believe that the prices translate to HIGH. If you'd like to check it out, just click on this Stuart Phillips Award Winning Salon link.

World's Most Expensive Hairdresser - International Rates

But wait! Those prices may be higher than most of us are used to paying but they're still a far cry from the $20,000 mentioned above. If you want to pay the really big dollars, you just need the International VIP Service. Now, we're talking.

If you want a decadent adventure instead of just a haircut, then one of the three VIP packages may be just perfect for you. The day of your appointment, you will be Stuart Phillips' only client.

I'll give you a brief rundown of the three choices, starting with the bargain basement option.

The Gold Package - £8,000

If you're counting your pennies, then The Gold Package is for you. The least expensive of the international services, it still comes packed with some great treats:

  • limo ride from the airport to the salon
  • champagne lunch upon arrival at the salon
  • hair consultation
  • head and scalp massage
  • cut and blow dry from Stuart Phillips himself
  • instruction to maintain your styling and suggestions for different ways to wear it
  • a selection of L'Oreal products to take home
  • limo ride back to the airport after your appointment

The Diamond Package - £20,000

Okay, you've been saving those pennies for awhile now and can afford the next level. This is a two day/night package and includes a personal driver, assistant, personal shopper (if you want).

  • chauffeur driven limo from your home to the airport
  • first class flight to the UK
  • limo will pick you up at the airport and take you to one of Britain's finest hotels
  • champagne lunch
  • Stuart Phillips will escort you to the salon
  • extensive hair consultation
  • head and scalp massage
  • haircut
  • instructions to maintain style and suggestions for different ways of wearing it
  • selection of L'Oreal products
  • limo ride back to the hotel
  • day two to spend as you wish
  • limo ride back to the airport on the final day
  • limo ride from airport to your home
  • a portion of the proceeds go to 2 different charities

Second day blow-dry, translator, personal chef and personal security are optional and may be extra. I'm sure the security would be, not so sure about the others. I did read in one place that they were, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. I'm certain the helpful staff could confirm the true answer for you.

The Platinum Package - £Wow! Anything you want! Contact the Stuart Phillips Award Winning Salon to get a quote.

Now, if you don't like flying, don't worry because Phillips will come to you. Again, contact the salon for further information. You'll find the email by clicking the International VIP Service link.

World's Most Expensive Hair Experience

Odds are that I will never make it to the famous Stuart Phillips Hair Salon to give one of these packages a try so that I can report back on my personal experience. If you read the details of the available packages, you quickly realize that these are not just hair cut appointments, they are mini-vacations and luxurious ones at that.

And this folks, is how some people live. Are you one of them?

So the cost of his "fees" include non-hairdressing services! Anyway...so what are you waiting for Shirley?! It's Christmas!

Shirley, I dont think I could afford that in my lifetime. But its a nice thought

Shirley Anderson profile image

Hi Cris - yes, apparently. I imagine that's why it went through adjudication with Guiness. Must be profitable, he has genuine crystal chandaliers all over the place. I must be in the wrong business.

Re the Christmas present to myself....I hate appointments, I don't have the patience. I want a fantastic cut and streaking in the fastest time possible, don't even bother blow drying it.

Hey, thx for dropping by!

how does a fundraising sound to you? a dollar from the heart won't hurt! :D

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson 8 years ago from Ontario, Canada Author

Hi Cris.  I'd talk to Dottie first, but she can't hear me.

A fundraiser sounds great.  Yes, a dollar from the heart wouldn't hurt, perhaps $10 (or $10,000) would merely bruise it.  At a buck a pop, by the time we get enough the prices will have gone up.

Hey, maybe we could run a raffle or sell shares in our hubs or something.

We may have to use the money to get Dottie some treatment or therapy...I'm starting to get worried about her.

This was a fun hub to read as I really had no idea there were salons with these perks. My most expensive hair adventure was at a Vidal Sasson salon, and the stylist did a great job, its amazing how hair can change one's look, but that was a treat, and a long time ago.

