Am I suppose to tip the tattoo artist?

So I have gotten plenty before, but they were always from someone I knew very well who is no longer in business. Next week my husband and I will be both getting a $40 tattoo each at a local shop. Am I suppose to tip? If so how much? The tattoo's will take up about one hour of his time.

It doesn't hurt. In getting my first tattoo, there was a sign on the wall that had a good joke about tipping the artist. However, I forgot what the joke was. It was funny and distracted me for a few seconds.

If the tattoo artist does not own the shop, but is an employee, it would be really nice of you to tip him.  He provides a service, much like a waiter, hairdresser or manicurist....and it's appropriate to tip those who perform a service.   The basic percentage of tips is usually 15%...at least it is in my neck of the woods.....but wht you tip is entirely one's own decision......
You can tip the owner of the salon,as well, but it's not always necessary......except in a case where you are extremely pleased and want to say a big thank you!

WOW, I have never known of anyone to do so. Then again, the majority of my tattoo's have been done by two individuals, one on the inside, and the other on the outside (hope you understand that reference). However, to answer your question, you are getting $40 pieces, are they flash or are they specific designs you want done? Also, return business, or word of mouth usually is the "tip" unless of course you are getting "sleeves" or "back-pieces"...in which case you can tie in your gratuity in the package deal.

You'l know yourself if you feel he/she deserves a tip when the tattoo is finished.

Don't know who does your work, but everything is tied in when the hands are shooken. Besides, how do you tip on $1,000 worth of work, that is why I only have one artist.

Yes! Unless the artist is truly awful, you should always tip. I usually tip $5 for every half hour to forty-five minutes they spend on my tattoo.