Hibiscus Mel - thank-you!

Beats Me - I suggested last night that maybe Stuart Phillips could give a massive discount to Hubbers since there's so many of us. Maybe he'll read this and offer. :) Thank-you for your kind words.

Broteem - a little steeply priced, huh? Thank-you so much for your kindness!

Lgali - I'll be sure to pass your number on to Mr. Phillips. I'm sure he'll be calling you soon! :)

Writer Rider 8 years ago

Looks like a Richard (those ads for the most expensive items given anecdotally by a fictious character called Richard). Would I pay for the most expensive haircut? From that one picture you show of his work, no. The limosine seems a tad frivolous but I can imagine how it might be good for someone of stature who might get mobbed. But, still, there's his styling...

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson 8 years ago from Ontario, Canada Author

Hi Writer Rider - I don't know who Richard is but tell him to stop copying me. :)

Yeah, the style...I didn't want to say anything bad or sway anybody. Figured I'd post the pic and let people make their own decision. I think the service and pampering is what you pay for.

Thanks for saying it.

I just couldn't do it. Just couldn't do it. $20k? If maybe I'd never need another haircut again and it stayed styled perfecting, then it would be worth it. But I couldn't do it. Just couldn't :):)

Shirley Anderson profile image

I'm laughing, RGraf. Say what you really mean. :) So, if Stuart Phillips holds a contest and you win, you'll accept the prize? But otherwise it's a big fat no.

I'm in the giving mood... so how is this, I will take everyone over to the salon for the works with my winnings. I was notified yesterday that I'm the beneficiary for 1.65 million English pounds... sadly my long lost cousin or uncle or auntie has passed away ( honest I didn't even know he/she was sick) well bless their heart anyway for he/she left me his/her fortune. Since the money is in pounds already I won't loose any in the exchange. That should be a savings so I think we could all pile into my new jet and sprint over. ( I have to be back on Thursday though)

I'll need everyone to notify me "THE New Earl Of ????" (Or am I an Earllesss) wher you want to be picked up at...don't forget to car pool whenever possible...We're a green generation.

Super hub Shirley, Seasons greetings Zsuzsy

~Rockinjoe - with all the money you're making from your hubs? C'mon, what's $50,000 or so for a haircut and blow dry?

~Zsuzsy - Congrats! This is at least twice for you now, isn't it? You know, it's funny but I've lost several relatives in the UK and in Africa this year. Poor souls, I didn't even know that I had relatives in those countries. Do I have to bow before I talk to you now? What's the proper protocol for an Earl-ess? I think it is very generous of you to treat us all to Stuart Phillips hairdo's! Thanks a lot, Zsuzsy!

~RGraf - you're in luck! Zsuzsy Bee is going to treat us all! Can't wait to see you in your new 'do.

Hey! It's no wonder business has been dropping off, at my salon! You've been advertising for the competition! And I thought we were friends. And my prices are nearly 20% lower than his, too.

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson 7 years ago from Ontario, Canada Author

RGraff, you seem much more enthusiastic, now. You realize there's some danger here? Yeah, you get the first one free thanks to Zsuzsy, but then you like it, you really, really like it and in 6 weeks time you want to go back - no! need to go back....what'dya do?

B.T. Sorry about that, I didn't realize that you were still in business, I thought those hairstyles had killed all your clients. 20% cheaper? What a deal! Why aren't you advertising? Hey, for $50, I'll give you ad space for a week.

I'm not sure how old your are, BT, but I can totally see you with a full-body afro. Did you get a perm back in the day?

Hah! RGraf.....you've changed your tune, now you're open to the idea. :) I understand perfectly about having to supply Santa with the gift certificate to give to you. Won't Santa be surprised when his credit card bill comes in?

I saw that pic, BT. I almost passed right by RMR in the forums because I didn't recognize the avatar. Ah, but who among us embraces change. It's only been 25 years, give him a chance.

RGraff, now you've got it! You just needed to get your creative juices flowing! You MUST come back and tell us about the experience, okay? Promise.

I have a question - and I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, honest - how come hairstylists, and this includes women, always seem to have the funkiest looking hair?

Are they simply so jaded by all hairstyles in general that they purposely do the weirdest things with their own... just to see something different?

Shirley Anderson profile image

Shirley Anderson 7 years ago from Ontario, Canada Author

I honestly don't know, CW. One can only assume that they think it makes them look hip and funky or makes them stand out.

You can have the same look, ya know, without the big price tag. Just don't comb your hair in the morning. Look at all the money I just saved you. You're welcome.

Yeah, Christoph, $50,000 dollars (maybe more) for a haircut. Of course, that gets you lots of lavish goodies along with it. I don't begrudge him his success at all, either. Hell, if I could figure out a way to get somebody to pay me that much to write an article, you can bet I'd do it. He's a shining example of what's possible.

Thanks for reading and commenting! Hope everyone had a beautiful Christmas.

They can't make fun of hair dressers now can't they. It is good for him, it is an art he does it well. I can't afford it though :)

Very interesting hub Shirley. I noticed that over the past year even with a non-expensive hair stylist that it is not cheap, but maybe that is just my cheapo gleapo way of thinking lol.

Well, Cgull, we can but he's having the last laugh - all the way to the bank. I think that being able to command that much money for his service is a talent in itself, it's brilliant marketing. Maybe we could have a telethon - raise money for Stuart's kids (us). Get us the hair help we need/want. Or run a raffle. Hmm, we'll have to have a fundraiser brainstorming session. Thanks for commenting, Cgull.

Thank-you, SweetiePie. To have your hair trimmed and streaked here is $100 + tip. I think that's expensive enough, but the cheaper stylists do horrible things to my naturally curly, frizzy hair. Most of my friends and relatives pay the same amount. Well, the women. The men can still get dirt cheap haircuts and be out of the stylist's chair in 20 minutes. My hair appointments take 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Guess that's part of the reason it costs so much more.

Where did you go honey? Come on you can tell us. We're all friends here.

You have a new hair style. Come on, Shirley....was it Stuey? You found out he's single, then you're gone like a bat out of hell! And please don't tell me it's a lampshade. If it is, I want one.

Yes, that's it! I've been at Stuey's salon, batting my eyelashes and getting my hair done - you've found me out, Dottie! I may have to leave from time to time so that I can fly to London and see him. I'll stop by and see CS while I'm there, give him your regards. Soooo, how come you weren't after Stuey? I thought sure you'd trip over me on the way to the airport, but I didn't even see you.

Actually, that's an old 'do. That pic was taken during my last trip to Arizona in April. My old 'do's look like my new do's because of the kind of hair I have.

Lampshade, that's so funny! I guess that kind of lampshade is a wig?

I was thinking the same Shirley, why didn't we cross paths on the way to London? Hmmmm, well I did make a stop at my braid hub to link you and Stu up! Thought he may like that and give us a discount.

I'm on my way to London now to see CS about some editing, wanna come? Call Stu, maybe he can pick us up at the airport in his limo!

I must've been on an earlier flight - lucky me!! I'm going to have to peek in at your braid site, I haven't been there for quite a while.

I'd love to come along to CS's place. We'll make a party of it, cheer him up. I've got a call in to Stu, told him to send the limo and to make sure his schedule's clear so he can do our hair.

"The customer care and technology that he saw while travelling Japan and Indonesia really effected him."

I don't wish to be picky, but...oh, okay, I do. To 'affect' is a verb, clearly, and the 'effect' is the aftermath of whatever it was that 'affected' it.

Thanks, Holly. You are absolutely right! I normally do well with that one but in this case, I messed up. It's been changed.

Thanks for catching it.
